Juno or Marianne

We're expecting our second girl in November and these two names are my current favourites - just wanted to know what people thought.

If you absolutely hate either of them, can you say why?

I'd better hope she isn't hefty then!

Just because a name has classical origins, doesn't mena it can't also be trendy/of its era.

Phoebe, for example... a name from Greek mythology but only really seemed to become popular once the Friends series was televised.

Juno is okay, but I agree that it sounds like a nickname for someone called June. It also makes me think of a somewhat hefty woman.

Marianne is nicer and prettier, IMO. However, it also makes me think of the hefty, topless French woman waving the flag of the Republic.

I know two baby Junos (se London). Wouldn't imagine it will ever be wildly popular though.

MrsHelsBels74 · 13/07/2012 10:33

My stepmum had a dog called Juno so I can't help but connect it with dogs sorry.

juneau · 13/07/2012 10:32

I remember 'When Marnie was There'. I loved it too! I also loved 'Charley'.

FruitSaladIsNotPudding · 13/07/2012 09:52

I wouldn't use Marnie as a given name, although I like it as a nn. Interesting you say Marianne is frilly - I hate frilly names!

God, it's hard work isn't it. I still love Juno, but it seems it's a bit of a marmite name. Actually, I've had similar reactions to Tessa!

PS I love love love Marnie atm. Sadly I think that means it may be in for a revival .

Subarashii · 13/07/2012 09:01

I really like Juno.

Not quite so keen on Marianne as its a bit frilly for me but I AM obsessed with similar M names (had a thread just recently). I'm considering:

Marian
Merryn
Marnie
Marina
Marin

klaritaf · 13/07/2012 08:52

Juno sounds like a big fat woman (sorry) - wasn't she a character in Swiss Family Robinson? What about 'Junoesque'- where does that come from?
Marianne sounds weak.
Marnie is a lovely name though.

GnocchiNineDoors · 13/07/2012 08:48

Oooh Maggie is a great name in its own right.

Love Tessa and love Juno. Not fussed about Marianne.

FruitSaladIsNotPudding · 13/07/2012 08:46

I love Maggie as a shortening for Marianne, although it is a little bit of a stretch.

I am aware Juno is a Roman goddess, but I still think the name has the potential to be a bit trendy. Perhaps I am overthinking it!

No now Marina..That's the name of my IUD! Blush

HoldMeCloserTonyDanza · 12/07/2012 21:48

I LOVE Juno and it is top of my list for a future DD2. I'm from Dublin and also appreciate the connection to the play Juno and the Paycock.

My only reservation is that I have it in my head that it ought only to be given to a girl actually born in June. But I think I'm being stupid about that and should get over it.

Viviennemary · 12/07/2012 21:01

Not keen on Juno. Is it one of these faddy type names. Marianne is very pretty. Really like it.

jaffacakehips · 12/07/2012 20:27

Please don't pick Juno it's a horrid name that I don't want to get popular as I love it Grin

Not so keen on Marianna what about Marina?

VolAuVent · 12/07/2012 19:38

Much prefer Marianne to Juno, which sound like a nickname for June.

onetwo3 · 12/07/2012 18:48

Juno - unfortunately the film ruined it for me, I really disliked the main character.

Marianne - I much prefer MariannA, I think it's beautiful and a little more unique written with an 'a', certainly a name that will never date.

LurkingAndLearningForNow · 12/07/2012 18:37

Marianne!!!!

Just please not Juno..I just associate it with the teen pregnancy film.

Aboutlastnight · 12/07/2012 18:31

Oh my God you can buy it

Aboutlastnight · 12/07/2012 18:30

Oh, oh , oh

Cornish -I read 'When Marnie Was There' at primary school and never forgot it. I've never met anyone else who remembers it Smile

I rather like Marianne.

juneau · 12/07/2012 18:27

Juno, of course!

Marianne is my MIL ...

chipmunksex · 12/07/2012 18:25

I love Marianne. Miriam is lovely too and Miri for a nickname.

Juno is a bit try hard imo.

Hopefullyrecovering · 12/07/2012 18:14

Sorry Cornish, I was confusing you with Fruit :)

SilkStalkings · 12/07/2012 18:12

Also Marianne Faithfull is still rocking in her 70s - she led Mick Jagger astray don't you know?
Marion would be bleurgh, Marianne is like a pretty French combo of Marie and Anne.

SilkStalkings · 12/07/2012 18:10

Love Marianne, classy because of Sense and Sensibility. How about Maggie for short?
