I'd appreciate it if someone could enlighten me,and perhaps provide a few examples,as I keep seeing it mentioned on this board.

Am almost sure that someone once wanted to call their daughter Pie (Confused) and wanted to know what it could be a nickname for.

Or did I dream this?

Shouldacouldawoulda · 12/07/2012 14:26

I wanted to call DD Cordelia but only because DH had already vetoed Buffy.

Kelly could be spelt Kelleigh to really upset the MN name judges.

Soooo true SteamingNit!

Had never heard of this before MN. Often the nicknames will be in no way connected to the birth cert name making one wonder what the point is.

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 12/07/2012 14:12

It seems very Mumsnet to decide the nickname or diminutive first and then find the name - or else to choose quite a contrived odd dimunitive. I've seen this a lot - 'what do you think of Joanna, nn Wannie?' 'DD will be Georgina, nn Orgy' etc. 'What name can I use if I want the nn Boo?'

Emmeric · 12/07/2012 14:09

Tanyaah, I bet you never thought the whole K thing would end up like this!! You meant no offence I'm sure, and I wish everyone would just get over it!! I'm sick of reading about K. It keeps coming up all over the place!
O. K. ?!

HugeFurryWishingStool · 12/07/2012 12:58

Romily
Jago

PurplePidjin · 12/07/2012 12:42

Hully, surely you mean Towcester, which merely makes your ds fashionably named after a place Wink

squoosh · 12/07/2012 12:32

I think the K thing is in part beacuse a lot of Irish names that begin with C are anglicised to be spelt with a K.

Ciara become Keira
Ciarán becomes Keiran
Cian become Kian
Cillian become Killian

etc. They look better with the C.

To me the Mumsnet name du jour is definitely FLORENCE!

zozzle · 12/07/2012 12:25

Ok, I was being slightly cheeky, but let's not take it too seriously!!

I just think some people are attracted to names that they think will enhance/cement their social standing.

PurplePidjin · 12/07/2012 10:43

My name is belovèd of MN, even though I hate it and have never known one use the full name for everyday life

I was nicknamed Penis at school (same first 3 letters) Hmm

ShangriLaLaLa · 12/07/2012 10:31

And can we stop calling names 'chavvy'? It's offensive.

okWithK · 12/07/2012 10:22

Oh right, Badgerina, so you think it's OK to be rude to people you perceive as middle class, because you reckon they need taking down a peg or two? Hmm Thing is, I don't think it'll make the chip on your shoulder any lighter.

Oh, and your logic sucks.

  • ShowOfHands was saying that group A (people who don't like the letter K) being nasty to group B (people who make up names) doesn't make it ok for group B to be nasty to group A.
  • Your feminism straw man statement says that if some of group A (women) are oppressing some of group B (men), then group A should allow group B to oppress them too. i.e. the exact opposite of what ShowOfHands said.
Badgerina · 11/07/2012 13:39

ShowofHands that's because those of lower socioeconomic status are the under dog, and are often disadvantaged. The middle classes and higher enjoy privileges.

Your argument is a bit like saying Feminism is obsolete because some men are oppressed too.

Hullygully · 11/07/2012 09:08

I agree. Who cares?

What's in a name?

A rose by any other name...

My ds is called Toaster

ShowOfHands · 11/07/2012 09:07

"It has to be pukey, public school, classic and under-used.

[vomits into keyboard, then yawns at the predictability"

It's interesting that people abhor and refute comments about the socioeconomic background conjured by some k names by being equally rude about the socioeconomic background conjured by other names.

Wouldn't it be nice if we all just used the names we liked. Unless you choose Toaster and then you need to be stopped for the good of society and your offspring.

Badgerina · 11/07/2012 06:58

It has to indicate the pure-blood, middle class roots of the parents; and confer instant entry into any Russell Group university, and later the medical or law profession.

Janoschi · 10/07/2012 22:22

This K bollocks is a bit daft, IMHO.

In Germany, most C names are spelled with a K. Konrad, Karl, Katherina, Kordelia even! It ain't chavvy.

bananaramma · 10/07/2012 22:22

Sebastian, Hugo, Quentin, Casper, Dominic, Edward, Cassius,

Florence, Clementine, Constance, Cordelia, Beatrice, Elizabeth,

all seem to be 'popular' on mumsnet these days.

YodasMummy · 10/07/2012 22:05

Ottilie is a MN name.

Ample · 10/07/2012 21:22

UnSocialite Grin
VolAuVent Yes I do believe KK would be up for that!

VolAuVent · 10/07/2012 21:18

All it takes is for someone to spell it Kordelia...

UnSocialite · 10/07/2012 21:03

I have often thought that, Ample! Either that or for it to emerge that little Kai Rooney has the middle name Ptolomey :o

Ample · 10/07/2012 21:02

All we need is someone say, Coleen Rooney or Kerry Katona to use the name Cordelia and it will be snubbed for eternity. Well maybe eternity is stretching it.

Ample · 10/07/2012 20:51

I didn't like mine until was out of uni Grin

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 10/07/2012 20:50

I don't particularly think you have to avoid the whole top 100 you know.
