For a friends pfb. Middle name Anne.

What do you think? Which do you prefer?

Thanks.

See, I don't really get the difference between Lily-May and Lily May. The name is the same, why is it so awful with the hyphen but ok without?

I'm a Rebecca-Jane and nobody has ever made assumptions about my hyphen (that I know of!) I am also hardly ever known by both names and most people wouldn't know I had a hyphen. It's really not a big deal.

I quite like Lily-May and Lexi but not Jean, Leigh or Kizzi

How about:
Abbie-Jade
Amber-Rose
Anna-Kate
Ayla-Marie
Beth-Anne
Ciara-May
Cassia-Rose
Daisy-May
Ella-Grace
Erica-Jane
Farrah-Rose
Felicity-Ann
Georgia-May
Isla-May
India-Rose
Kyla-Grace
Lara-Kate
Layla-Marie
Lyla-Louise
Lexie-May
Lydia-Rose
Mia-Rose
Olivia-Jane
Poppy-Ann
Thea-Rose
Tilly-Jade

Hyphenated names are not my style, but it is your friend's child.

I really don't buy into the idea that names shape destinies. Your friend should name her child something she thinks is beautiful, that is all that matters.

She could use Anna which has the same meaning as Anne. Lily- Anna is quite sweet (and a bit more unusual than Lily May). And then something else for middle name.

Tia rose is nice, I think (although reminds me of tea roses!)

WantAnOrange · 09/07/2012 19:10

I know someone called Kizzy, but it's not her actual name for pete's sake, it's a silly nickname we use for her. She wouldn't put it on her CV...

I would have to find a tactful way of saying those names, um, lack class? I don't know how I would do this though. Prehaps mention that her DD may oneday need to use something a little more traditional. She needs a name that sounds good wether she's a rock star or a solicitor.

Kizzi is usually short for Kristina for example.

Born2BRiiiled · 09/07/2012 18:32

What about Kezia-Jane? I like Kezia. I think of it as being quite hippyish and folky. I also love Marie-Louise.

BorisJohnsonsHair · 09/07/2012 18:27

Sally-Anne
Sarah-Louise
Mary-Jane
Amber-May

Snog · 09/07/2012 18:16

To be fair, judging from this thread almost nobody on mumsnet likes any of the name choices proposed - I think the most recent suggestions are even worse that the earlier suggestions.

Rarely have I seen such a huge raft of unfavourable opinions tbh. However, perhaps your friend is ahead of the curve here?

Minty82 · 09/07/2012 18:02

There are plenty of traditional hyphenated names; they've not always had such negative connotations (though admittedly Mary or Anne are usually obligatory components, which won't work if she wants Anne as a middle name).

Mary-Rose
Anne-Marie
Mary-Anne
Mary-Kate
Sally-Anne
Sarah-Jane
Marie-Louise
Anna-Sophia

AmazingBouncingFerret · 09/07/2012 13:50

Lexi-Jean sounds to much like a pair of jeans for the larger arsed.

Lexi-Jeans with extra lycra for your comfort...

EldritchCleavage · 09/07/2012 13:43

I was tormented at school by being called 'Kizzie-from-Roots'. With any luck that connotation has been forgotten now, though!

Mary-Jane
Annie-May
Anna-Rose
Dorothy-Anne
Milly-Molly-Mandy...

I'll get my coat.

Bunbaker · 09/07/2012 13:35

There was one child in DD's class at primary school with a hyphenated name. No-one ever used the second part of the name

Pixieonthemoor · 09/07/2012 13:31

The first bits of these names are ok but why, in the name of all thats holy, would you hyphenate like this?? Just ghastly. Ask her when her daughter is hoping to move into her first trailer.....

JazzAnnNonMouse · 09/07/2012 11:26

I quite like lexi jean Smile

shrinkingnora · 09/07/2012 11:16

She really was named after the drink. Remi-Martin is definitely a boys name. My children are called Thunderbird and Special-Brew.

mrstowers · 09/07/2012 10:59

Sorry, I'll be serious then. How about Remi-Martin or is that a boy's name? Grin

shrinkingnora · 09/07/2012 10:49

Don't joke, MrsTowers. I taight a child who's cousin was called Tia-Maria. DD had a friend called Lilli-Ella....

mrstowers · 09/07/2012 10:39

Oh dear god please not Lily-May. I am going to go insane if I hear of another Lily-May! How about Tia-Maria? Wink

MulberryMoon · 09/07/2012 10:02

What about Daisy May?

AnnaNimitty · 09/07/2012 09:40

Hate the name Lexi. Hyphenated names are anathema on MN!

birdofthenorth · 09/07/2012 08:20

I'm very sorry to hear about Sylvie-Rose. That's a really beautiful name.

OP I think the following are fine-

Tia-Rose
Lily-Rose (if a bit flowery)
Lily-May or Mae (Mai should be pronounced My like Thai IMHO)
Lily-Jean (LOVE Jean!)
Or any of the above with Lilia. Would she considers Lilian/ Lily-Anne instead of having Anne as the mn?

Fwiw I think my judgypants would be most likely to come on with Lexi-Whatever or Kezia/Kizzy-Whatever, although both of those are influence by real people I know -our school bully Alexia/Lexi and a professional associate (senior in a FTSE company so doing well for herself) called Kezia, who ate people for breakfast, especially other aspirant women.

We all have different tastes. I'm sure my DD's old lady name is far from to everyone's tastes.

Janoschi · 09/07/2012 01:56

If you look outside of the UK, loads of countries go for hyphenated names. France is an obvious one but also Germany. So many in the Sophia-Charlotta, Anna-Luise vein going on, and these are usually used by the upper-middle classes over there.

As I said, really not my taste but then again I'm not into 'classic' Katherine / Helena / Elizabeth type names either. So it's not a snobbery thing, it's a personal taste thing. I love wild, nature names. Lots don't. Heigh ho.

Sylvie-Rose is beautiful. Sorry for your loss. Sad

chipmonkey · 09/07/2012 00:07

I have a very high IQ.
My dd was Sylvie-Rose.
But she died so at least people are less likely to make assumptions about my IQ.

Janoschi · 08/07/2012 23:49

They aren't my taste at all but really, why should the OP persuade her friend to change a name style she loves into one preferred by Mumsnet? It's her baby and she'll be the one using the name 24-7. I've worked with all manner of crazy named people and really it's no biggy. The world is thankfully large enough to accommodate all tastes.

Missy-Mae anyone?

Thingiebob · 08/07/2012 23:41

Ah I meant why does the friend insist on using a hyphenated name.
Lilly-May is sweet.
Not keen on the others.

ZacharyQuack · 08/07/2012 23:38

OP, I hope your friend doesn't google her name choices and find this thread.

FellatioNelson · 08/07/2012 23:38

Kizzy was the gypsy child in the book the Diddacoi.
