What is you're opinion of the name Philippa? Love, hate, over used?

Thanks

Yeah a few people have tried to call me Phil in the past which didn't go down well but soon put in their place!
Forgot about forester!

pipsicles · 04/07/2012 22:22

No. Philippa means lover of horses in Greek, hence the occasional horsey connotations. I love my name and have loved that I rarely meet anyone with it. DH on the other hand has a really common name and I have been keen to try and name DCs with more unusual, but classic names, which is tricky. I would definitely recommend, although she may be called Phil occasionally, but that can be stopped easily with your preferred shortenings if you dislike it.

PercyFilth · 04/07/2012 13:32

sydenhamhiller why say it's bigoted to call it "horsey"? That's the meaning of the name: lover of horses! Confused

jannaref · 04/07/2012 12:05

Love it!

squoosh · 04/07/2012 11:36

Happenstance and Syden stop thinking! The worms are crawling out of those cans.

You be glaring and muttering at your husbands this evening and the poor sods will be clueless! Grin

Happenstance · 04/07/2012 11:36

Squoosh i remember finding out it meant BJ on Greek and ringing my mum to tell her, her response was
"really, i knew it meant something rude in Icelandic." Hmm

Happenstance · 04/07/2012 11:33

oh lol just remembered i wanted to call DD2 Genevieve and DH said it was a bit posh for us i was Confused but my names Philippa FGS

Pipjoy wow Philippa of Hainault, i was named after Philippa Forrester :(

Happenstance · 04/07/2012 11:29

Yes PercyFilth it does, can't say it's had a massive impact on my life though Grin, i don't mind it now, hated it at school, Philippa sounds like your being told off Sad, i am Pips to friends and family, Pippa to everyone else, god help anyone who calls me Phil Angry.

sydenhamhiller · 04/07/2012 11:22

LOVE it - wanted it for DC3, shortened to Pippa, but DH thinks too horsey... (bigot!). Am childminder, and work a lot at my kids' school - only Pippa I know in person is 40. I'd go for it (sadly think our name-to-be is increasing in popularity, but we've liked it for years...)

squoosh · 04/07/2012 10:41

Pippa means rude words in lots of languages not just Greek.

PipJoy · 04/07/2012 08:37

Now you mention it I remember some foul Greek man telling me that years ago in a bar, didn't bother me though, found it quite amusing at the time and forgot all about it. I don't even think about the Middleton connection, different era though, I always thought of pippa from home and away.... sod the Middleton one, she's a flash in the pan. My mum actually took inspiration from chaucer's wife and Philippa of hainault, queen of Edward III, she was reading a lot of historical fiction at the time but nicer association as she is a proper royal....

PoppyWearer · 03/07/2012 20:15

Correct, Percy.

PercyFilth · 03/07/2012 20:12

Doesn't Pippa mean blow-job in Greek, or something? Sure I've read that somewhere.

octaviarose · 03/07/2012 19:43

I love it and if it weren't for people saying oh after the Middleton girl, I would use it. Grrr to her!

minipie · 03/07/2012 19:38

Really like Pippa and Pip but really dislike Philippa...

shockers · 03/07/2012 17:49

It's my name and I love it... always have Smile.

Yorky · 03/07/2012 17:31

DD2 is 10wks old and I have had nothing but positive comments on her name, despite my being worried about people associating it with the Middletons (especially as her middle name is that of my favourite aunt, and totally not to do with THAT Pippa's sister! Blush)

outtolunchagain · 03/07/2012 17:14

It's my name and I strongly agree with everything Pipjoy says,I love it now but did find it a bit of a pain as a small child because of the Ph

Not over-used yet at all but pressumeably going to rocket due to Pippa Middleton. Nice name though.

squoosh · 03/07/2012 12:09

Strongly dislike.

ceeveebee · 03/07/2012 09:39

I like it. I know a 5 month old named Phillippa.

lilbreeze · 03/07/2012 09:23

Popular in my area, always shortened to Pippa.

VolAuVent · 03/07/2012 09:08

Lovely name.

bobs · 03/07/2012 09:06

DD1, now 18 is a Philippa - called Pippa by all and i also call her Phil. She's never said she doesn't like it and she's the only one in her year with the name. I personally wouldn't change it if i had the choice again
