DS1 (aged 7) has a couple of suggestions

AhsokaTano · 24/06/2012 09:00

I've posted in the past for ideas and thoughts but have a few more from DS which I love but am not sure I'm brave enough to use!

Background: we have a big scottishy double barrelled surname, and we have Alec and Hugh already. We don't know what this baby is so are looking at boy or girl options.

Anyway, are
Artemis Double-Barrell
Athena Double-Barrell

too silly?

Boys names in the mix are Angus, Magnus, Sholto, with the family middle name of Carter.

Can I vote for Sholto?! I know a little Sholto and he's lovely. I think it's a nice strong, classy and classic name.

AhsokaTano · 27/06/2012 10:31

We all like Ophelia but I'm a bit put off by the tragic connotations, I could probably get past that though. I also like Xanthe which is nice and short with the epic surname.

Hector or Gregor are also on the list and Magnus is off - thanks for the Magnus Carter heads up. Smile

Ophelia
Dahlia

Lennard
Jared
Teodor

BuntyPenfold · 24/06/2012 22:18

I like all your names and suggestions, except Angus.
Anyone not keen on an Angus can very easily just leave out the G....

amck5700 · 24/06/2012 22:07

....or Ineeze?/Inese?

amck5700 · 24/06/2012 22:04

I like Oonagh - the other spelling might people pronounce it Yoo Na.

AhsokaTano · 24/06/2012 21:37

Struan, Blair or Torin for a boy

I have a Clio car (which i love) but there might be a lot of people who associate it with that.

what about Ailsa, Elspeth, Greer or Ainslie for a girl.

amck5700 · 24/06/2012 18:33

Lorna for a girl - very underused
Ivo for a boy

thegreylady · 24/06/2012 18:26

Clio is lovely-or Cassandra with Cassie as a sweet nn perhaps.

I really like Athena

jubilee10 · 24/06/2012 15:40

Catriona or Eilidh - you've got me going now.

jubilee10 · 24/06/2012 15:23

Alec, Hugh and Finlay or Alec, Hugh and Fiona (good Scottish name - not over used these days) or Heather.

AhsokaTano · 24/06/2012 15:14

Lots of great suggestions there thanks. I do really like Hector ( and it's on DS1s ancient Greek theme).

What about Clio, as in the Muse not Cleopatra?

Love Artemis and know a lovely 4 year old one.

Also really like Magnus, Angus, Quentin (we have one Smile), Fergus, or how about Benedict?

PoppadumPreach · 24/06/2012 14:07

"hector" as a name dies not mean to bully, it means "holding strong"

Lots of names have alternative "verb-meanings" ; jack (ahem), John, Harry etc!

Smile
tammy234 · 24/06/2012 13:56

Hector means 'to bully' or 'to torment' which I don't think is very nice, personally. Love Douglas though!

tammy234 · 24/06/2012 13:55

How can you say someone is posh based on their NAME alone?! I just don't get that. A person might be posh (if at all), but a name is just that, a name or identifier. In my experience a person just 'becomes' their name, not the other way round.

So, choose the names you love and let your child's personality and character determine who they are!

PoppadumPreach · 24/06/2012 13:54

Douglas or hector

tammy234 · 24/06/2012 13:52

I love Artemis for a girl and Angus or Magnus for a boy.

I also love Athena, Theodora, Antonia for girls.

And how about Dominic, Thaddeus, Quentin, Marcus for boys?

Stellan · 24/06/2012 13:41

How about Alec, Hugh and...
Fergus?
Alasdair?
Iain?
Hamish?
Dashiell?
Simon?
Martin?
Leo?
Felix?
Miles?
Nicholas?
Scott?
Peter?

I think Athena is lovely. Artemis is great too but it is suffers from being associated as a boys' name due to Artemis Fowl and I fear it would be a difficult name to wear. I'd be inclined towards something a little less unusual, personally, as your boys' names fall into the well-known but not over-used category. Athena is unusual too but sounds like lots of popular names with its 'a' ending.

You might also like Helena, Theodora, Thea, Leah?

DilysPrice · 24/06/2012 10:16

I think Athena and Artemis are both great for girls. You'd get a few raises eyebrows at first but there's absolutely nothing wrong with them.
Or what about Thalia?

ripsishere · 24/06/2012 09:59

Which is why Duncan is such a good choice.

AhsokaTano · 24/06/2012 09:28

Ah yes, I hadn't thought of the Magnus Carter thing.

DH family v posh, me v not posh and kids go to state primary hence the worry some of the names are a bit much Grin
