Dudley?

Hi all, newbie here so be gentle!

Me and my OH are at loggerheads over the name Dudley for our next baby (due in 6 weeks and a boy). I absolutely can't stand it, but they absolutely love it and have their heart set on it.

Our DD is called Elsie, which we are sooo happy with, so initially we wanted something a bit different for the new arrival. My view has changed since and I feel a boy's name doesn't have as much freedom to be quirky and 'out there' as a girls name, so I'm erring to more traditional, strong names (Luke is my fave)

Am I being unreasonable? What do you guys think of Dudley? I've tried to love it but I just can't at the moment. I need help on this one!

Btw, middle name will be Alistair after my brother

I can't think of it as pronounced any way other than Dod-laaay in a Wolverhampton accent by Lenny Henry! Please don't let him have his way on this.

I love the name Luke (although I'm biased as it's my DS's name- he's 15 Smile)

Cuddly. Not in a good way. Luke is nice though Smile

I actually quite like it - made me immediately think of Dudley Moore. However I have never read Harry potter so didn't know that connection and take the other posters' point on that one!

WithACherryOnTop · 13/06/2012 21:13

No,no and a thousand times no.It's hideous.Utterly hideous.

bodz29 · 13/06/2012 21:12

Lol, yes it is my DH and I honestly have no idea where it has come from. As I said, we named our DD Elsie (which was his idea and I loved) and I think he's trying to come up with something special again and failing IMHO

I might show him this thread - glad I'm not the only one who feels so strongly against it!

The most widely read children's books in the world and probably will be for a while and one of the nastiest characters is called Dudley! Why would anyone think that would be a good idea?

You have to find a name that you BOTH like

Andie20521 · 13/06/2012 21:10

Please please don't inflict that on your child. I never ever comment on these threads but horror has moved me to post!

Dudley will be off limits for some time due to Harry Potter...it conjures up images of a over weight, spolit brat/bully who is not too clever...please tell me you are a troll?

By the way love the name ABF

CakeBump · 13/06/2012 21:09

who are "they?" cos if its anyone other than your OH they should Butt The Fuck Out...

And fwiw Dudley is a dreadful name. Awful.

I used to ride a horse called Dudley with a willy so big it had to be seen to be believed...

LikeaPairOfNunsKnickers · 13/06/2012 21:09

My friends cat is called Dudley - mad as a box of frogs.

HTH

Nospringflower · 13/06/2012 21:08

No to Dudley! Really like Luke but very popular here.

lisaro · 13/06/2012 21:07

Dudley is pretty bad, but your others are great.

Oh my goodness, just NO. Luke is a lovely name. Dudley is quite frankly awful. Why are they so set on it?

HappyCamel · 13/06/2012 21:03

Luke is far better, you say "they have their heart set" is this just your DH or is someone else suggesting it? You could consider Declan or Donald if you want a similar compromise name.

omletta · 13/06/2012 21:01

No, no, no.

MirandaGoshawk · 13/06/2012 21:00

What Ferret said

AmazingBouncingFerret · 13/06/2012 20:59

As in Dudley Dursley the spoilt fat kid out of Harry Potter or the really rather depressing town in the West Midlands?

JoanOfNark · 13/06/2012 20:58

Dudley? Why would you do that to a poor innocent child? Why?
