Hi, I am currently in week 11 with my first babs, mothers intuition is telling me its a boy(obviously could be completely wrong!)

My favourite boys name is Oscar but I feel it is getting v popular in Ireland... Other names are

-Charles(Charlie)
-Harry
-Elliot
-Dexter(what is the lowdown on Dexter, is it too trendy & set to date badly)
-Setanta
-Mylo
-Blaise
-Rocco(like Dexter too trendy???)
-Fiachra(old Irish name)

Any help would be appreciated as its driving me insane at the moment! Also on a different note how many of you predicted the sex of your baby in first trimester & were correct? Only 11 weeks but instinct is saying boy!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
AThingInYourLife · 14/06/2012 17:46

I like Setanta (but it would be brave), Milo (but possibly a bit past-it), Fiachra

Love Fiachra. Please d

FormerlyTitledUntidy · 14/06/2012 17:04

Caoilte is lovely. :)

mathanxiety · 14/06/2012 16:57

Sorry, I misspelled it - Caoilte is the name, coillte is 'forest or woods' Blush

WeShouldOpenABar · 14/06/2012 16:50

math , Coillte as in the Irish word for forest? sorry but Setanta does remind me of the sports channel and i dont even watch sports, I'm D4 adjacent and Harry and Oscar are very common now. I hadnt heard many Senans but in the last year three , though one tried to change it a bit with Zenan
How about Naoise or Ruairi - cant do fadas

mathanxiety · 14/06/2012 16:41

Some unusual Irish boys' names:
Nessan /Neasán
Luan
Connla
Cairbre
Ruadhán
Coillte

FormerlyTitledUntidy · 14/06/2012 16:27

Ha! Portmarnock is pretty well off to be fair, you're hardly as far away from D4 as you can get!
Oscar is very popular where I am, as is Harry, and Charlie.

Irish names are lovely, Setanta is good, have you thought about Senan? I like Fiachra too, though prefer Fiach.

I think the others are too out there for me, sorry.

mathanxiety · 14/06/2012 16:25

Blaise is pronounced 'blaze'. An old martyr/saint's name -- he is the patron of throat afflictions and there is a traditional blessing of throats using crossed candles placed at the throat in many churches on St Blaise's day.

mathanxiety · 14/06/2012 16:20

I think Oscar is really nice and not faddy in Ireland. It's been around for a long time, as Squoosh says - I remember some characters from Irish children's books (maybe by Patricia Lynch?) with this name.

I love Ferdia too..

SuperSesame · 14/06/2012 16:19

Forgot to say, I followed my intuition and was right too! Although only felt it was a boy after the 12 week scan. Not sure why, nothing obvious in the scan but just looked like a boy!

SuperSesame · 14/06/2012 16:18

Irish here and haven't met any Irish Oscars. Not crazy about it myself though.
For your others:
Charles(Charlie) -- Becoming more popular, huge in the UK.If you don't mind that. Its a classic name.
-Harry -- As above, probably bigger here than Charlie but I think it will become more so I tend to believe names popular in the UK are popular in Ireland a couple of year later. Emily being an example of that. And every second girl baby is Eve/Eva/Evie lately.
-Elliot -- I like it. Reminds me of cute boy in ET.
-Dexter -- Don't like, sounds to surnamey and a bit American
-Setanta -- Love it. Strong boys name with Irish influence.
-Mylo -- Love this too. I have a thing for names not in the top 100 or so. It might feel like taking a risk but why not?
-Blaise -- Never heard it before, how is it pronounced?
-Rocco -- Don't like. Immediatley think of Madonna's son and one of Westlife's twin boys. Also tiles ( altohugh thats Rocca tiles)
-Fiachra -- Went to school with one, if you are a gaelgeoir then maybe but I don't think it would travel well and would burden him with trying to say it and spell it for people. (I have one of those names) Also reminds me of the toothpaste Fiachla, Irish for Teeth.

PamBeesly · 14/06/2012 16:09

I love Oscar OP, it was on my boys short list (I live in Galway) and haven't encountered many babies with your names bar Harry, I love Blaise too. I have a DS Rowan :) Congratulations!

wolvesdidit · 14/06/2012 16:00

Meant DSs sorry

wolvesdidit · 14/06/2012 16:00

One of my DSsis called Conan Ignatius. Two good Irish names there for you :)

wolvesdidit · 14/06/2012 15:57

Oh Setanta! The hound of Ulster?? Love it anyway!

Lannie33 · 14/06/2012 15:55

Charles(Charlie): like but common
-Harry: OK but commone
-Elliot: really like!
-Dexter(what is the lowdown on Dexter, is it too trendy & set to date badly): unsure (think of the serial killer on HBO series "Dexter"...might just be on in north america?
-Setanta: not a fan
-Mylo: really like! like Miles better but Mylo still good
-Blaise: OK
-Rocco(like Dexter too trendy???): like
-Fiachra(old Irish name): unsure

badtime · 14/06/2012 11:43

I find Setanta a bit much. Have you read what that boy got up to? Shocking!

SoupDragon · 14/06/2012 11:36

Beyond awful : Blaise, Sentanta, Rocco
OK: Charles, Harry Elliott Mylo (prefer Milo) Oscar
Like: Dexter but it probably is one of those "trendy" type names.

I have no real feeling for Fiachra as I am not Irish and have no idea how to pronounce it :)

squoosh · 14/06/2012 11:25

As a person of D4 origin Wink here are my thoughts

Oscar - I know a few Oscars in their thirties. This name has always had a following in Ireland whereas it's suddenly become popular in the UK. In fact there used to be a small cinema/theatre called the Oscar in dear old D4 and it reminds me of this.
Charles(Charlie) - ok
Harry - don't like at all.
Elliot - ok
Dexter - dislike, think it's a bit faddy
Setanta - love! and shame on any Irish person who is first reminded of a sports channel

Mylo - trendy, can't imagine their are loads of these in Dublin
Blaise - I know there's a St Blaise but it sounds like an X Men character to me
Rocco - strongly dislike and don't think it is D4 at all. One of Berie Ahern's Westlife grandkids is called Rocco.
Fiachra - good solid name

My favourite Irish boys name is Ferdia, has a Setanta connection too. Easy to spell won't and befuddle people when he goes abroad.

JoanOfNark · 14/06/2012 10:50

Portmarnock is fairly d4 too though, you're only a stones throw from Malahide after all!

FaneFeyre · 14/06/2012 09:59

Oscar is nice, if popular, so your dh is doing alright! I think fiachra is great but would def spell it as you have listed it, with the h.

Setanta is pretty cool- he would have to be a sporty dude! Dexter is hideous, please avoid.

I have a 20 week old and I knew knew knew she was a girl from the second I found out. Scan was inconclusive, midwives were taking bets on the last push, and all I could think was no need to bet, it's a girl!
I was right.

chipmonkey · 14/06/2012 01:26

I have a Harry, get lots of nice comments.
Love Oscar and don't know any round here, though my friend on the Southside has one!

I was wrong for ds1, thought he was a girl
Right for ds2
right for ds3
right for ds4
wrong for dd. After all the boys, I really didn't think I could have a girl.

Pandygirl · 14/06/2012 00:26

Connor, Aiden, Eoin?

mathanxiety · 14/06/2012 00:20

D4 is Chelsea/Belgravia/Sloane Square, basically. Vair Naice.

ThisAintKansas · 13/06/2012 22:37

Charlie, Harry and Oscar are everywhere in London, dunno about Dubs.

Mylo, Rocco and Blaise are what I would politely describe as 'aspirational' . Not good.

Dexter is OK, but not destined to be a great classic.

I love Fiachra. Fintan? Finbar?

Elliot is nice. Or Elias? Elijah?

My favourite Irish names are Oisin, Lorcan, Micheal, Cormac, Piaras & Cillian

Iarlaith, Finnian, Cairbre, Feidhlim, Aodhan, Dara also nice.

vinobaroness · 13/06/2012 21:33

Jarlaith is lovely Ack, adds to list:)
