Hi, I am currently in week 11 with my first babs, mothers intuition is telling me its a boy(obviously could be completely wrong!)

My favourite boys name is Oscar but I feel it is getting v popular in Ireland... Other names are

-Charles(Charlie)
-Harry
-Elliot
-Dexter(what is the lowdown on Dexter, is it too trendy & set to date badly)
-Setanta
-Mylo
-Blaise
-Rocco(like Dexter too trendy???)
-Fiachra(old Irish name)

Any help would be appreciated as its driving me insane at the moment! Also on a different note how many of you predicted the sex of your baby in first trimester & were correct? Only 11 weeks but instinct is saying boy!

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

not from d4 but SoCoDu, will that do!?

I know a few oscars. Usually have a brother called Felix. prefer felix!
Most of your names are quite normal and popular. I like charlie but there are a fair few of them aren't there. do you mind that?
I would spell Milo with an I. I only know one Milo. I don't know any Blaises! that sounds like my late granddad swearing.
Setanta!? well, I wouldn't have the nerve myself. But if you are a gardener or work in tv or you send your children to the gaelscoil, maybe you can pull it off! I couldn't I know that. Amanda Brunker has a Setanta.

Fiachra is ok, wouldn't pick it. Too close to 'fiacla' but then only Irish people would know that.

AndieMatrix · 26/08/2012 00:59

Fiachra is cool, as is Blaise. I know a Milo and he's ace (although he's actually a Michael but nobody has called him that ever as far as I know.lol)

apachepony · 24/08/2012 18:44

Son likely to move in mc dublin circles, hence the issue, don't want loads at his school!

apachepony · 24/08/2012 18:42

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but arrgggh! Just found out who Oscar was in Irish mythology, was already a name on my short list but has now shot right up to the top due to having meaning for both me and dh - but is it really so v popular? I didn't realise, I don't know any children called Oscar. I see it is still at 62 in Irish 2011 name list, which is higher than I would like but still not too high...I'm guessing though a lot of little oscars are in middle class Dublin? Grrr, dh really wants an Irish name, I'm not so sure, especially as fionn and Oisin were too of my favourites but are out (although linked to Oscar in legend!)

vinobaroness · 21/06/2012 23:31

Ha Nymia I presume he is a Corkonian so!! Finbarr is fab, such an old strong name & Finn is just fab. My hubby is still gunning from Oscar & I do like it alot too & it matches our last name well.
Devora I love Oisin too but the only thing is I don't think it travels well especially with the fadas which I havn't a clue how to do on the computer!!

OP posts:
Devora · 21/06/2012 23:15

Oisin. Very cool.

Nymia · 21/06/2012 23:09

I love, LOVE the name Setanta and my husband likes it too... we are Irish and we don't watch much TV though so for us it's no different than thinking of, say, the TV channel "Dave" - we can separate it fairly easily. But we have a 3-syllable last name and maybe a 6-syllable name is just too much of a mouthful for a wee lad.

I also love Finn, and we are thinking to call our soon-to-be-born baby boy Finbarr (family name on my husband's side, and also patron saint of his home town!) and maybe Finn for short.

vinobaroness · 21/06/2012 22:28

Ah bless Eamonn is super cute,so uncommon now for babies!! I grew up with lots of Eamonn's:)

SuperSesame · 20/06/2012 16:38

I met a baby Eamonn recently. I thought it was cute!

Lunarlyte · 20/06/2012 12:42

Annoyingly, DH 'Daddy's intuition' was bang on both times ...

Lunarlyte · 20/06/2012 12:40

My vote is for Mylo!!

We have 2 DDs and I was right about DD1 but was convinced DD2 would be a boy until I was 18 weeks pg.

freerangeeggs · 19/06/2012 21:13

Does Fiachra make anyone else think of Viagra??

vinobaroness · 18/06/2012 23:55

Thanks soontobe, the top 100 CSO list should be out at the end of the month I think for 2011?

OP posts:
soontobemumofthree · 18/06/2012 23:49

Just looked at it again and list is from 2009!

soontobemumofthree · 18/06/2012 23:43

According to the mumsnet list of Irish baby name popularity Oscar is number 65 which doesnt sound too common to me but could be on the increase.

I don't know any Oscars and think it is a great name.

Setanta makes me think of the hurler and the TV channel. But I really like this name though too.

FormerlyTitledUntidy · 18/06/2012 22:38

Oscar is definitely very popular around me (D.9) I know at least 4, and 3 Cians. Countless Harry/ Charlie/ Jack s too.
You have lots of time though, and there is nothing wrong with having a popular name. I have a much maligned name on here for being popular in the 70s but I never met another until I went to college.

vinobaroness · 18/06/2012 22:13

Hi thanks for all the replies, I haven't logged on for a couple of days. We had our 12 weeks (abdominal) scan & my placenta is right side lateral which according to the old wives tales is another strong boy sign lol!! We will be thrilled with blue or pink I just love the guessing:) Haven't started really thinking about girls names yet but I think that will be alot more fun!

Dexter, Rocco, Blaise & Mylo were never really serious contenders I just threw them in for opinions as they are uncommon enough over here... Setanta seems to divide the masses with half thinking of the sports channel & the rest loving it. I really like Fiachra & it got a great reaction on here but hubby still set on Oscar end of!! So is it really everywhere in Dublin so?:( Charlie/Harry fine but not as quirky as Oscar so do you think Oscar has the potential to become the next Jack?

OP posts:
Staceisace · 16/06/2012 03:34

-Charles(Charlie) - probably another that's too popular?
-Harry - also very popular but I still like it
-Elliot - knew a little boy called this and he was lovely so thumbs up!
-Dexter - makes me think of Charlotte Church
-Setanta - not a fan at all :/
-Mylo - Milo is nicer but I can't imagine a 30 year old Milo, you know?
-Blaise - not a fan of this either, I know one and I don't think it suits him so maybe that's why!
-Rocco - Not as bad as Dexter but it's pretty hipster-ish
-Fiachra(old Irish name) - as long as you teach him how to spell it properly!

Happy baby name choosing :)

anniewoo · 15/06/2012 22:05

Pam that should be .....Jaysis Blay izz Grin

stleger · 15/06/2012 14:41

Local kids near me are Cian, Evan, Kai, Codie, Jack, and Aidan. I'd love to be surrounded by Breffni, Blaise, and the occasional Finbarr. In fact any nice aspirational names. (I know two teenagers called Keith, and teenage Alison and Gillian. Cork is in a timewarp).

squoosh · 15/06/2012 14:37

Always room for an extra syllable in Dublin! Grin

PamBeesly · 15/06/2012 14:05

Hi fellow Irish MN'ers! I was just thinking Blaise in a Dublin accent would sound like Blaaay-ez Grin

TinkerMaloo · 15/06/2012 11:49

I like Elliot best :)

squoosh · 15/06/2012 11:46

lurking those names are still popular in Ireland, I know a baby David and two baby Johns.

lurkingaround · 15/06/2012 10:45

Sorry, not keen on any of those names.

Whatever happened to Paul Mark John David etc.? I love these kind of old-fashioned names.
Anyone know ANY child of these names?
Maybe these are the "new" aspirational names?
