What's everyone's take on Hugo?

We're due July and have only chosen one name for him. Hugo Lawrence Rennison. A lot of people aren't sure but I already call my bump Hugo, Huguenot (!), huggles ...

I'd immediately think of somebody from a titled family and or going to Eton. Maybe it's because it was Lady Margery's brothers name in Upstairs Downstairs. But I'm stuck in the past over names. Go with what you like.

TinkerMaloo · 15/06/2012 08:48

not for me (bit too posh), but everyone elses opinion shouldnt and doesnt matter! Use it if you like it! :)

TalHotBlond · 15/06/2012 08:17

I like it.

Badgerina · 15/06/2012 08:16

Like it Grin Makes me think of Victor Hugo and Hugo Cabret.

Love it but always worried that if DS was chubby he'd be Huge Hugo (same for Hugh).

Selks · 14/06/2012 22:56

Prefer Hugh

aquashiv · 14/06/2012 22:54

Love it dont see it as overtly posh just like it.

Lannie33 · 14/06/2012 15:24

Love, love, love it!!!

persephoneplum · 14/06/2012 13:52

It's not my style for some reason, despite being totally my style. It should tick all the boxes but it tickles not a single fancy within me. It's rather swallowy and in the back of throat and unattractive to me.

peachypips · 14/06/2012 12:16

Hee hee! Go for it then!

scummymummy · 14/06/2012 11:54

I think a portly, pompous baby would be funny and cute though.

IWantToGoToThere · 14/06/2012 11:51

peachy I'm afraid my Hugo will probably end up conforming to your sterotype, owing to his portly, professional (wouldn't call myself upper class though some might consider us so) and pompous parentage (he'll get 'pompous' from his father obviously!) :)

I love my son's name and so did everyone else. We call him 'Dugo' as an affectionate nickname as that's how he pronounces it (at 2 years old) as do most of his little friends.

Great name and I'd do it again!

peachypips · 13/06/2012 20:28

I hate to trash people's names, but it makes me think of a fat, pompous, upper class bloke!

nizlopi · 13/06/2012 19:35

Love it

jandymaccomesback · 13/06/2012 19:14

Wasn't there a Hugo on The Vicar of Dibley?

fanjodisfunction · 13/06/2012 12:49

I love it. Great name.

DialMforMummy · 13/06/2012 12:48

Love Hugo and Lawrence.

catinboots · 13/06/2012 12:27

We have a 2 yr old Hugo.

He gets called Hugs for short.

manicinsomniac · 13/06/2012 12:22

Very posh and quite harsh sounding to my ears sorry.

But you should never be put off a name you like by other people (within reason anyway!)

Bugnor · 13/06/2012 10:36

Oh god didn't think of it as posh!! I know it's popular in Spain and Portugal. My nephews called Sebastian so he'll be in good company! Thanks for all the feedback. Smile

Most 'posh' names become less posh over time (read Freakonomics for a good description of this trend) - names like Sebastian, Hugo, Quentin, Arabella, Harriett are now widely enough used to be quite mainstream. But, what would be the problem with having a 'posh' name anyway?

redrubyshoes · 13/06/2012 09:24

Read the book (part of a trilogy) Hugo by the Swedish author Maria Gripe.

One of the greatest characters in childrens' fiction. I love the name.

FfoFfycsecs · 13/06/2012 09:16

I think it was posh about 5 years ago, but it's now a bit wannabe posh IYKWIM. I know a few that want to be posh who've named their children this.
Only my opinion, though, based on the people I know- You must go with what you like and sod the naysayers like me

tigrou · 13/06/2012 08:46

Love it!
