Opinions on Otto?

We started calling the bump Otto, just as a random bump nickname whilst discussing what to actually call him/her. Now we know it is a boy, Otto has kind of stuck and it is growing on us. Is it actually ridiculous and we've just gotten used to it? I'm worried it is too German sounding in a comic way...

I too think of Otto von Bismark. I think it's bad and a bit pretentious.

Great name. My friend's son is called Otto and he is a wonderful 11 year old. I like the simplicity of it and it is a good name all over Europe. Yes, agree, it has some odd associations in Germany and it means eight in Italian and while the bus driver in The Simpsons isn't really a role model, there are some great Ottos - the already mentioned Otto von Bismarck, Otto Preminger, Otto Dix.
Great name - go for it.

It is the name of a cheap food shop in Switzerland. Pile 'em high, sell 'em cheap.
It was always known as Otto's bingo bongo lotto in our house for some reason.

I know a little Otto and think it's a lovely name

However I wouldn't personally choose a "foreign" name if I had no connecting to that country.

kerala, whilst I don't doubt your MIL's bad taste, the name Otto has a VERY un-cool, comical image in Germany, mainly due a very well known comedian who goes by that name as well as being the name of one of the largest mail order companies (Otto Versand). Other old fashioned names (e.g. Karl, Leopold, Walter) seem to be making a comeback, but Otto is just too 'silly'.

We would have used this had we had a boy. My MIL is German though and was horrified when we told her this is what DD would have been called if a DS. Her comment was that Otto is a name for a "farm boy" all the better reason to use it as MIL has the worst taste of anyone I know so if she doesn't like it its a real endorsement Grin.

My daughter has a Barbie film called Rapunzel and Gothel's pet ferret is called Otto in it. That's all I can think of Blush

But it sounds like a nice name.

Otto - 8 in Italian ..... Or it makes me think of a big black dog...no idea why!!!
Other than that its your bump so your choice!

I'm not keen. Maybe because the only Otto I know (10yr Old rugby player) is the meanest, most spoilt, nastiest child I have ever had the displeasure to come across and his patents weren't much better either.
