Linden or Lynden for a boy? Too girly?
As an alternative to Rowan.

Lyndon Johnson spelled it with a Y and an O, but I like Linden too. Very nice name and I would consider it definitely a boy's name, probably because of the President, who was definitely quite a macho man.

Unter den Linden is a lovely boulevard in Berlin, named for the trees flanking it.

Daragh is an Irish tree name, referring to the oak tree.

vess · 10/06/2012 23:31

I like it.

PercyFilth · 10/06/2012 23:08

Never heard of Linden (as in the tree) as a name, but have a friend who is married to a Lyndon. He is Welsh and known as Lyn.

marshmallowpies · 10/06/2012 21:16

Strange that most people have experienced Linden as a boys name...have been trying to remember who the (female) Linden was that I knew: she is a Kiwi, perhaps it's more commonly known as a girls name over there.

pinkthechaffinch · 10/06/2012 20:59

Another mum of a Lyndon here!

Mine is 10 and loves his name- he has never been called Lynda, despite my dad's worries and it is a name that is growing on him more as he gets older IYSWIM.

It's a nice 'tree name' too, there are a lot of lime trees round our way, and we like calling them lindens.

TheQueensKnickers · 10/06/2012 20:54

CZJ has a brother named Linden. Definitely a boys name.

JoInScotland · 10/06/2012 20:44

I like your Nature theme, it's nice. I went to school with a family that had opted for "bird names". Raven was in my class - he had jet black hair and brown eyes and it really suited him. Robin was a few years older and sort of blond, very laid back. Heron was tall and gangly and a few years younger than me. They had a sister Wren but she had left school by the time I got to know the boys.

Takver · 10/06/2012 20:25

Maybe its just co-incidence that I know so many 'tree' named males Grin They're a mix of ages (6 up to 40s) and from various different places/backgrounds, so its not just a local thing! I guess though once you start noticing them, you look out for more IYSWIM.

(Rowan, Ash and Ashley are all primary school age, and definitely their given names. I think some of the others - Oakley at least - might be nicknames derived from surnames.)

lilaloves · 10/06/2012 19:41

Sorry Takver, but I don't know a single male with any of those names so maybe they are just uncommon to me.

While looking up the name Linden on google in brought up in the search that The singer you mentioned had died a few years ago, really sad.I remember he had a great voice.

I think of Lynden David Hall.

Nice name.

Takver · 10/06/2012 16:33

I'd agree it sounds either unisex or more like a boys name. I can think offhand of boys/men I know called:
Willow
Ash
Larch
Rowan
Oakley
Ashley
So nature names are definitely not that uncommon for boys!

tammy234 · 10/06/2012 16:17

Lynden and Linden sound masculine to me.

badtime · 10/06/2012 10:43

I assumed it was for a boy when I saw the thread title, too.

Spink · 10/06/2012 07:46

Like it and thought it was a boys name when I saw the thread title

marshmallowpies · 10/06/2012 07:40

Linden with an I instead of Y I would expect to be a girl (Lindy for short) but if you like it for a boy, go for it!

lilaloves · 10/06/2012 07:25

That would be Lindam

is it not a stairgate?

prefer rowan.

dubz · 09/06/2012 23:14

Just asked Dh (english) and he says linden/lyndon is definitely a male and we both prefer linden james

dubz · 09/06/2012 23:11

The only Linden I know is a girl (woman) I was at uni with. She's lovely, and hence I think of it as a lovely name. In the same class there was also a Rowan, also female. Also a lovely name. I know quite a few, all female apart from the two famous ones Aitkinson an Williams. I'm in Scotland btw

memphis83 · 09/06/2012 21:59

I have a Lyndon, never had anything but positive comments about it, even strangers who hear me call him comment on it.
Met two men with the name since both called Lyndon/Linden and they both love their name.

mumofjust1 · 09/06/2012 21:56

Absolutely love it!

lilaloves · 09/06/2012 21:55

What middle name did you go for?
Dh likes Linden James or Linden Joseph

iknowwho · 09/06/2012 21:50
