Hi all,
My DP has suggested Mirran for a girl. I wasn't sure at first but it's growing on me, would like to know people's thoughts on this?
We are due a little surprise in sept, our boys name is decided, but struggling with names for a wee girl.
Xx

I've worked with a Muirne and a Murrin and Mirren. It's grown on me. We have an Eilidh. I'd use Ceitidh if there was a next time for Katie

CJfromTheWestWing · 09/06/2012 21:26

i love Mirren or Mirrin, don't like the Murrin spelling or Mirran.

First two spellings are fab.

freerangeeggs · 09/06/2012 19:13

Mirren is quite popular in Scotland atm.

The girl in Braveheart's name is spelled Murron.

Both anglicisations of Muireann.

I like it

EllenParsons · 09/06/2012 19:05

What about Merran? I worked with someone called this and thought it was quite nice and unusual, but not too weird. Mirran looked like a misspelling of Merran to me!

bookbird · 09/06/2012 13:45

Moirin (pronounced Murren) is Irish and is very pretty.

PercyFilth · 09/06/2012 13:37

I thought of St Mirren football team.

TheMonster · 09/06/2012 11:52

I immediately thought of Helen. It would make you sound like a massive fan.

FormerlyTitledUntidy · 09/06/2012 11:50

Muireann is pronounced like mwur inn, not like murr an. it's a hard sound to get right if not used to speaking Irish.
Mirran does look like a typo to me I'm afraid.

CurlyCasper · 09/06/2012 11:40

The character in Braveheart was called Murron. but the real wife of William Wallace was Marian/Marion. The film makers changed it AFAIK to avoid confusion with Maid Marian. They are all of the Mary family of names. Also like Mara, which is Gaelic for the sea, and Merryn, apparently derived from Merry.

EverybodysSleepyEyed · 08/06/2012 21:56

That's a nice meaning - are you in Ireland? I would pick the spelling that is more common in the part of the world you live in.

Shiny - Winston is ok.....

How about telling DH to go into a pub/cafe/bus and introduce himself to someone as Spartacus and see the reaction he gets

BetterChoicesChair · 08/06/2012 21:48

I think it's Muireann (Mirren) too. Perhaps I've spelled it wrong but it is a proper name. Try searching threads on here for Scottish/Gaelic names; there are lots of name pedants about Smile.

Ishoes · 08/06/2012 21:46

Mirren is the name of a saint and it quite popular here in scotland-well I know 3 anywayGrin I like it op.

WeeNurse27 · 08/06/2012 21:46

Miran - Irish - worthy of admiration

everybody - we will need that time!

DH is currently suggesting Rocky, Spartacus or Winston. I've told him to buy an Alsation!

5madthings · 08/06/2012 21:42

i like it, is it cornish? i have a Merryn, its a lovely name, the best infact Grin

EverybodysSleepyEyed · 08/06/2012 21:41

Going back to OP - what is the meaning of the name/variants on here?

EverybodysSleepyEyed · 08/06/2012 21:41

you have a few weeks to come to an agreement!

DH never liked the names I liked but he agreed both times and now admits that they really suit our kids and our 'compromise' names wouldn't have worked. He often looks at DS or DD and says 'he/she really is an X'!

The first time we had a girls name sorted and then found out we were having a boy

The second time I heard a girls name which stuck in my head. Found out we were having a girl and stopped worrying about the boys name because we were completely stumped!

jaffacakehips · 08/06/2012 21:39

I know it as Murrin

shinyblackgrape · 08/06/2012 21:37

Really Everybody? We'd better start thinking

The problem we have is that we both like very different names do not sure how we'll ever agree in anything. Need to buy a book, I think. Looking online is just not the same.

EverybodysSleepyEyed · 08/06/2012 21:32

sorry to blow the theory but the opposite happened to my sister and they twice had baby no name for a long while!

shinyblackgrape · 08/06/2012 21:31

Really Poppy?

I'm 16 weeks pregnant with first DC and DH and I can only think of girls names!

PoppyWearer · 08/06/2012 21:22

FWIW, we have had two gender surprises. One girl, one boy.

In both cases, we were unknowingly much more decisive about names for the correct gender. And meh about the other gender.

Which means you're having a boy .

Ignore me

StepOutOfSpring · 08/06/2012 21:17

It sounds surnamey (Helen Mirren).

Miranda?

lisaro · 08/06/2012 21:16

Fecking awful, try too hard pretentious.

NicholasTeakozy · 08/06/2012 21:14

I know a woman who called her daughter Myrrann. I thought it was lovely meself.
