Do I need to ask my sister first???

Hi

I'm 39 weeks and 5 days so our baby could be born any day now!

We do not know if it is a boy or girl. Our boys name is Charlie Jacob ( Charlie was my grandad and Jacob my husbands). My sister has a little girl called Charlotte. She is only one years old and is at the moment know as Charlotte. My sister has mentioned shortening to Charly in tha past.

We really don't want to reveal names before baby is born. We decided if its a boy we would phone my sister first and ask if she would mind if we use Charlie. I am now wondering if this is really needed! When our daughter was born we spent several hours alone with her before telling anyone. I would like this again but would find it odd if I couldn't call him Charlie in those hours.

Am I being silly? I'm sure m sister will see no issue in it at all!

What would you do?

Thanks

ooops should have read to the end...congratulations to the birth of little Charlie

FairLadyRantALot · 17/06/2012 01:49

was your grandad Charles or Charlie? Just wondering as Charles is obviously the "correct" form anyway....
but as others said might be best to go for Jacob Charlie

Staceisace · 16/06/2012 22:25

Congratulations Bella :) Charlie is a lovely name - I hope you're all happy and healthy and wish you all the best for the future.

On reading through this thread I was reminded of a situation in our family:

My aunt refused to let my uncle (her husband) call their son Daniel because we have a cousin called Danielle or James as my brother is called Jamie. It wasn't a big deal really and I don't think my uncle's siblings would have minded, it was just my aunt (the pregnant lady!) and my gran that had issues with it.

Brilliant news! Love Charlie!

RabidAnchovy · 12/06/2012 13:20

Welcome baby Charlie x

ProcrastinationAteMyMorning · 12/06/2012 13:14

Congratulations!

How are you and Charlie doing? Hope you've got a decent kraamverzorgster - the good ones are worth their weight in gold.

5madthings · 12/06/2012 09:19

yay congratulations, given you and your sister live in different countries i cant see that it would be an issue, esp as your neice doesnt get called charley if she already did have that as a nickname then it would be odd tho!

pictish · 12/06/2012 09:13

How about Jacob Charles then?
Jake, Jakey, Jack etc...

I don'tt think using Charlie is a big deal tbh, but personally speaking I probably wouldn't.

CharlieBoo · 12/06/2012 09:09

Congratulations... Charlie is a FAB name

NoWayNoHow · 12/06/2012 09:01

Congratulations! Glad it all sorted itself out - welcome to the world, Charlie!

AnitaBlake · 12/06/2012 08:52

Congratulations! What a kerfuffle! FHs sister and first cousin are both Sarahs I would comment on it but my grandads younger brother has the same name as my grandad, we just call then Big X and Little X lol. My great aunt and uncle had two children a boy and a girl. They called one after her mum and the boy after his dad.

In the long term it makes no difference at all really!

Charlie was born at 22.54 yesterday! When I asked my sister if she minded she thought I was joking! Not an issue for her at all!

OP, just saw your update - congrats! Hope it's a swift and painless adventure!

"I've got Charlie and Charley coming to visit this weekend"

"Are you taking Charley to Charlie's christening?"

"I'm getting Charlie's birthday present today, are you getting him something from CHarley?"

"Charlie! Charley! Stop fighting!!"

There's hundrends or permeatations like this. Just every day stuff. It's really not that unusual. Just addressing the kids when they're together would be annoying for me. It's how I feel whenever our friends come over with their DS with the same name. I never know which bloody child anyone is talking about or to.

JennyPiccolo · 11/06/2012 12:32

I have two cousins with the same name on my dad's side.

Think it could be quite cute for a wee boy and girl cousin set to have similar names.

Sandalwood · 11/06/2012 12:29

Good luck!

Bellaholland · 11/06/2012 12:20

Oh well! You'll all find out soon what I did as my waters broke an hour ago!

"Um, every single time their grandparents talk about the GC???"

they don't list names do they? they say "OOO I have 5, 3 grandsons and 2 granddaughters, the eldest is off to uni in sept.." or sililar don't they?

3boysgirlontheway · 11/06/2012 12:07

Nowaynohow My parents or inlaws never list off all of their grandchildrens names when someone asks about them, why would they? They might give the name of the newest, but, in general if someone is asking about the grandchildren they will just want a "they are great" sort of answer.

Even if you had to list them, you could put other names in between them, no need to say them together unless they are the only two grandchildren!

goodygumdrops · 11/06/2012 08:36

If i was your sister i would still call my girl Charlie for short. She is older so you are the ones who will look a bit strange if anything(although i'm not sure it matters too much but if anyone does think its odd, its you they will think are odd). I also think if you really thought it was a non issue for your sister you would ask her about it.

HavePatience · 11/06/2012 07:58

Why on earth would the option to call Charlotte, Charlie be taken away? Confused
I have cousins with the same name... It has never been a problem. In fact, a special bond between them Smile

NoWayNoHow · 11/06/2012 07:53

3boys - "How often will anyone have to list their names together?"

Um, every single time their grandparents talk about the GC???

NoWayNoHow · 11/06/2012 07:52

I would ask. I was probably slightly irrationally upset when our very close friends called their new baby the NN version of our DS's name (after we'd actually had a conversation about names the week before where nothing was mentioned). If it had been my own sister who did the same, she'd have got a short shrift, and I know my mother wuold've been miserable about it too having 2 GC with virtually identical names.

Your sister isn't already calling her DD Charley, but she HAS told you that it is her intention for the future. Put yourself in her shoes and imagine how you would feel.

And YY to the poster who said "Why not Jacob Charlie?"
