So I want some opinions. Our surname ends with an a and is Mediterranean and has 3 syllables. I have no favourites and ultimately will give the list to dh to choose from but would like your opinions and suggestions first.

Boys:
Caius
Orin
Marius
Lucien
Zacchaeus (nn Zach)
Julius

Girls:
Violetta/violette
Aurelia
Francesca
Giulietta
Valentina
Allegra

Nice lists!

I like Zaccheus and Allegra the most.

PrunellaDeVille · 04/06/2012 13:15

love both Lucien and Francesca

Honky · 04/06/2012 13:16

Lucien and Valentina, lovely

AceOfBase · 04/06/2012 13:17

Thanks. I hope dh likes them too. I've told him I will be choosing this one as he chose the other two so he must choose one of each from my lists unlea he hates them in which case I will make a new list :o I WILL name this baby (sort of)

I'm not keen on Orin, Caius or Allegra. The rest are very nice imo.

Psammead · 04/06/2012 16:06

Caius - very nice.
Orin - cool and unusual
Marius - not over keen
Lucien - lovely
Zacchaeus - dislike.
Julius - very nice

Violette - depends on how you say it. Veye-let or Vee-oh-lett-eh? The first one sounds too similar to violent imo.
Aurelia - beautiful
Francesca - beautiful
Guilietta - dislike.
Valentine - ok
Allegra - lovely.

Hopandaskip · 04/06/2012 16:14

I think many English people will mangle Guilietta if that matters to you.

Boys -- like Caius and Julius the best. Lucien is too much like Lucifer for me. I love Zac, but not as fond of Zacchaeus.

Girls -- like Francesca, Aurelia and Violette the best. Allegra is allergy medicine here so don't like that one and I don't like Valentine at all.

Disneydreams · 04/06/2012 18:16

Lucien and valentina Smile

JohnnyBodensLovechild · 04/06/2012 20:19

Boys - only like Lucien and Julius, not keen on the others.

Girls - all lovely except Allegra, which sounds like a car to me (all I hear is Renault Allegra).

Especially like Aurelia. Apparently I am a Roman at heart :)

Dillydollydaydream · 04/06/2012 21:38

Ah. Really liking Allegra not heard that before.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 05/06/2012 19:10

Like Lucien.

Don't like any of the girls' names, sorry. Love Violet though.

tigrou · 05/06/2012 19:57

As I child, I used to imagine I would have a girl called Giulietta (and she'd be a tom boy, naturally). Still love the name. Also Francesca and Valentina (I know sisters iwth those names), but not Valentine, and I much prefer Violetta to Violette - if you want that, go for Violet, but I'm not a fan.
Boys, Lucien wins hands down for me.

thereistheball · 06/06/2012 07:21

I love these names, but how do you pronounce Caius? Anyone who has been to Cambridge (where there is a Gonville and Caius College) will pronounce it 'keys' - if you don't want that then what about Gaius, which is pronounced as it is spelled?

AceOfBase · 06/06/2012 17:18

Just to clarify violette is pn vee-oh-LET with the stress on the let and doesn't really sound like violent to me :o and caius is pn Kay-us not keys (although I did consider that pn too)

AllRiseForHerVaj · 06/06/2012 18:26

Hmmmm. Not keen on your boy's names, sorry. Orin is OK.

Your girls names are lovely. My favourites are Valentina and Aurelia, but they are all beautiful.

hugebumpbelly · 07/06/2012 15:08

I love Julius and Lucian! Also like Valentina and Aurelia.

AceOfBase · 07/06/2012 15:32

I'm not really bothered if other people mangle the name. Dd has a v uncommon name (as far as I know the only one in Britain- its barely googlable) and I just correct those who say it wrong. Saying that I don't even bother saying our last name and just spell it now since nobody but nobody can say it right. I don't care. Any suggestions though? I picked these names off the top of my head so no consultation of books etc and wonder if I missed something I might love. I suppose its fairly obvious the kind of names I like :

MagdalenaAlec · 07/06/2012 16:16

Love Allegra, Francesca and Violette, not keen on the others.
In the "Latin" category are also:
Atticus
Flavius, Flavian
Taddeus
Silas
Augustus
Gaius
Vespasian
Tarquin, Torquil

StepOutOfSpring · 07/06/2012 16:20

My favourites are Marius or Julius, Violetta or Aurelia

Caius - too Cambridge college and pronounciation could be an issue
Orin - too orangey
Marius - like
Lucien - like
Zacchaeus (nn Zach) - like
Julius - like

Violetta/violette - like
Aurelia - like
Francesca - OK
Giulietta - not so keen, the Giu is odd in English
Valentina - OK
Allegra - OK

AceOfBase · 07/06/2012 16:47

Thanks for the suggestions there magdalena I love atticus but unfortunately I know dh wouldn't. It's a brand of clothing (although it makes me think of jem and boo- I love tkamb but dh doesn't read so wouldn't make the association) I like Thaddeus but not taddeus I like the th sound. Not silas (hollyoaks) or Augustus (willy wonka) and although I do like Gaius I would imagine it being an easy name to make fun of. Certainly on the right lines though. Any more suggestions are v welcome everyone :o Flowers

mathanxiety · 07/06/2012 17:13

Allegra is not in the same league as the others imo. It's more of a car or allergy medicine name than something to call a child.

How about Drusilla?

Or would you like to go a little Greek?
Theodosia
Agatha

Or Swedish -- Pernilla...

AceOfBase · 07/06/2012 17:23

I do like Greek. But not those ones :o and drusilla is one of the ugly sisters (cinderella is dds favourite film) but I quite like pernilla. It's my cousins name (my family are Swedish) but everyone calls her pernie. Dd is named after dhs cousin (well she has the same name as we liked it not literally named after her) so I wouldn't have a problem poaching the name. I may put it on my list.
