"Spirited" Boys Names!

Hi folks, long time viewer, first time poster!

Hubby and I have baby number one on the way, we know it's a boy and are looking for a name that is unusual , Scottish and makes a statement (hopefully not that we're alcoholics! Haha).

Anyway, we are both Whisky fans, indeed we met through mutual Whisky Society friends.

With that in mind we were thinking of a Whisky themed name. Now, there are some fairly obvious ones, Ben, Glen, even Moray (pronounced Murray) or Rinnes, but they don't really resonate with our tastes.

We currently have a short list of Lagavulin, Laphroaig, or, if this is too "out there", Peater (I guess an alternative spelling of a classic).

What do you think?

What do I think? I think you are nuts and it would be cruel to your future child.

When naming a child please remember that they have to live with it, not you.

Lagavulin and Laphroaig scream whisky at me having been around all the distilleries on Islay

I'd have serious reservations about using a single malt brand name as a first name, particularly a distinctive one like Lagavulin or Laphroaig.

And Peater sounds like you can't spell Peter.

How about naming him after someone important in the world of Whiskey, but not so obvious to anyone who isn't you or DH?

If you are totally wedded to brand names, male sure it's a single malt, not a blend, or you'll have doomed him to a life of ostracism from the upper echelons of the whisky fraternity. Wonder if you could tuck a vintage year in as a second name?

Are you meaning this as a first name. Seems cruel. This is middle name territory. You might get away with Talisker as a first name.

We always said we would call a son Oban (nothing to do with whisky though) but didnt and I sometimes regret it. Think it would make a good name.

La-Froyg is simply dreadful.

There's a Laughlin in my family tree, dunno if there's a whiskey to go with that, though.

Yes to Torran - great choice as an actual name (!) and I think it's lovely, very Scottish and not popular but not totally unknown either.

How about Allan like Macallan? Or...

I think being called after a recognisable rand of whiskey would be something of a burden, and as a concept is really quite naff. Possibly OK for a middle name, but really pet naming not person naming territory. If you found something so obscure that you'd need to be a fellow whiskey society member to recognise the whiskey relationship that might be OK, assuming that the name was in addition nice sounding.

I think it's a good way to choose a name! I haven't got any suggestions as I don't really know any Scottish whiskys, but I think as long as it sounds like a name and not just a drink it's good e.g. Stella is a nice name, but also a drink and I don't think it's tacky like Chardonnay for example.

What a great idea. You and your DH sound like you have a great sense of fun about you and I suspect that you will spread that joy into your life. I hope you find a suitable name. I personally don't like whisky so have no input.

Oh dearie dearie me. There are some beautiful Scottish names for boys around (and girls too) -- surely you can find something a bit better then Peaty (he's gonna be called compost at school) or Malt ( er, loaf?) or indeed the name of a branded consumer product!

Erm sorry, but I think the whole thing is a terrible idea and unbelievably tacky.

Your son will have to live with this name, be kind... He is a person in his own right, not an extension of your hobby!
