anyone know an Octavia, and what does it get shortened to? I love it, but want a nickname option too...

Octavia is great loads of fab nn options - yy to Vivi (natch Wink ) but Tavy is fab too, as is Tay.

I love Teifi (pronounced Tayvi & nn Tay) as a name in itself.

TheGrandOldDuke · 04/06/2012 20:43

My personal obsession with nicknames is that mine name doesn't, and I always HATED that. I wanted to be 'katy' or 'vicky' or something cutesy ending in 'y'. Instead I had what I think is a horrible name that doesn't easily shorten despite being 3syllables long. So I don't want to burden our daughter similarly, in case she feels the same.

I don't know what to go for.

Which is best, Octavia, Arabella or Cordelia?

That was my first choice if we were having a girl (it's a boy, and we're totally stumped)! I love it and you should totally use it. Ours would have been shortened to Tavi (tay-vee) or Tavia.

Creany172 · 03/06/2012 20:43

How about Avi - pronounced ayvee. I have an Olivia who gets called Livi and an Imogen who gets called Imi. I also have a Sophie and she gets called Soph.

Booette · 03/06/2012 20:43

I would probably go for Tavi/Tavy/Tavie.

ColdGlassofWine · 03/06/2012 20:30

My daughter is 13 and is an Octavia. I didn't want it shortened but when she was 6 and joined a new gym class - all the girls were asked to introduce themselves - after hearing 'evie, maddie, beccie...'etc, feeling a little different she turned around and said ' I'm occie' and the name has stuck ever since. I loathed it at first but over the years it has grown on me and I can't imagine her known as anything else. I'm probably the only person who calls her Octavia , I still love the name as much as when I first chose it and think it's beautiful.

oggy

sugarspiceandallthingsnice324 · 03/06/2012 20:10

We know and Octavia - who is called Tia for a nn.

MagdalenaAlec · 03/06/2012 18:28

If DC2 is a girl and we choose Octavia (instead of Adelaide, nn Ada) we will probably call her Vinny, as I am not fond of Tavi (reminds me of the horrible wannabe Anna Wintour :( )

BellaOfTheBalls · 03/06/2012 15:35

I know an Octavia known as Via (vee-ah), or Vee.

Gingerbreadlatte · 03/06/2012 15:33

V-ee ?

wordfactory · 03/06/2012 14:09

DD has a close friend called Octavia and she is known by her class mates as Tavi (pronounced Tayvi)

Re: "What on earth is the MN obsession with nicknames??" (elah11) - probably because names will always get shortened or turned into nicknames especially when they go to school so maybe some people want to pre-empt this and get an idea of what their childs name will be shortened to or maybe they want to steer it in an acceptable direction.

The Octavia I knew was known as Ockie.

foad · 03/06/2012 12:11

Ava

SurprisinglyCurvaceousPirate · 03/06/2012 12:10

I went to school with an Octavia, but she was always Ocky to us Smile.

pickledsiblings · 03/06/2012 12:03

I agree with letting the nn evolve. We have a Joseph nn Jody. It could end up being something like Tia ot Vita, both lovely.

SmallWhiteWine · 03/06/2012 11:17

Occy is the one I'd automatically think of.

Panzee · 03/06/2012 11:16

elah11 From some of his comments I think the Occy I knew was so embarrassed by his name (despite having gone to Eton!) that he shortened it any way he could.

BitchyHen · 03/06/2012 11:16

An ex-colleague is named Octavia but only ever introduces herself as Tavia. She also got called Tee.

Panzee · 03/06/2012 11:15

I knew an Octavius called Occie.

elah11 · 03/06/2012 11:12

What on earth is the MN obsession with nicknames?? Every baby name thread is more about the nn than the name Confused . Octavia is a lovely name, so just leave it as Octavia, no need to make it anything else :)

WinkyWinkola · 03/06/2012 11:06

Viva? Vivi?

WhatWouldJoanJettDo · 03/06/2012 11:01

For me, one of the things I like about Octavia is that there is no automatic nickname. My name is automatically shortened by almost everyone, and I hate it. Maybe if you really want a nickname, you could do something with a middle name?

Bonsoir · 03/06/2012 10:57

Oc

Tav

Tavi

zxcv123 · 03/06/2012 10:55

The only Octavia I've ever met (who was the eighth child) was sometimes called Octavia and sometimes Lucy. Don't suppose that helps you really.
