How would you pronounce Joel?

DH and I are thinking of Joel for a boy (we don't know yet what we're having). I have always pronounced it JO-ul, i.e. two syllables. But it came up in one of the readings at church last Sunday, and the reader pronounced it Jole, which I don't like as much. Anyone know which of these is the standard pronunciation?

OrfWithHerEduStudent · 01/06/2012 20:41

Jole.

OddBoots · 01/06/2012 20:38

'Jole' although if I'm feeling festive it is 'Joe-ell'

TheOneWithTheCrown · 01/06/2012 20:36

I say Jole to rhyme with sole.

I think if you didn't like it that way then it's a no go as plenty of people will call him Jole.
