Realised we made a huge mistake re. DC's surname!

Have name changed as this is massively outing. When DC1 was born DH and I weren't yet married so decided to give DS a double barrelled name as I didn't want to have a completely different surname to him. All was good, we thought it sounded good at the time and, actually, it does work with his first name. However it sounds utterly crap with everything we like for DC2.

The surname is Fox-Wilde and now I kind of think it doesn't work well at all. DC1 is in reception so knows his name etc, but would it be weird if
a) DC1 and DC2 have slightly different surnames (DC2 would just be Wilde which is DH's surname)
b) we changed DC1's surname to just Wilde?

And the person who the surname belonged to had a hyphenated first name, something like Anne-Marie.

Mouthful!

Lunarlyte · 01/06/2012 17:11

I agree that it is a very impressive sounding surname.

MoonHare · 01/06/2012 17:09

Fox-Wilde is a fab surname.

Agree that Ivo probably works least well with your surname, the others are fine with it though. Like the suggestions of giving Gus a longer first name then shorten if you want to as a nn - especially like Fergus Fox-Wilde, love alliteration.

Romy Fox-Wilde, hmm wouldn't have thought of 'roaming fox' if you hadn't mentioned it but now you have I see what you mean. Romily is lovely.

AKE2012 · 01/06/2012 17:09

What a great name. Id leave it and make you all Fox-Wilde.
I am having a surname dilemma of my own. My child is named after her dad. He doesnt have any contact. My child asked if they culd change their name to my surname. My child is under 16 years old so id have to apply to do it.

GoPoldark · 01/06/2012 17:08

Romy Fox-Wilde is also utterly amazing.

Sorry OP you're in the minority here big time! Grin

GoPoldark · 01/06/2012 17:07

fgs OP, change that name to Fox-Wilde IMMEDIATELY. How can you not??

GoPoldark · 01/06/2012 17:07

Gustav Fox-Wilde!!

AMAZING!!!!!!

surroundedbyblondes · 01/06/2012 17:04

Sorry, didn't have time to read all posts but I think you should all become Fox-Wildes. Sounds great Smile

Pooka · 01/06/2012 17:02

I insist that you all must become fox-Wilde immediately. Fantastic surname. Am jealous!

I don't think Ivo works brilliantly with it, but gus does and as other posters have said it could easily be lengthened.

Romy goes well too.

StupidSurname · 01/06/2012 17:02

We weren't married when we had DC1 but have got married since and I changed my name to Wilde

eurochick · 01/06/2012 16:58

Fox-Wilde is a great name. Use it for your second child too!

Did you change names when you married? (The wording of your post suggests that you were not married when you had your first child but are now but I might have that wrong.)

higgle · 01/06/2012 16:53

Zia goes fine, could you have a Romala or Romily and use Romy as a nickname?

redrugroffle · 01/06/2012 16:50

Romilly or Rosetta?

Frontpaw · 01/06/2012 16:48

I love it. Of course, I would have gone for Wilde-Fox and named any daughter 'Vixen' but that's just me!

Bonsoir · 01/06/2012 16:47

I think Romy Fox-Wilde is über cool.

raindropsinmyhair · 01/06/2012 16:47

I LOVE that surname, it's fab. We all have double barrelled names but not as cool as fox-wilde

Envy

Jesse fox-wilde is a gorgeous name

Bonsoir · 01/06/2012 16:46

Agree with others - Fox-Wilde is very nice so don't change it!

Bonsoir · 01/06/2012 16:45

It is really weird for two children with the same two biological parents to have different surnames. Indeed, in France, where I live, all children must have the same surname when they have the same two parents. In my family, the DSSs have DP's surname, and DD has a double-barrelled surname (DP's surname followed by my surname).

ComeAlongPond · 01/06/2012 16:41

How about Romily or Rowen instead of Romy, if you think Romy is too like 'roaming'? Robyn? You could always shorted Romily to Romy.

IslaValargeone · 01/06/2012 16:38

Too much potential for catalogue confusion with that one methinks.

StupidSurname · 01/06/2012 16:37

Actually my other thread has disappeared off the face of Mumsnet (i.e. page 3) so shouldn't be too damaging. DS is Jesse, which at the time we thought sounded lovely with surname but now DH thinks is pretentious Hmm

For this one we like (in order of preference)

Gus
Ivo
Coby
Denzel

Favourite two we think sounds a bit crap with surname, second two we don't love as much.

For a girl we only like Zia and Romy. IMO we can't use Romy as all I can think of is a roaming fox. Am I the only one seeing these faults?

youarekidding · 01/06/2012 16:36

As usual Chippings first thought was the same as mine.

Fox-Wilde sounds very distinguished and strong. My DS has a double barrelled surname too. Works for us.

GobblersKnob · 01/06/2012 16:36

Angus
Fergus
Augustus

Love 'em all, particually Augustus

Also like Argus.

Bartimosaurus · 01/06/2012 16:34

Gustave?

monkeymoma · 01/06/2012 16:32

I really like it! don't change it Grin
I think that because they are short surnames, they'ld go well with a first name with a few syllables, like:
Anthony Fox-Wilde
Felicity Fox-Wilde

  • argh it's such a cool name I have surname envy!
