Help which one? Our fav is jemima but we hate the nicknames and the fact that it may not go down well in the states where we visit often. Opinions greatly appreciated!!

I have a Louisa and I love it, always gets nice comments. We sometimes call her Lolly, or Weeza (her big bro's pronounciation!).

Astrid is gorgeous. Would put it on my wish list if DH's surname wasn't so horrible unusual.

Jemima is nice but makes me think of Playschool - just my generation though!

PercyFilth · 01/06/2012 00:14

No idea what you're on about, so I'll leave it there.

scottishmummy · 01/06/2012 00:09

I suspect that elective choice

PercyFilth · 01/06/2012 00:06

I'm afraid I don't understand your banter jargon.

scottishmummy · 31/05/2012 23:55

sexyis value laden
nonsense to pretend otherwise

PercyFilth · 31/05/2012 23:50

Attractive and sexy qualities are not necessarily physical, though, are they. I would also disagree that sexy = 'available' and 'up for it'.

By the way, scottishmummy, your screen name always conjures up for me a figure swathed from head to toe in tight tartan bandages. But maybe someone somewhere would find that image 'sexy'. :o It's all subjective, really.

sexy is value laden based on attractiveness, not a positive set attributes

emmyloo2 · 31/05/2012 23:16

I adore Louisa. Astrid is also nice but I really dont like jemima. I just find it quite clunky. But Louisa is truly fabulous!

PercyFilth · 31/05/2012 23:13

teafortwo, nothing wrong with sexy. I wouldn't see it as a vulgar word at all. Who wouldn't rather be sexy than, er, not sexy!

wild · 31/05/2012 23:09

No

teafortwo · 31/05/2012 23:09

Thanks Bibulus - you are right I was thinking of the name in terms of a lifelong name - she will be a woman for much longer than she will be a girl - and much much longer than she'll be a baby! Scottishmummy's raised eyebrow has made me realise that I have been living in Paris too long! You see... "sexy" is a positive word more closely linked to sophistication, femininity and education here - I momentarily forgot that it is a more vulgar word choice in the UK Blush!!!!!!!!

Anonymumous · 31/05/2012 23:02

Astrid Louisa sounds good to me!

scottishmummy · 31/05/2012 23:02

sexy in our culture=available, up for it,attractive to men. not values I'd necessarily comfortably ascribe to female name

PercyFilth · 31/05/2012 22:59

"describing child name as sexy
gross and inappropriate"

Ridiculous thing to say. It is a name, not a "child name". A name is not just for a child but also for the adult s/he will become. The poster who used the word made it perfectly clear that it was in an adult context.

Squinty · 31/05/2012 22:45

louisa

the others are vile

sorry.... not like me to have such strong opinions, but there you go!

QuickLookBusy · 31/05/2012 22:44

Dottie, i wouldnt bet on people not using nns.

We chose our dd2 name specifically because there are no nns. It didn't stop lots of people making them up. She is 18 now and is called numerous derivatives of her name by various friends and relatives. If people want to shorten names they will I'm afraid. So my advice would be if you don't like the nns do not choose that name.

I love Louisa and really don't think it's commonly used. It's a classic name.

StepOutOfSpring · 31/05/2012 22:41

Louisa is not overly popular at the moment. It's a classic so everyone's heard of it, but it's not too faddy.

Bibulus · 31/05/2012 22:35

also - disagree about 'sexy' point, she's not going to be a child forever. It would be good if more people thought about the lifelong implications of name choices.

threeleftfeet · 31/05/2012 22:34

Louisa and Astrid are lovely. Particularly like Astrid.

Not as keen on Jemima.

DottieRose · 31/05/2012 22:34

I absolutely adore Jemima but hate the nicknames!! But if you only use Jemima from day one then everyone else will. I don't get why people even need to use nicknames! Go for Jemima!

Bibulus · 31/05/2012 22:33

I love love love Astrid, so beautiful and unusual and the name of the girl that all the Beatles fell in love with!

ellesabe · 31/05/2012 22:30

My Jemima has never been called puddle duck. Except by me when she learnt how to quack Grin Makes for a cute party trick!!!

sugarspiceandallthingsnice324 · 31/05/2012 22:20

Jemima is lovely. My niece is called Jemima and her name is never shortened she is just Jemima - there is no rule that say you have to use a nn.

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 31/05/2012 22:20

Louisa and Astrid are both beautiful.

Louisa is v classy and not that common I think. Astrid is quirky without being outlandish.

I think I would vote for Louisa on the fact that is has nice nicknames and I think it would travel well Smile

Jemima is a nice name but I think she would be called Puddleduck (happy for Mums of Jemimas to contradict me!).
