Betsy v Meredith v Scarlett

If we have a girl I have been keen on Betsy for years since DS1 - it was our girls choice. Would probably go with Elizabeth for birth certificate.

But we do really like Meredith - however I dont like Merry as a NN - I would like Edie - but then this could be hard to get people to go along with especially as DS is called Edgar - we never ever call him Eddie but nursery do :( . Also think its a slightly irksome name (which I like!) but will probably get the same negative reactions at first that Edgar did.

DH recently suggested Scarlett - which was a fave of mine way back when having a kid was just something that would happen a long time away.

So whats your preference!!

Our surname is a bit cute but not excessively so.

I've just read the last comment - d'oh!
But definitely think you made the best choice :-), congratulations!

I love Meredith as a name. Scarlett is ok. Not keen at all on Betsy sorry, sounds like a celebrity/pet animal name - if Elizabeth on documents this makes it better, prefer Beth as short name for this tho.

Sorry this sounds bit harsh but really not keen on Betsy.

Thanks for all the comments!!

Our gorgeous little girl came out looking very much like a ... Meredith!! :o

Nickname might be Edie but will see what evolves

I adore Scarlett mainly because my fav film/book is Gone with the Wind so I see it as a classic . It has become popular again recently but I still love it.

Not keen on Betsy sorry but Meredith is nice.

halcyondays · 16/06/2012 10:29

I prefer Betsy.

Staceisace · 16/06/2012 03:34

My vote would be with Scarlett and then Lettie for short when she's little.

Lannie33 · 16/06/2012 03:09

I like Scarlett but do agree that it's trendy/of the moment/not classic and may not date well.
I hate Betsy, but Elizabeth is beautiful and goes with Edgar the best.
Meredith is fine, don't love it or hate it. Goes with Edgar just fine.

idontcarewhodiditfirst · 15/06/2012 22:49

I have a grumpy Merry Grin.

Her full name is brilliant for telling offs. "ME-RE-DITH come here right now young lady!!"

Lots of people think she's a Mary though. But everyone who matters knows her real name.

ThePathanKhansWitch · 15/06/2012 22:39

Betsy, please it's just so sweet.

Rhubarbgarden · 15/06/2012 22:38

Meredith. I don't like the other two.

Edgar is fab, by the way. It was second on my list for ds.

Happilymarried155 · 15/06/2012 08:13

Love betsy!!!! :)

CheerfulYank · 15/06/2012 05:30

I say Elizabeth/Betsy. That way she'll have a host of nn to choose from later. :)

sashh · 15/06/2012 05:14

I love the name Meredith, but it does make me think of Meredith Kercher - I supose that is not a bad thing, the poor girl should be remembered but maybe not an association you want.

randomimposter · 15/06/2012 04:54

Betsy by a mile. Partic with Edgar.

EllenParsons · 15/06/2012 00:33

Meredith, and I don't think people would necessarily call her Merry. I wouldn't really shorten it I don't think.

breasticles · 14/06/2012 22:58

My DD 6yo is Betsy. Although she's got an alliterative surname so I frequently think of it as being a bit burlesque! And she loves her name. It suits her. Grin

Anotherdayanotherdestiny · 01/06/2012 19:21

I absolutely love Betsy and I also like Meredith but Scarlett is just horrible.

Buntingbunny · 01/06/2012 18:45

Meredith or Elizabeth with a different NN, i don't like Betsy .

I love Scarlet, but I associate it with a very cute tiny little girl and with a cute surname it might be a bit much.

kickingKcurlyC · 01/06/2012 18:19

Meredith is lovely BUT I don't think you can have Eddie and Edie!
So I'd choose Betsy.

GoPoldark · 31/05/2012 14:34

Betsan if Betsy

Meredith otherwise - though MUCH prefer Merryn

lovemygirlivy · 31/05/2012 14:31

I dislike Meredith. I love Betsy (you could always use Beatrice as a full name too). Scarlett is alright, but it is no where near as lovely/classic as Edgar.

MoonHare · 31/05/2012 13:48

Meredith is by far the nicest of your ideas. If you don't like the nn Merry then don't use it and ask others not to if you hear them doing it, people usually take the lead from parents. if she wants people to call her that as she gets older then that's up to her as the bearer of the name.

I disagree about it being a Madison type of name, I think that Scarlett is one of those names though.

I really don't like Betsy at all.

Meredith goes with Edgar far better than the other two names.

SLVC · 31/05/2012 12:13

I'm quite surprised Meredith is so popular, it's not to my tastes at all. I bracket it with Madison type names.. Love Edith, but perhaps you wouldn't want Edith and Edgar (which I love).

I think Elizabeth nn Betsy is fab. Choose that!

AllRiseForHerVaj · 31/05/2012 11:01

Betsy short for Elizabeth is lovely. Much nicer than others.

VeronicaSpeedwell · 31/05/2012 10:42

Another vote for Meredith!
