Elfie?

I heard it a few years ago as a customer of a company I worked for had named their child Elfie.

Is it too different? From googling I think variants are Elva and Elvie?

fatima i met a grown up Elfie today - very pretty name and really suited her so go for it :)

RetroMum1 · 04/06/2012 15:56

I know someone who has a little girl called Elfie, it's short for Elfrieda, I think it's really pretty.

Thumbwitch · 04/06/2012 12:05

Ok, found Elvira the Mistress of Darkness. Sure there's a witchy connection somewhere though...

Thumbwitch · 04/06/2012 12:02

You're right, Percy! Still don't like Vera though.

Righteousdude · 04/06/2012 12:00

Elfine

Righteousdude · 04/06/2012 12:00

There's a elfinein cold comfort farm. I always liked it although like another poster said it's unlikely any of my children will have elf like proportions so best left for others

PercyFilth · 04/06/2012 11:56

No, she was Endora (am old too Blush)

Thumbwitch · 04/06/2012 11:51

Elvira was Samantha's mother in Bewitched, wasn't she? but then you have to be as old as me to remember that. Grin
I really really don't like the name Vera so couldn't take that risk, but Elvie is nice.

jimswifein1964 · 04/06/2012 11:46

Grin Pedro & Gunther!!!!

FatimaLovesBread · 04/06/2012 11:36

Elfie must be a cool guinea pig! Mine are Pedro and Gunther Grin

thatlldopig is your guinea pig Turkish? Wink

PercyFilth · 04/06/2012 11:21

Any thoughts on Elvira? there's a fine line between the f and v sounds, so a feminine Elvira could be Elfie/Elvie. Otherwise Vera is a less girly nn, with a good meaning of its own = true.

FatimaLovesBread · 04/06/2012 10:22

Sorry, just came back to this. Has no idea the name Eflie could be such a heated topic Smile

Yes I was thinking of a girl. But tbh it's just an idea to add/cross of the list at this point. Looking at DH though, if we had a girl she'd probably be a Tom boy and not very elf like so maybe it wouldn't suit Grin
DH is half Irish which is why I looked at the Elvie alternative.
Not to keen on Elfrida but don't mind Elfine.

I like names that aren't too popular i.e. top 50/100 but aren't to made uppy. But I don't know if Elfie would fall in to the second category?

Thanks for your input and if it helps DH and I have no Turkish blood whatsoever so I don't this what CDA will be an issue

Elfine is nice HRH Reminds me of delphine, perhaps that could have elfie as a NN? fatima hope you are still reading? Grin

HRHQueenMaryAnnSingleton · 03/06/2012 12:35

btw Elfine is nice- from Cold Comfort Farm.

HRHQueenMaryAnnSingleton · 03/06/2012 12:30

CoteDAzur crikey you are a rude woman - get off your bleeding high horse.

thegreylady · 03/06/2012 10:23

Just to say that my dd-i-l and I have a wonderful relationship and I don't see how I am being stubborn!
I really know that this is not the place for a 'row like this but all I have ever said is that I know a Turkish man named Elfi-which I do. I don't know how he got his name-I do know that his family has been Turkish for as long as Turkey has been a nation.
I am leaving this thread now I never expected personal abuse on a baby name thread! I have told my lovely daughter in law what has been said and she has told me that I am right in what I have said and that CDA is just being silly.
I have always loved the baby names part of MN but to be honest this has spoiled the whole site for me. I will stick to the Tamoxifen thread in future.

AllRiseForHerVaj · 03/06/2012 09:05

I know an Elfie, nn for Elfrieda. She is about 90 Grin

ThatllDoPig · 03/06/2012 08:47

Our guinea pig is called Elfie.

Don't know if it would suit a human, elfie eating etc

CoteDAzur · 03/06/2012 08:45

TheGreyLady - I'm sorry it is taking this long to get my (simple) point across. I don't doubt that you know this man. What I am saying is that it is not a Turkish name. This is something i would know and you wouldn't. Please don't insist.

Apologies to others we are obviously boring to tears. I would not have banged on about this if TheGreyLady were not so incredibly stubborn. (Sympathies to your DIL, by the way)

Percy - I'm leaving this thread now but feel free to follow me around MN Smile

AThingInYourLife · 03/06/2012 00:38

Thanks CoteDAzur for your informative posts about Turkish names :)

Thumbwitch · 03/06/2012 00:10

OP, were you thinking of it for a girl then? seeing that most of the non-Turkish argument posters have heard of it as a girl's name?
I've only seen it as a boy's name so far. But things are odd here.

saffronwblue · 02/06/2012 23:58

I think Elfie would suit a little elfin girl. If she is a solid or tomboy type it might be harder to carry off, particularly in adult life.

PercyFilth · 02/06/2012 23:54

I'm just going to repeat what I said to CoteDAzur on this thread, where she was equally unpleasant. (It takes practice to be this nasty)

"You clearly have a very high opinion of yourself. I'm afraid I don't share it."

thegreylady · 02/06/2012 23:02

Flipping heck this is getting ridiculous. The man I know is Turkish-you found his son by Googling. He has no Jewish, French or other origin. He is an elderly TURKISH man. A devout Moslem born and bred in a small fishing village on the West coast of Turkey. The first of his five sons shares his name. Please just stop it CoteDAzur-leave it alone now.
