I wouldn't have given this name a second thought but overheard someone calling their daughter in the library today and it caught my attention.
My dh was with me at the time and it is the only girls name suggestion that he has responded to positively so far.
What do we think?

Dd1 is Jemima.

I don't think I could get past the Annika Rice barrier unfortunately :)

I love Astrid, it was on my list of girls names.

crunchbag · 30/05/2012 21:08

I like Astrid and think it goes well with Jemima. What about Annika, she is Pippi Longstocking's friend, written by Astrid Lindgren :)

JambalayaCodfishPie · 30/05/2012 21:04

Astrid was one of our choices. Smile

We went with Nancy in the end though.

Also really liked Adelaide, after watching Calamity Jane. Grin

tummytickler · 30/05/2012 21:01

ds is 9 and has an Astrid in his class, and nobody takes the mickey out of her name. To them it is a totally normal name.
I think it is lovely. I also think it might get more popular in the next few years. I like Ursula, Gretel and Ingrid too.

i really like it, this was one of our top choices when we were debating what to call dd, we didnt use it in the end, but if we every had another girl (unlikely!) then it would be a front runner! its lovely.

AndWhenYouGetThere · 30/05/2012 20:26

I don't want to be the one to mention it, but I will... I do like Astrid, but have discounted it from my own list, because the first syllable might be lead to some un-imaginative playground teasing.

smogwod · 30/05/2012 20:23

Love love love Astrid!

It's not the best with Jemima but certainly not the worst, and in any case she'll spend an awful lot longer being a tall, blond beautiful grown-up Astrid than she will being part of 'Jemima and Astrid' (hope that makes some kind of sense but not entirely sure Smile)

AThingInYourLife · 30/05/2012 20:14

I love Astrid, it's one of my very favourite names.

It goes fine with Jemima.

And it doesn't need a nickname, it's two syllables long.

WithACherryOnTop · 30/05/2012 20:10

Ruth is beautiful, and not at all harsh unlike Astrid.

emsyj · 30/05/2012 20:07

Love it - tis surely the beayoooootiful girl's name, and also the cool girl's name (if life were a movie, which it isn't I suppose).

I'm putting it on my list right now! I already have a Ruth and I've seen various people on here say it's harsh sounding so I must have a taste for that sort of name! Wink

I think it goes fine with Jemima - both pretty names, they don't clash IMO.

SpringHeeledJack · 30/05/2012 20:04

Ursula in German sounds gorgeous

the diminutive is Uschi

it's cute as fuck. Does lose something in english, tho Grin

SpringHeeledJack · 30/05/2012 20:03

love it

plus it sounds really cool

ellesabe · 30/05/2012 20:02

I have already suggested Saskia along with a zillion others to be told "no".

minipie · 30/05/2012 20:00

I quite like it but it is a bit hard. Also hard to find nns for. (Assy? Asti? Hmm)

Gretel is dreadful IMVHO, as is Ursula. Ingrid is nice though, and a bit easier on the nn front (Inga)

How about Saskia - more similar to Jemima but similarly Scandi/unusual?

CamperFan · 30/05/2012 19:56

My friend has an Astrid. I really like the name. But I don't think it goes with Jemima, which is very girly/more obviously feminine.

ellesabe · 30/05/2012 19:53
Grin Does Astrid go with Jemima though? They seem quite different to me.

WithACherryOnTop · 30/05/2012 19:53

Gretel is nicer, and not so harsh sounding.

YouFloatLikeAFeather · 30/05/2012 19:51

Ah well I also really like Gretel!

ellesabe · 30/05/2012 19:50

Oh wow! I'm really surprised by the positive response! Before I heard it today I too would have thought it very harsh-sounding (in the same category as Gretel maybe)...

YouFloatLikeAFeather · 30/05/2012 19:48

Love it. Also really like Ingrid and Ursula.

RillaBlythe · 30/05/2012 19:45

Love it.

tara0202 · 30/05/2012 19:43

I really like it. It's classy :-)

LittleWhiteWolf · 30/05/2012 19:43

If DS had been a girl he would have been Astrid or Magda, so yes its lovely. As I'm currently in a loved up, broody stage with aforementioned baby DS I haven't ruled it out yet for DC3 Grin
