[grin] The pharmacist asked today if my DDs name was "actually a real name"

Grin love it. BUT feel bad that I missed a great opportunity to say "did you mean that to sound as rude as it did?"

Fwiw, DDs name is a three letter nickname of an older name, so I though I might get a comment or two throughout her life, just today was the first (at 5mo)

He actually came over to look at her, asked "So, is that, like, a real name" so I replied "yes, but I suppose it is a nickname of a more 'real' name, which is my mother's name and seemed to 'old lady' on a baby", he then said "well, at least it'll make for cheaper football shirts, my brother is Abraham, my poor parents" and Grin ed.

Meg does sound like a real name.

Mog not so much.

CheerfulYank · 30/05/2012 15:39

Oh. No, we don't have Gemma's, at least we haven't, but that is about to change I think. Catherine Bell and Kristin Davis just had Gemmas. :) Lovely name, I think!

Frontpaw · 30/05/2012 14:52

Has she never heard of Meg Ryan?

RabidAnchovy · 30/05/2012 14:46

Can I just say was disappointed that her name was not Zog or Lop or something really weird. Meg is lovely (makes me think of little women)

Lunarlyte · 30/05/2012 14:26

Well, if Meg as a stand-alone name weirds out your pharmacist, I can only assume that s/he has led a very closed life.

Next time, fire back!

NeedlesCuties · 30/05/2012 13:37

Meg? Surely that is perfectly normal name? Surprised he hadn't heard it, and even more surprised he had the cheek to ask you about it.

However, people are very strange.... Years ago as a student I worked in a shop and had a badge that said, "Trainee" as it was only about my 3rd week in the job. I had a customer ask me if that was my name Confused Hmm

GnocchiNineDoors · 30/05/2012 09:26

Oh, and he was British.

Not a Catherine, I'm a Gemma.

The Americans I met thought it was pronounced with a G like Gold rather than like Giraffe Grin and that it was short for something.

I know, MmeBucket if I'd known I was going to get Hmm over Meg i'd have gone with Tararabumdiey like I wanted.

When I read the title, I was expecting some name like Hat or Toast or Zzrmqp. What an odd question about a perfectly reasonable name.

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 30/05/2012 02:20

Is he from overseas? It's the only way I can conceive of someone asking if it's a real name? How odd!

IAmBooybilee · 30/05/2012 00:36

how did he not know it was a real name? hasn't he ever read meg and mog? Confused

CheerfulYank · 30/05/2012 00:30

Meg is a very real name. I've had it for thirty years now! :) I'm a Megan really.

Oooh, what's your name? I'm American and I'll tell you if we have it or not. :o

StepOutOfSpring · 30/05/2012 00:10

Ooh, I guess you're a.... Catherine.

GnocchiNineDoors · 29/05/2012 21:37

Hahaha, go on, have a guess. Lightening never strikes twice.

see now, I want to know what your name is. But I wont guess, incase I am correct again. and you think I am some mad stalker!

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 29/05/2012 21:35

ooh, I must be psychic psychotic Grin

My friends daughter is Megan and she is known as Meg. Love it. we call her meggie peg.

Dont see anything remotely 'out there' with that name.

GnocchiNineDoors · 29/05/2012 21:35

I was also asked by an American what my (very complete and never ever short for anything) name was short for. In all fairness, it's a name they obviously mustn't have in the US, but it did make me chuckle.

When dd was a tiny baby I was asked if her name was made up.

She is called Eliza Hmm

And the Dr receptionist keeps calling her Elisha. So bloody annoying.

Meg is a lovely name. I very nearly called dd1 Megan.

i know a Meg. am a bit bemused as to why anyone would think it wasn't a real name Confused

GnocchiNineDoors · 29/05/2012 21:24

Shock that's brilliant, and very brave.

Tbh, I would be tempted to do that just for the reactions.

I like Meg.

But I just called my baby Shirley, which makes everyone do the fixed smile/grimace thing when you tell them Grin

GnocchiNineDoors · 29/05/2012 21:06

Grin DD gets Peggy too, from one relative. I would have gone with Maggie, but it's what my DMum is known as, and thought it would be weird.

They actually had her on their system as Megan, which was rather presumptuous.

I did call DD Pheobe for the first week (our cat's name) Blush
