HELP! My DH thinks he is naming a dog / video game character!

Am I crazy for giving the veto to almost all of my DH's baby boy name suggestions? My DH thinks he is naming a dog / video game character! How do I get him to pick some "proper" boys names? Do I just hope that he falls in love with something off my list?

Here is his list:
#1 Maximus (max is my aunts dog)
#2 Hawk (from hawkeye on the avengers)
#3 Hunter (our friends dogs name)
#4 Shadow (my old cats name)
#5 Lukas aka Luke (as in skywalker)
#6 Markus (not sue where this came from, but not bad)

Here is my list:
#1 Alexander aka Alex (vetoed by dh)
#2 Elliott (DH is unsure about this one)
#3 Arthur (DH doesn't mind)
#4 Cole ( this one jums off and on my list depending on the week - Dh didn't comment so I'm thinking this one is coming off)
#5 Jasper (DH doesn't mind)
#6 Simon (DH isn't keen)
#7 Grayson (DH doesn't mind)

I should probably mention that my DH is a childrens coach, and that many of the names I came up with he said no way, because of some brat kid that he could remember.

Thank you for your input!

I love Maximus. Lukas is OK. His other names are bonkers.

Your more traditional names are lovely - Alexander, Arthur - but it is unlikely they will appeal to your DP>

Cole and Grayson are utterly vike, sorry.

You are going to have look at quirky names that aren't totally, totally stupid (Hawk?), I feel. Hipster/trednster names?

Arlo
Dashiell
Orson
Heath
Silas
Otis
Hugo
Asher
Atticus
Rudy
Sonny
Kingston
Roman

I hear shadow, I think sheepdog

Paperclips · 31/05/2012 10:41

Shadow, LOL.

We have been joking that we might call a boy "Danger" . The danger is that the joke might stick!

My DH is a Geek , whoops I mean gamer, sci-fi fan, and graphic novel fan. He suggests a few crazy ones but not really seriously. Thankfully he's sticking with fairly conventional names.

Beeblebear · 30/05/2012 21:47

Jasper is also the name of one of my aunts past dogs, but not an aunt that we see more than once ever 2-3 years, so not bothered.

Jasper is the name of my great aunts dog, so would not be one of my choices.
I love love love Marcus and Lucas.

I hate the name Grayson - sorry Blush

lisaro · 30/05/2012 15:52

Lucas and Marcus are fine. From your list Cole and Grayson are truly awful.

openerofjars · 30/05/2012 14:46

A Norse trickster god, I believe.

Littlecherublegs · 30/05/2012 14:43

Of those listed, I like Lucas, Marcus, Max, Simon and Cole.

Grayson is ok, do like the nn Gray.

Things like Shadow and Hawk are just a no no!!

newtonupontheheath · 30/05/2012 12:10

openerofjars I know somebody who named their baby Loki quiet recently..... I'm led to believe its a Greek god?!

englishmummyinwales · 30/05/2012 10:30

Hello, I have a Lukas and we thought we would shorten it to Luke, but we haven't and it is just him. I have Scandinavian roots and really like all those Germanic/Scandi 'k' inclusions! To me, Lucas is a surname, not a first name, although everyone inevitably tries to spell it like that.

I like Jasper best from your list - your husband's first four suggestions are not worthy of comment!!

PandaNot · 29/05/2012 22:15

DH informs me that Marcus is also from a video game, just in case you don't want any gaming connotations.

difficultpickle · 29/05/2012 22:03

Call him Simon Grayson and see if you can get free Huddersfield season tickets!

openerofjars · 29/05/2012 22:00

Some bugger gave DH a dictionary of mythology for Xmas one year.

TheHouseOnTheCorner · 29/05/2012 21:11

I have always loved Hunter.

GnocchiNineDoors · 29/05/2012 21:07

Blush I call my DD Megatron as a nickname. She gets a ton of NNs though.

scottishmummy · 29/05/2012 21:01

what a plethora of ghastly names
megatron sounds like a particle ray

signet2012 · 29/05/2012 20:44

My DP wanted to call the baby megatron Grin thankfully we are having a girl Grin

scottishmummy · 29/05/2012 20:21

its a whole new nerdy world of games the geek husbands exist in

openerofjars · 29/05/2012 20:02

I feel your pain. DH is a gamer and into shite superhero films.

So far I have had to veto:

Kal El
Jean-Luc
Thor
Loki
Anders

and

Morrigan
Morgana
Xenia
Lila

on the grounds of him being a massive nerd-boy.

I quite like Anders and Lila but I'm not having a child named after a computer game or cartoon character.

Beeblebear · 29/05/2012 20:00

Ooh, one of the ladies at work just dropped off a baby name book. I'll give that to DH and cross out any of the too-bizarre names for inspiration!

There's a character called Shadow in Neil Gaiman book. He's an ex-con. Just sayin'. Grin

fi51 · 29/05/2012 09:51

Elliot is sweet and a name you can grow up with not like shadow or hunter

BoffinMum · 28/05/2012 23:04

DS1 has raved about being called Hunter. "Who would not want to be called Hunter?" he cried. He suggests Hawk-Hunter for added effect.

Suffice it to say he is a gamer. Wink

mathanxiety · 28/05/2012 21:29

I like the suggestions of Axel and Alec.

Strangely enough I like Lukas spelled with a K., and I think Kaspar with a K is nice too. I prefer Marc to Markus/Marcus.
Cole and Elliott are really nice from your list, imo, and Jasper is not too bad. I don't really like Grayson, Arthur, Alex. Simon is nice but it's a long way from your DH's preferences. Solomon would be my alternative suggestion. Agree with everyone who thinks the first four on your H's list are dreadful.

How about
Dexter
Felix
Lennox
Pax
Xander
Xavier
Jackson
Dominic
Nicholas/ Nico
Oskar
Jacob or Jakob
Zachary (Zak)
Isaac
