Theodore...which nickname?

Considering Theodore but torn between Theo or Teddy as the "everyday" name! What do you think? I love them both but with Theo being so popular is Teddy a better alternative?

Yes. I know this is a Zombie thread... but....!

We have a Theodore. Also referred to as Theodor-able (but not in front of anyone as he is in Y7 and that would not be cool at all!)

He is called Teddy by everyone. Occasionally Ted.

Great name. No one else in school called Ted or Teddy and only 1 Theo so far and he is in Year 5. So not as popular around these parts (SW London / Surrey) as threads like this sometimes suggest.

PetraRabbit · 27/02/2020 22:44

Surprised to see people think Theo is more common than Teddy. I know about 5 small Teddies and it seems to be a huge trend at the moment.

bluemoon2468 · 27/02/2020 15:35

DH and I both love this name but we've had to take it off our list because I love Teddy/Ted (and he doesn't) and he loves Theo (and I don't) 😔

Theo at a push, but they're both so popular I would avoid. Too try-hard. The middle class version of "Alfie".

Astronica · 27/02/2020 07:08

I like all the nicknames but would choose Teddy as it's less used than Theo, and love Ted as well, especially as he gets older. I know a young Theodore who goes by Theo mostly but also gets called his full name and gets affectionately called Teddy sometimes as well in the family.

Jossina · 27/02/2020 04:18

You could also go with Teo and being a bit more original, especially as both Theo and Teddy are quite popular in some areas.

Omashu · 27/02/2020 01:19

@Grufallosfriends I know this is a zombie thread but you’re wrong! Look into the history of the teddy bear and you’ll see the connection to Theodore. The teddy bear was named after Theodore Roosevelt.

Grufallosfriends · 26/02/2020 23:02

Theo is the natural shortening for Theodore.

Teddy is a toy 🐻 and bears no resemblance to Theodore!

DoctorBambino · 26/02/2020 22:57

Ted is my top boys name (just Ted no longer version). But as a nickname for Theodore I would choose Theo, I think Teddy is quickly becoming as popular.

Hbee90 · 26/02/2020 22:52

It’s a nickname for both but actually it’s a nickname for Theodore and Edward came much later afterwards

Hbee90 · 26/02/2020 22:51

Teddy was actually a name after Theodore - the toy Teddy came afterwards

williamjacksmum · 28/05/2013 22:01

Forgive me but isn't Ted/Teddy short/nn for Edward? Not sure I would associate it at all with Theodore?

Theodore and Theo are both adorable though and I'd go for them!

Lebkuchenlover · 28/05/2013 21:58

This thread is over a year old!! I'm sure the op has decided by now...

Turniptwirl · 28/05/2013 21:03

Teddy while he's little then see what he likes when he's older

SnakesRule · 28/05/2013 16:33

We have Theodore , he is an official Teddy with close friends/family but from about the age of 7-8 he decided that Teddy is childish and started calling himself Theo in new situations (i.e. when he moved school at 9 he wanted to be known as Theo).
As much as I like Theo, DS is a Teddy for me :)

forevergreek · 29/05/2012 21:43

From a German/ European perspective I would pronounce Theodore as 'Tayo- dor', so nn tayo

emmyloo2 · 29/05/2012 06:43

Love Theodore and would choose Teddy as nn for baby and little boy. I suspect they will be Theo as they are older though, which is also lovely. Although I prefer Ted or Teddy.

5madthings · 28/05/2012 22:51

i know of two toddler theos, its really not that popular tho may be more so in some parts of the uk, but obviously not in Ireland, so your Theo can be the trailblaizer for the name as mine was Grin i actually had someone ask me when ds1 was about 6, if they minded if we used the name theo!! i was like NO not at all :)

DottieRose · 28/05/2012 22:45

I'm in Ireland and have never met a Theodore/Theo! I don't think it is particularly popular here which is good for me! Though I'm sure it will trickle over eventually!

it does mean gift from god yes :) its a great name :) my ds1 is 12 and the only one of two theos at his high school (there are 250 kids in each yr so its a big school!) it is more popular now but not overly so, its a great name for a child and an adult i think and re nicknames once baby arrives you will find which suits :)

DottieRose · 28/05/2012 22:07

5madthings and Anonymumous you are after really really selling me on the name Smile and the fact that it means (correct me if I'm wrong) gift from God is super sweet!!! I can't believe that I am finally settled on a boys name!! Just which nickname....I still don't know!

Grin

op its a fab name and whichever nickname you go with will be fine, we used teddy and theo and settled on theo by the time he was a toddler, along with theodorable which is the BEST baby nickname ever, and go google the trio advert so you can practise singing the theooo song!! its great Grin

when i go up to bed this evening i shall have to go in and quietly sing the theo song to my theo!

Anonymumous · 28/05/2012 21:19

I'm sure his full name is wonderfully impressive, since you clearly have such impeccable skill in choosing names, nicknames and lyrics!
