There used to be a collie on Blue Peter called Mabel,Stace.That may be why.

It was the top of our list until on a dog walk we came across a couple screaming the name at dog that kept running away. DP and I just looked at each other and said "so.....more girls names?!"

Why is Mabel making me think of a border collie!?

I don't know of any little Mabels but there's a chance she'd adopt Belle or Bella as a nickname - I don't know if that would bother you though...

That doesn't make me like it. In any case, I have heard it pronounced both as Eth-an and Ee-than. Either way, it sounds a bit chemical to me - as does Ethel.

There, you see, I heartily dislike Ethel. Mabel and Ethel may both be 'old lady' names, but for me Mabel sounds pretty and Ethel is ugly - sounds leathery like an old boot or tough gristly meat! I really dislike the -eth sound though (Beth, Ethan, Seth, ll those names) - rhymes with death :(

Yes, I was thinking Blue Peter pet too. I like Ethel, I had an aunt called that who was always known as Ettie, which I think is lovely.

Hate it, and, like the poster above, I laughed when I heard of a newborn being called this (not in front of the mum obviously!).

But I am 40 and the mums I know who are calling their kids this are in their 30s. I think it doesn't have the same connotations to younger mums.

I love the name, DP and I liked it for our DD. Even though my Mum phoned me up and begged me not to use it we STILL really liked it.

However.

We said it out loud.

I have an Estuary accent, DPs is Yorkshire. It sounds really dreadful in both. DD is called something else :) It's something to do with the "le" sound I think.

I like it. Yes, it is an "old granny" name, but prettier than most, and infinitely nicer than popular non-names like Tilly.

I LOVE IT. my dd has it as a middle name after my gran. Wish I had used it as her first names but I did not have the guts after all the negative comments I had before she was born.

But DH ruled it out and hated it. I wanted Mabel last time but baby had a willy so it was a no.
