Love the name Thalia so much. But surname is Taylor. Is Thalia Taylor too ridiculous?

How about Eloise Taylor?

SodoffBaldrick · 24/05/2012 08:10

I think Thalia Taylor (pronounced the Greek way) sounds fabulous and also like alliterative names, BUT would possibly be wary of TT.

ComposHat · 24/05/2012 03:02

Yeah avoid TT at all costs. It is a playground tease waiting to happen.

Not as bad as a friend of grandfather who was a WC Taylor. He was known by everyone including us kids as Shitehouse Taylor. Imagine 70 years of that!

5madthings · 23/05/2012 14:33

toomuchtooyoung the Thalia i know had a greek dad and they pronounced it with the Th, as in Theo, as i said we have a Theo so couldnt have a Thalia as well, its a lovely name :)

toomuchtooyoung · 23/05/2012 14:22

I am Greek and know a Thalia. It is pronounced with the th, so as in Theo. Makes a completely different sound than Taylor.

It is the Greek muse for comedy, literature, poetry and I've seen it as the names for theatres and bookshops in Europe, and wierdly a deli in NY.

You'll always get some people who can't pronounce it, or can't be bothered to try, but it's a beautiful name. Use it if you love it!

mimbleandlittlemy · 23/05/2012 13:37

As it's a Greek name (she was one of the nine Muses), it should be pronouced with the Th as in Theo, the only problem with that being our receptionist at work sends me messages when a friend of mine rings which say "Failure called." Grin Apart from that I think it's a lovely name and if you pronounce it with the soft Th then it goes rather nicely with Taylor I think.

rockinhippy · 23/05/2012 11:32

Yes Psamm :) - thats it :)

& I've also remembered where I've got the shoe thing from - Thalia is also the name of a US Trendy surf wear company & they specialise in trendy sports shoes -

No double Ts please :(- I really do think as said above thats just asking for trouble - they do end up being NN Titty - seen that happen amongst DDs friends

I love the name Thalia, was on shortlist for DD2. And I usually like alliterative first/surnames but I'm afraid I agree with the others that it just doesn't really scan.

It's gutting to give up a name becasue of awkward surname issues, I know because we've had to do this too.

DD2 is Tabitha.

Tabitha Taylor works I think.

Good luck with your decision x

TheCatInTheHairnet · 22/05/2012 15:30

If it's pronounced Tah-lee-ah, I think it sounds great!

5madthings · 22/05/2012 15:29

i knew a Thalia and they pronounced it with the Th sound so Tha lee ah is that makes sense i always liked it but we have a Theo and so couldnt have a daughter called Thalia as well!

It's TAH-lee-ah

LadyWellian · 22/05/2012 15:21

I'm guessing the Th is pronounced as in Thailand, in which case I think it's probably a bit too similar sounding to the surname - like Tyler Taylor or even Taylor Taylor.

And that's on the assumption that the 'a' is pronounced 'ah' - if it's pronounced 'ay' then I'd say it's a definite no-no.

Psammead · 22/05/2012 15:13

Does it look like this?

rockinhippy · 22/05/2012 15:08

Confused you know I'm just not sure Psamm I get a mental image of Thalia as a shop name over a window, quite funky looking, but I've a foggy head ATM & just can't quite remember it clearly, think I've seen it a lot though, so suspect its a chain, rather than independent, which wouldn't matter

Psammead · 22/05/2012 14:43

Rockinhippy - are you thinking of the book store?

MarySA · 22/05/2012 14:41

It sounds a bit tongue twister like together. And probably not Elizabeth Taylor either. Elsie, Eleanor?

mumnosbest · 22/05/2012 13:46

or Elsie

mumnosbest · 22/05/2012 13:46

Thalia Taylor is not quite right. I know a girl from school who had initials TT, the boys all called her 'Titty'
How about Eliza/Elisa, Elise or Elliss if you like Elizabeth?

SoupDragon · 22/05/2012 13:40

How are you pronouncing Thalia?

I've tried it several ways and I"m afraid it sounds ridiculous to me.

washngo · 22/05/2012 13:33

Ok so consensus is it's a bit odd then? Another name I love is Elizabeth but that's been ruled out for surname reasons too.

Not sure about Thalia Taylor but Tally Taylor is a definite no. That said, I know someone whose married (nick)name is very similar to that (think I instead of an A) and it seems to work for her.
