Trying to decide on name for DC2 due in October. Surname is Fox. What do you think of Jacob Edward?

I think it's lovelySmile

Grace20 · 22/05/2012 21:51

I thought Jedward - but in 3/5 years time by the time he's grown up and in nursery/school, will people be thinking this, it connecting the names to Twilight? And how many of them will care enough about some film their parents liked a few years ago? I personally think if you like the names go for it:)
However, personally I love Oliver Lucas inspiration for my hypothetical ds

MoonHare · 22/05/2012 18:16

I have never read or seen any of the Twighlight films/books so the two names together don't carry those connotations to me. There will be lots like me too I imagine (though I am pushing 40 so not exactly 'down' with the kids). But don't let it put you off if you really love the combination, I doubt the franchise's popularity will hold out through your son's lifetime!

But as the names go I prefer Edward over Jacob by a long way.

Could you keep the Edward and come up with alternative middle names if you are bothered by the Twighlight connection?

Of the other names you've mentioned I like Lucas and Oliver (though this is so common at the moment). Not keen on Caleb, sounds a bit Emmerdale Dingle family to me (not that I watch that either!).

Other biblical names; Joseph, Reuben, Adam.

Love the name Noah by the way!

Allthesanityinme · 22/05/2012 17:15

I agree with others who have said that Jacob and Edward are fine on their own, its just together that it reminds me of twilight.

thegreylady · 22/05/2012 14:32

A bit too easy to make Jedward although I love both Jacob ans Edward :-)

Positiveplus · 22/05/2012 12:09

I know of a 2 month old Jacob Daniel which I think is lovely!

I wouldnt let something like Twilight change your mind on a name - your son will be around longer than the hype around the Twilight books / films will.

Of the others you list:
Oliver - not keen and way too popular
Lucas - nice enough
Caleb - like
Joel - love!

babyblabber · 22/05/2012 11:52

Our DS is Noah too and although Jacob is the only name we both agreed we liked, we've ruled it out. Just think it's too much of a biblical/old testament theme or something and having tested it on a few people, that's the general reaction.

Have agreed though if we are lucky enough to have 3 and the 3rd is a boy he will be Jacob coz then it'll be Noah, X and Jacob.

I don't think anyone means to suggest that either Jacob or Edward is an unusable name because of Twilight.

However, Jacob Edward is probably unusable because of Twilight (i.e. because they are two of the main characters in a very well-known franchise).

Really liking the suggestion of Caleb.

Herrena · 22/05/2012 09:27

Yes, that's what I meant; Jacob and Edward together might be out but individually they are both perfectly fine names.

Jacob Elliot has a nice ring to it :)

AFox · 21/05/2012 22:14

Jacob Elliot

But perhaps I'll avoid Jacob Edward as two twilight linked names might be pushing it.

I know lots of Jacobs and not aware that any have had a Twilight issue. Go for it if you like it!

AFox · 21/05/2012 22:12

DS1 is Noah, I think it goes nicely with Jacob. Jacob is still top of the list for me atm. Caleb, Oliver, Lucas and Joel are also in the list.

Doh - *he has not suffered

Ariel - agree completely. DS was friend with a Lara at nursery. We never made the link to Ms Croft!!

maclover · 21/05/2012 22:07

We have a Jacob and have never had any one mention Twilight to us (have never watched or read either) and has certainly not suffered from any mockery. We love the name and it suits DS. If you love the name, go with it - you will know that you made the choice because you liked it, rather than because of some spurious link to a passing trend.

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 21/05/2012 22:05

I like Jacob. If none of us ever named our children because of characters in books and films, there wouldn't be many names left would there? I love the name Lara but have been told Lara is out because of bloody Lara bloody Croft Hmm

Allthesanityinme · 21/05/2012 22:03

Caleb Edward is a lovely name

Allthesanityinme · 21/05/2012 22:01

Saw it and immediately thought twilight even though I haven't seen/read it

AFox · 21/05/2012 22:00

How about Caleb as a first name?

OP posts:
AFox · 21/05/2012 21:59

Why do all the good names get ruined?

OP posts:
Herrena · 21/05/2012 21:57

Yes, Bella in Twilight wanted to call her little (hypothetical) boy Edward Jacob (thus ruining those names for the rest of us).

Add in the fact that Jacob is also a 'Wolf' and you'd be setting your DS up for a life of mockery - please don't!

AFox · 21/05/2012 21:57

Any alternative names to go with Jacob (Quite keen on Jacob atm)

AFox · 21/05/2012 21:56

Thanks RoolbosWithMilk
I thought initials of Jef would be quite cute as an alternative nn

fluffywhitekittens · 21/05/2012 21:56

I like them both and would have used them both but didn't, mainly because of the Twilight connection. Although only one person actually commented about that when I told people it was an option.
I think if you really like them both then use them :)
