Need to whittle down our list!

I'm really hoping you'll be able to help us whittle down our shortlist for DC2 as we're only 3 weeks away from the EDD and choosing a name is become something of a conversation killer, generally leading to 'disagreement'. For this reason some impartial thoughts would be much appreciated.

I'm originally from Cornwall and DH is half French. Ideally we'd like to try and incorporate as much of this DC's heritage in the name but that probably won't be possible as we don't actually like many French names!

So far we've got a list of names we both agree on - what are you thoughts? Middle name will be Alexander after DH's late father if a DS and Merryn if a DD.

Ivan
Jacoby
Denzel
Gabriel
Ivo
Gus
Stan
Aloysius (okay, maybe not Blush)

Ines
Aurora
Romy
Serena
Thea
Isis
Zia

Ivan - like
Jacoby - is this a typo for Jacob?
Denzel - not keen
Gabriel - bit girly for me
Ivo - bit too trendy for me
Gus - as in Honeybun? could grow on me
Stan - like Stanley
Aloysius (okay, maybe not ) - hmm

Ines - like
Aurora - OK
Romy - no
Serena - like
Thea - like a lot
Isis - no
Zia - no

SilkStalkings · 20/05/2012 20:14

Do you know any Romany people or have relations? Or have you watched My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding?Grin One to research, that's all...

PrettyInDecadence · 19/05/2012 11:18

Romany is lovely, definitely going on the list!

cookiesnap · 19/05/2012 08:08

Denzel is a truly brilliant name! Like Ivan too.

I love the name Merryn and would have that as a first name. Also like Serena and Thea. Romy Merryn doesn't flow very well. I knew a Romany, which is pretty.

PrettyInDecadence · 18/05/2012 22:30

We're not too keen on Romilly as a full name, do you think Romy sounds alright as a stand alone name? If not is there anything else it could be short for?

CarriMarie · 18/05/2012 22:23

Definitely like Gabriel best for a boy, if not Jacob or maybe Stanley.

For a girl I like Serena, or Romy (Romilly ?).

Lunarlyte · 18/05/2012 21:22

Defo Gabriel for a boy. I would have that if we ever have a son (we have 2 girls). Funnily enough, DD2 would have been Gabriel Alexander or Gabriel James had she been a boy.

Aurora or Serena for a girl.

Best of luck for the birth!

MarySA · 18/05/2012 18:03

Ivan of the boys names is OK. Not keen on any of the others. Stan is simply dreadful so is Aloysius also Denzil is dreadful.Don't much like Ines. Of the girls names don't love any of them but none are terrible.

WithACherryOnTop · 18/05/2012 17:58

Love Ivan.Fantastic name.
Don't like Jacoby.
Denzel is terrible.
Gabriel is lovely.
Ivo is ok.
Gus is cute.
Stan is dreadful.
No to Aloysius.

Hate Ines.
Aurora is ok.
Romy is ok.
Don't like Serena.
Love,love Thea.
Not fond of Isis.
Don't like Zia.

PrettyInDecadence · 18/05/2012 17:43

Just noticed that Ivan The Terrible has come up a few times - hadn't thought of that connotation!

OP posts:
LiteraryMermaid · 18/05/2012 15:16

Ivan - 'The Terrible' (sorry!) Sounds very 'strong' to me - fine on an adult, but somehow can't see it on a child.
Jacoby - no -
Denzel - brings to mind a scarecrow (Worzel!)
Gabriel - love - fairly popular, but no overly so
Ivo -
Gus - would go with August/Augustus. Not really my style though.
Stan - Stanley is OK. Seems to be on t
Aloysius - inextricably linked to teddy bears, I'm afraid!

Ines - nice - sweet and sophisticated
Aurora - a bit frilly/princessy
Romy - no
Serena - OK
Thea - nice
Isis - no
Zia - possibly. Sounds vaguely exotic.

So that leaves Gabriel, possibly Stan/Gus, Ines and Thea for me.

PrettyInDecadence · 18/05/2012 14:26

Surname doesn't begin with a vowel, it's one syllable beginning with 'W'.

Interesting point Silk, think I'll look into Breton names :)

OP posts:
SilkStalkings · 18/05/2012 14:15

Have you thought of looking up Breton names since Cornwall and Brittany are very connected. The only one I can think of is Kerouac for a boy.
Or Yves for a boy a la St.IvesGrin or St.Michael/Michel.

AThingInYourLife · 18/05/2012 14:08

:o @ Gus being gussety :o

peachypips · 18/05/2012 13:54

Jacoby and romy. Love them!

EdithWeston · 18/05/2012 13:42

Ivan - ok (but not if your surname begins with a vowel)
Jacoby - ok-ish
Denzel - don't like, sorry
Gabriel -don't like much
Ivo - lovely
Gus - fine, but prefer as nn
Stan - like, but prefer as nn
Aloysius - lovely

Ines - lovely, but you might find yourself correcting pronunciation a lot. Would that bother you?
Aurora - OK
Romy - OK
Serena - like
Thea - like
Isis - lovely
Zia - don't like, sorry

BringBack1996 · 18/05/2012 13:37

I really like Gabriel, Stan, Gus, Serena and Ines. The rest are a bit out there for me!

PrettyInDecadence · 18/05/2012 09:03

Lesson learnt about Aloysius :o

With a few of the names we'll probably end up throwing another middle name in to help the whole name flow better.

I love Ines and Isis and like Serena and Thea.

HolyCameraConfusionBatman · 17/05/2012 23:14

Ivan - sweet
Jacoby - no. Jacob is lovely. I've only ever known Jacoby to be a girls name.
Denzel - no.
Gabriel - nice

Stan - too popular
Aloysius (okay, maybe not ) - no

Ines - ok
Aurora - no
Romy - ok
Serena -ok
Thea - no
Isis- no

Love Ivan, Ivo and Gabriel. Also Romy, Aurora and Thea.

Instead of Aloysius, how about Alois?
