i have an 18 month old names Avelyn Rouge (Avelyn is pronounced like the "ave" in shave and Linn...if that makes sense?? the original spelling is Eibhlinn)
We are expecting number 2 and are thinking either

Elidh (pronounced EyeLee) but would change the spelling i think.
Emerald is the other name we have.

My husband is Irish hence all the irish names, but our children will grow up in Australia, which is why we are changing the spelling.

I wanted to run it past a few people, and not people i know! what do you think?

My neighbour is Elidh and its taken me ages to get used to how to say it.
I like Emerald. Particularly if she has green eyes.

telsa · 14/05/2012 16:57

I love Emerald - it is the name I'll never get to use.

minipie · 14/05/2012 17:05

Avelyn is lovely

Eyelee is a lovely sound, how would you spell it?

Not so keen on Emerald, it's a bit "showgirl" for me...

squoosh · 14/05/2012 17:08

Do you have to change the spelling? Really?

Please don't.

bronze · 14/05/2012 17:09

I wouldn't change the spelling so would go with emerald

doormat · 14/05/2012 17:13

emerald is nice but if you are going to live in victoria..there is a place called emerald...they may refer it as a chavvy place of conception lolGrin

Firawla · 14/05/2012 17:22

I think Elidh goes better with your other dd maybe you could spell it Eiley, Isly (like isla..), Aylie or would people say that like hayley with the h..? not sure.
you could just simplify the spelling into eli but then it looks like ee-lye the boys name

so maybe emerald would be simpler but elidh is nice if you manage to find a spelling that works for you

Journey · 14/05/2012 17:39

I prefer Isla, Islay or Eilidh to Elidh. I think the second syllable softens the "eye" in these names compared the "lee" in your choice of Elidh, where I strongly hear the Scottish slang of aye!

Saying that Avelyn is a strong sounding name so perhaps the Avelyn and Elidh go well together. Personally I prefer softer sounding girls' names.

Lexiesgirl · 14/05/2012 18:57

Neve (Naimh) or Effie (Aoife, I think it's spelt?) are both lovely Irish names?

Agree with the others that Eilidh is a lovely sound but I'm not sure if there is a way of spelling it that doesn't just sound like you've put together some random letters Grin

FullBeam · 14/05/2012 19:05

What about Maeve or Fionnuala? Lovely Irish names which might not need to have their spellings changed.

gingerchick · 14/05/2012 19:07

The name is Niamh pron Neev

picnicbasketcase · 14/05/2012 19:08

Is Aoife spronounced Effie? I thought it was like Eefa

gingerchick · 14/05/2012 19:08

And Aoife is pron eefa

PercyFilth · 14/05/2012 19:59

My nan was Eileen known as Eily, is that any use?

Assuming Emerald is referring to the 'Emerald Isle' (or perhaps I'm really wrong) anyway, could you use Erin?
