Opinions on Bastian?

Hi everyone,

We're due in a few weeks and whilst we have a potential girls name sorted, we're really struggling with boys names.

My DP suggested Bastian yesterday and I quite like it. I believe it is ok to use it in it's own right rather than being short for Sebastian - which oddly enough I don't like at all.

My questions are:

Do you think it would be weird to use Bastian as the full name (maybe Bas as a nn?)
What do you think of it as a choice in general?
And, are there any middle names you think would go well with it?

Can't wait to hear what you think, good or bad!

x

My first thought was The Neverending Story as well.

Ramekin · 21/05/2012 16:29

Oops Blush didn't mean to highlight that.

Ramekin · 21/05/2012 16:28

I really, really like it. In fact when I was little and had just read the Neverending Story then I wanted to call any future son Bastian. I don't particularly like Sebastian though.

DD has a friend called Bastian (Basti). In fact we know three (we do live in Germany though)

Lunarlyte · 20/05/2012 22:01

Hmm, I'm not keen. Makes me think 'bastard' too much. How come you like this but don't like Sebastian?

Gdansk · 20/05/2012 21:52

Short for Sebastian - fine. Reminds me of Neverending Story.

dementedma · 20/05/2012 19:45

against the grain but I love it. I think it's cool!
Love Sebastian too, and:
Simon
Laurence
Angus
Benedict

Do you live with me? Only sometimes we call him Pig Mounter, or Pig-Getter-Upper too. Grin

RockinD · 19/05/2012 20:33

makes me think of Bastian Schweinsteiger the footballer, known as the Pig F*cker in our house. Well, why else would you climb (steig) on a pig?

What about Stillian - very old Bulgarian name - I love it!

smother, 'And Bas... hmm, isn't this what blokes call their, erm, you know...'

Is it? I've never heard that.

I don't mind Bastian at all . I might spell it Bastien though; not sure why, just think it looks nicer.

rachel234 · 15/05/2012 10:21

I agree about the Basty part not sounding great in English. But I'm surprised people don't hear it in SeBastian. Both names are quite common in Germany and Sebastian is often shortened to Bastie or Bastl/Wastl (ok the latter only in Bavaria Smile).

HolyCameraConfusionBatman · 14/05/2012 23:22

Bubba It's bringing a tear to my eye thinking about it

HolyCameraConfusionBatman · 14/05/2012 23:20

The Neverending story has a lot of lovely names to offer us. How about;

Bastian's middle name is Balthazar
Atreyu
Falkor
Carl Conrad
Engywook
Urgl (this is for a girl)
Morla (also sounds a bit girly)
Gluckuk
Whooshwoozool
Pyornkrachzark
Artax

Bubbaluv · 14/05/2012 23:16

HolyCamera "Bastian, SAY MY NAME!!!!!"

Bubbaluv · 14/05/2012 23:15

I just think of The Never Ending Story. Not that that is a bad thing!
Pretty good actually!

Thumbwitch · 14/05/2012 23:12

Ghenghis! Shock - that's a dog's name on EE, isn't it? as well as the obvious Leader of the Mongol Hordes, that is. Nooooo!

What about Boris? Wink

BaronessBomburst · 14/05/2012 23:09

Wilrik? I wanted this for DS but DH wouldn't let me. :( It's Frisian. Could be converted to Wil, Rick or Ricky. Unusual but not too mad.

HolyCameraConfusionBatman · 14/05/2012 23:04

I love Bastian. That's the name of the little boy in Neverending Story and I used to love the bit when the childlike empress is screaming out at the end 'BAAAASTIAN, help me BAAASTIAN'.

I would use Sebastian though and have Bastian as a nn.

CrackersandCheese · 14/05/2012 22:56

Thanks for the name suggestions. I'm afraid we'll have to keep looking I think.

And thanks to those who were not rude in their responses and those that went against the grain. Wink

Ok, I'm going to go against the flow, but I love the name Bastian - I know a couple and they are both super-cool. But then they are both Germans.

mirry2 · 14/05/2012 19:07

Noooo

nizlopi · 14/05/2012 19:04

I'm glad you've come to your senses and chosen not to burden your child with such a god awful name.

MoonHare · 14/05/2012 19:04

It is a real name as others have said it's the name of the boy in The Neverending Story, which I remember well from my youth - yes and the Limahl theme song too pandawatch!

I like it.

Slightly different but not 'out there' alternatives:

Wyatt, Reuben, Fraser, Rafferty, Jasper, Asher, Caspar, Oscar, Milo, Ian (I love this name and there seem to be no little Ians these days).

Having similar difficulties coming up with boys names too OP, my current favourite is Reuben.

ElsieBeard · 14/05/2012 19:01

sorry but agree with the majority..its horrible. really awful.

and i am almost certain he will get the micky taken out of it!
