I am pregnant with DC2.

I love the name Bruno. I love love love it, and I know that its a marmite name but there is no point in trying to convince me that it is anything other than marvellous. Grin

DP said no :( and I have been sad about it ever since. However, he now says that if we can have Hercules as one of the middle names, we can have Bruno as first name. Now, I know that he may be trying to call my bluff (he insists he he being serious), but its growing on me. Grin

Help!

I only know one Bruno in real life, who is the DH of one of my friends. He's brazilian and ridiculously handsome and lovely (not as much as my DH of course Grin) so I only have positive thoughts on the name!

AvelynRouge · 14/05/2012 15:34

Bruno is awful. But its your child. i do think you both have to sort of like it. but ultimatley you have the last say. my husband hates our daughters middle name "Rouge" but i love it. its pretty much the same as Ruby or Scarlett...just hasnt caught on yet! :-)

squoosh · 14/05/2012 13:52

Well I love it!

Bruno is an ace name, don't listen to all the boring people who say otherwise. It's not like it's a some made up monstrosity, it is a real name. Hercules will certainly attarct attention but I can't see it being negative attention. And how often are middle name mentioned or used? At least it will be a conversation starter :)

Ouroboros · 14/05/2012 13:43

I like the name Bruno, but it was the name of my Nan's dog so out of bounds for me!

Booette · 14/05/2012 13:37

Bruno is fine - DS5 goes to school with a Bruno. It's not a name I'd come across much before (apart from someone calling DS5 Bruno by mistake!)

Hercules, no! Hopefully your DH is having you on!

LineRunner · 13/05/2012 13:19

Bruno Herakles would be more authentic, if we are going down the Road to Madness.

MrsJohnDeere · 13/05/2012 13:14

Bruno is lovely. Hercules is awful and doesn't work with Bruno IMHO.

lunamoon · 13/05/2012 12:03

It all sounds like a character from a children's t.v. programme.
Here comes Bruno hercules to save the day!
Not my cup of tea at all.

scottishmummy · 13/05/2012 11:27

i like bruno
but not with Hercules
what if boy isnt Herculean, what if he is thoughtful, slight and shy. being named Hercules is lot to live up to

Pastoreta · 13/05/2012 11:23

Hello! relatively new to Mumsnet... on my opinion, and being Mediterranean, I think Bruno is a great bold name, and if your husband wants to use Hercule/s as a middle name is fine, he could write his name like Bruno H. Smith (Smith as an other last name) think, that having a middle name like Hercules might trigger in him a special character and even make him to be interested in Ancient History and Mythology which given the circumstances would not be bad as many people are not aware that to learn all that helps to learn about strategy and position in life.. well! ahaha! I perhaps got to far, but I guess you have got the point.
Bruno in the UK can sound awkward, but in most Europe is a strong nice and wise name.

If you have to use the word "brave" in connection with a baby name choice don't do it. You don't know how brave you child might be- he might not be brave at all. And it's him that has to be, for 80 years. You only have to be brave for q couple of weeks, because nobody actually says "bloody hell, what were you thinking of when presented with a beautiful baby and are told that it's called Sequoia Quixote, whatever they say in private later.

Elspeth Penelope Iris is lovely. Have a girl.

ThatsEnoughHasHadEnough · 13/05/2012 07:02

Bruno is a great name for a St Bernard, I'm not quite so convinced that it's great for a baby boy.

Crocodilio · 13/05/2012 03:50

Bruno is great. Hercules is a brave choice but definitely useable for a middle name - go for it!

However, your girls names are gorgeous, no debate required!

SodoffBaldrick · 13/05/2012 02:17

So essentially you've got a stand-off between two stubborn adults who each want their name for the baby and/or to make a point - and in the middle you've got an actual person who has to live with the name as his first and foremost defining feature for the rest of his life...

If you both genuinely like these names and want to call your child them, and feel like you're coming at this from the right place, then there is no real problem with Bruno Hercules. If not, then I think you've being unbelievably childish!

I know this is a bit of a light-hearted thread. :) But please don't put getting one over your OH ahead of what really matters here.

seeker · 12/05/2012 23:12

Children are always asking each other their middle names. Ask your child what their best friend's middle name is- odds on they'll know!

spammertime · 12/05/2012 23:04

I would bet my house that all the people who say that noone uses middle names have either no middle name, or a very safe choice

(speaks the person who hated her unusual middle name and used to dread the seemingly numerous amount of times it needed to be divulged at school)

yellowflowers · 12/05/2012 22:50

I love it. Makes me think of Bruno Brookes, the voice of my childhood.

Chesticles · 12/05/2012 21:51

I like it actually, and I'm normally a bit Hmm about adventurous names. Dilute it with a normal middle name and it's great

Bruno Andrew Hercules
Bruno James Hercules
Bruno George Hercules

Lovely

GoPoldark · 12/05/2012 20:48

Yes yes.

Bruno Torben Hercules

Bruno Dominic Hercules

Bruno Heath Hercules

Bruno Barnabas Hercules

Bruno Bruno Hercules?

thisisyesterday · 12/05/2012 20:48

well I think it's bloody fabulous!

TuesdayNightClub · 12/05/2012 20:44

Elton John's chosen middle name is Hercules. Nuff said, really.

LittlePandaBear · 12/05/2012 20:15

Not my taste but Bruno Mars gets away with it, never heard anyone make fun of his name!

No one would really be aware of his middle name anyway unless they were close family.

BuntyPenfold · 12/05/2012 19:49

I like Bruno, not keen on Hercules.
I agree with the poster above, who said William is the most-teased name in school. I second that. Atticus and Willow (a boy) are not teased; maybe not what you'd expect.

PiedWagtail · 12/05/2012 18:35

Agree with the majority - Bruno nice, Hercules bonkers! And also, OP, Nicholas is not a run of the mill name Angry, and anyway, Bruno NIcholas Hercules sounds terrible!

nooka · 12/05/2012 18:19

But it's not memorable for good reasons. It's memorable because it is silly/pretentious. I don't particularly like Bruno, but there is nothing wrong with it, Hercules on the other hand is really ridiculous. I cannot believe that the OP's DP is doing anything other than emphasizing how much he doesn't like Bruno. Hercules is not just another Greek name, it is the name of a demi-god/hero. If you put it into Google you don't get anything other than references to the legend or trade names. No modern 'Hercules Jones' types at all.

I guess you could tone it down by adding a very classic run of the mill name in between but it seems to me a totally unnecessary burden for a child. My sister has a crazy third middle name. She doesn't use it and really doesn't thank our parents for it either.
