Unusual naming problem - your thoughts please.

I'm in a quandry. In a nutshell, I need to make a choice between giving DC my surname as part of a double barrelled surname with DP or giving her my favourite name.

The reason I have to make this unusual choice is because my surname just doesn't go with the first name I love - it would sound silly if anyone missed out DP's surname in the middle - which people often do with double-barrelled names.

Basically, I have to decide which means more to me - the first name I love or passing on my surname. I'm finding it very hard to decide and would like some opinions and advice please. What would you do? How can I decide? Or am I worrying about nothing - does DPs name separating the first name and my surname (i.e. first name my surname-DP's surname) mean there is no problem.

I would agree with birdofthenorth - give her your favourite name and partner's surname, with your surname as a middle name. Or if you have a middle name that you like, you could pass that on to her instead. I have the same middle name as my mum and it's really special - hoping to pass it on to the next generation if I get chance!

I gave DS my surname as a middle name. Caused a bit of confusion because we got married when I was 18w pg, so rather than change my name completely I used both surnames for the rest of my pg to ensure continuity on the notes etc; and then when DS was born they sort of assumed (understandably) that he also had 2 surnames.

Anyway. Yes, why don't you do that? And if you really don't like the juxtaposition of first-name-that-you-love and your-surname, then perhaps have another middle name as well? Just a short one?

You could always have your surname as a middle name? That way her name will be FavouriteName DPSurname day to day, but would still have your identity as part of her full name?

What's your favourite name? You have to tell us Grin

I see what you mean, I think.
Without the complication of the first name not matching, I thought long and hard about whether I wanted my DCs to have two last names. I decided that I'd prefer them to have DH's surname, but have middle names after members of my family (if that makes sense). I became double barrelled after getting married, and I must admit that although I love my name, it's a bit of a pain in the arse.
