DH and I like the name for DC2 but we aren't welsh so would it be a bit strange? We like unusual names but not too outlandish!

I love it. Know one very lovely boy called Idris. Some of his friends shorten it to Id. Still sounds nice.

abbypumpkin · 06/05/2012 19:42

I like it unusual but not weird. I wouldn't have known it was welsh

Mabinogi · 06/05/2012 19:38

I think Idris is a great name! It's not too hard to pronounce or spell and although it's unusual most people have probably heard of it. Perfect!

PotteringAlong · 06/05/2012 18:48

Idris Elba is very hot!

King Idris was also the last king of libya.

PotteringAlong · 06/05/2012 18:47

My Idris got given a lovely Idris the dragon toy when he was born.

Rindercella · 06/05/2012 18:45

Bof, Grin at our x-posts

BerryLellow · 06/05/2012 18:45

Idris Elba has set the bar rather high :)

Rindercella · 06/05/2012 18:44

Is HOT!

Sorry, I do realise that's totally inappropriate for a baby name thread, but come on! He is hot! And Idris is a great name too Smile

LeBOF · 06/05/2012 18:42

I needed to google, but blimey Shock

MamaLazarou · 06/05/2012 18:37

It's a really lovely and under-used name.

Idris Elba's real name is Idrissa, I think. God, he is gorgeous.

Sunscorch · 06/05/2012 18:37

It's the name of the woman whose body was taken over by the essence of the TARDIS in "The Doctor's Wife", penned by Neil Gaiman.

So yeah ^^ I like it.

TidyDancer · 06/05/2012 18:30

It's not for me tbh, but it's not the worst I've heard!

Catsmamma · 06/05/2012 18:29

he was a lovely dragon in Ivor the Engine.

BorisJohnsonsHair · 06/05/2012 18:28

It's ginger beer, isn't it?

PeahenTailFeathers · 06/05/2012 18:27

It's a beautiful, unusual name.

MrsApplepants · 06/05/2012 13:01

Love it. Great name!

bamboozledAardvark · 06/05/2012 12:59

In that case I think I'll invent a Welsh grandmother if anyone questions our choice of name Wink

Idris! Bottle of pop, as well as the founder of Penscynor Wildlife Park Grin

It's a lovely name, go for it. Familiar bcs of Idris Elba so you'll be fine!

gorionine · 06/05/2012 10:22

ARGHH KNEW! not new!

gorionine · 06/05/2012 10:22

I only new Idris as an Arabic name, I had no idea it was also a welsh one! I love it BTW.

MrsPlanB · 06/05/2012 10:18

Elba. Yum.

MoonlightandRoses · 06/05/2012 00:03

Think it's a great name - strong, but, outside of the UK, probably not tied to a particular country / place.

pegster · 06/05/2012 00:00

Fantastic name, I have an uncle Idris (I'm welsh) and it was a serious contender for DS. Definitely helped by the gorgeous Idris ElbaWink

Dottymcdot · 05/05/2012 22:25

Idris will always be a make of ginger beer to me.

Firawla · 05/05/2012 22:19

i really like it! i had this on the list for ds3 but dh said no cos it rhymes with iblis (another name for devil/satan in arabic)
i think english people can get away with welsh names as wales is close by so how is anyone even going to know if you have any welsh background, maybe you have a welsh granny or something for all they know?! it should be fine?
