Is Marcus really dull?

Now DH and I aren't exactly the most creative baby namers - DS was one of over 1600 boys with his name the year he was born and DD shares a name with over 2000 the year she was born (although hers is the slightly less used spelling/pn) - but we don't want to choose a name that could be seen as dull. Is Marcus though? I can't decide if it's lovely and underused or boring and dull. I've already posted a similar thread about Douglas so be as opinionated as you like!

I am being swayed in the direction of Marcus, but our chosen middle name doesn't go so we need a new one. What do you think of the combo Marcus Jude?

Like Marcus - all the ones I have know are great guys too.

squoosh · 30/04/2012 10:51

Marcus is a good name.

Douglas is not a good name. At all.

SodoffBaldrick · 30/04/2012 03:29

I actually like it - probably not enough to use it myself - but it's a strong, recognisable name, and he'll likely be the only one in the class.

BringBack1996 · 29/04/2012 22:37

Popularity doesn't bother me, although I want it to be less common than DS's particularly as he does get frustrated being one of many, many Edwards!

Looking on that graph there seem to have been around 450 Douglases in the last 5 years and just under 2000 Marcuses.

I'm on the negative side for Douglas I'm afraid.

Bessie123 · 29/04/2012 22:28

Marcus means bellicose.

I love Marcus, thought about it for DS3 but it is the name of a much older, rather odd (but v sweet) colleague of mine, so decided against it. Still love the name, though! Douglas is v good also. Prefer Marcus, though.

BringBack1996 · 29/04/2012 22:16

I'm starting to see that Douglas is a bit of a marmite name - people either love it or hate it!

Marcus would be known as Mark (and a Douglas would be Doug/Dougie) but full name would be on the bc. Geranium both Fergus and Angus are nice but they wouldn't go with the names of our DC!

i've only known one marcus and he was really nice

thegreylady · 29/04/2012 21:50

I like Marcus a lot [only know one child with the name and he is 10]

BBQJuly · 29/04/2012 21:16

It's not dull but I don't really like it - Mark sounds stronger and less fussy.

Mrsmonkfish · 29/04/2012 20:32

Not dull. Classic and strong. Love it.

SandStorm · 29/04/2012 19:53

I have known two people named Marcus and neither of them had much oomph about them. I admit I have been influenced by this but I'm afraid I think of it as a really dull name.

Now Douglas (although I would shorten it to Doug) on the other hand...

FebreezeYourJeans · 29/04/2012 19:52

Marcus is cool

roguepixie · 29/04/2012 19:50

I like Marcus Also like Marco and Marius.

Not keen at all on Douglas.

HandMadeTail · 29/04/2012 19:49

Why dull?

It's a lovely classic name, and not too popular, at the moment. (I think.)

miaowmix · 29/04/2012 19:48

I think it's gorgeous and oddly under-used. Don't like Douglas though, sorry.

Geranium3 · 29/04/2012 19:46

sorry,to me the name marcus sounds arrogant and twattish, can't explain why! Douglas sounds better but v 1960's/70's. If you like names ending in "us" how about fergus or angus? Good luck!

ByTheSea · 29/04/2012 17:10

I love the name and wanted it if I had a boy but DH didn't like it.

StarryEyedMama · 29/04/2012 17:10

Actually I think Marcus is a classic name - good choice!
