Got a Violet in my belly if it turns out to be a girl. 6 weeks to go :)

ScooseLooseAbootThisHoose · 27/04/2012 06:51

Violet is gorgeous

marshmallowpies · 27/04/2012 06:46

I tried Emmeline out on DH as an alternative to Emma, which he likes and I don't...couldn't convince him, sadly. I think Emmy is a nice short nn which isn't too frilly or girlie so I really don't think the name is too feminine.

I like Violet & Juliet but neither work with our surname. Sadie reminds me of Sadie Frost, not a positive association in my book but if you like the name, don't let that put you off even though she is a terrible actor

reallacecurtains · 27/04/2012 06:08

Love Violet as I have one (dd1 - 5) and I only very rarely come across others. Is it really becoming that popular now? I love the fact the name is both soft, sweet feminine and spunky/ feisty (dd can be all of them - she's very tall, fun and sociable, not at all shrinking by any description)

Emmeline would be my second choice and I have considered it as a middle name for dd2 as it is also so similar to my name Grinbut we did not want a mn beginning with E.

MrsTerryPratchett · 26/04/2012 17:03

That's one of the reasons I chose Emmeline. Because I am a rabid feminist but if DD chooses to be a simpering girlie, Emmeline is quite frilly and her girlie friends won't know who Emmeline Pankhurst is. Grin Have you read my namesake Terry Pratchett's books? There is a formidable icon in there called Esmeralda, Esme for short.

birdofthenorth · 26/04/2012 16:05

If I went for Emmeline it would be after Mrs P so I'd have no problem with that! If DD turns out to be a raging misogynist ashamed of her feminist roots, that's her problem Grin

However, DH is currently favouring Esme for a girl, and it does go well with our other DC names, so that migh tbe the frontrunner... for now!

And would it be a bad thing if people went "oh, Emmeline Pankhurst"? Not as good a role model as Sylvia, but not so bad! People have occasionally asked if my daughter is named for Rosa Luxemburg - it wasn't in our minds at the time, but we've taken to saying 'yes'!

MrsTerryPratchett · 26/04/2012 15:44

DD is never confronted by people thinking of Emmeline Pankhurst. Most people are pretty ignorant of history, MN excluded. Only a couple of people realised she had a namesake.

mathanxiety · 25/04/2012 02:54

I love Magda. Also Greta.

PercyFilth · 24/04/2012 17:10

Actually Tabitha is a nice name and Biblical. But ruined by Beatrix Potter. I suppose it was the suggestion of tabby = cat that made her hit on it.

The problem with Emmeline is that she would be constantly confronted with people going "oh, Emmeline Pankhurst".

CPtart · 24/04/2012 16:37

Violet -quite a few about now
Juliet - like
Emmeline - like but you'd spend your life correcting prononciation
Sadie - isn't it a dogs name??!!
Tabitha - dont like, pretentious.

Love Esme

MoonHare · 24/04/2012 16:20

Of your first suggestions, in order, I prefer Violet (by a million miles), then Emmeline (bit too frilly for me though there's a great namesake in Emmeline Pankhurst) then trailing a long way behind Sadie.

However I LOVE both Juliet and Tabitha - especially Tabitha, I have one! My DH vetoed it first time around but he came to love it and when DD2 was born he was happy to go with it. I don't know why people have a problem with it having feline connotations, for me that's part of what makes it such a fab name. We have had loads of compliments on her name since she arrived but it does seem to be a love it/hate it one.

Best wishes

LittleMissSnowShine · 24/04/2012 15:19

Really love Juliet and Violet. Also think Emmeline is very nice too.

I'm from Belfast and Sadie is kind of like a chav-y granny name here (so sorry if anyone's granny is called Sadie btw, i actually think it's a pretty name!), so much so that there used to be this terrible 'character' on a local radio show called Sadie on Downtown Radio with a really screechy voice. And then there's the Kevin & Sadie romance books, also set in Belfast. In short, Sadie is a pretty name but will forever be a chavvy granny name to me, sorry!

And - for any Jilly Cooper fans out there - doesn't Ruper Campbell Black have a daughter called Tabitha? Wink

MrsTerryPratchett · 24/04/2012 15:01

I also like Esme (because of my namesake's books). Emmeline is by far the best, though.

Geranium3 · 24/04/2012 13:58

Great names! In order my faves would be esme, violet, sadie and then emmeline

MagsAloof · 24/04/2012 13:52

Emmeline is nicest by far.

Sadie is sweet but needs a full name.

Juliet is nice.

Not keen on Violet or Tabitha.

BBQJuly · 24/04/2012 12:07

In order or preference

Emmeline
Violet
Juliet
Sadie
Tabitha

PercyFilth · 24/04/2012 12:00

Sadist and Violent are also my first impressions when I see those names :o
Emmeline I find a bit twee, plus there is the inevitable confusion with Emily.
Juliet I am not wild about, but I do like Julia.
Tabitha always makes me think of a cat.
Esme, is there one in Twilight? Tis a bit faddy to my mind anyway.
Magda I like, or Magdalene.

DottieRose · 24/04/2012 11:23

Emmeline and Violet are gorge! Dont like Sadie

lisad123 · 24/04/2012 10:31

Violet gets my vote Smile

Pasiphae · 24/04/2012 10:30

I like Violet the best. It's pretty and fun.

Sadie is cool, but because I see Sad, I always think the name is a bit 'drab' somehow.

Emmeline should be fierce, with Pankhurst and everything, but instead I think it's rather sugary sickly sweet.

TinkerMaloo · 24/04/2012 10:07

Violet by a mile! This is what the little girl I am halfway through carrying right now would have been called if he wasnt a little boy!...

Beautiful classic yet pretty and not common too! :)

birdofthenorth · 24/04/2012 10:05

Esme is another frontrunner (I prefer the Es-mee pronunciation)

birdofthenorth · 24/04/2012 09:10

Yes, it's the inevitable constant confusion with Emily that puts me off Emmeline.

We both alos like Magda, which is a bit leftfield, any thoughts? Maggie or Mags could make cute nicknames?

Don't like Tabitha or Juliet but love the first 3 names. Although I love Emmeline I would have to veto it as would get fed up correcting people all the time.
