Well two actually - when I was pregnant I went out for a meal with three close friends who wanted to discuss my name choices. I love talking names, so happily divulged my first choice - a highly unusual name that I really loved. It went down like a lead balloon, with two of my friends barely disguising their horror/disapproval. I talked it through with dh - who was uncertain whether it would work. Anyway on the day of her birth, dh decided on his own that this unusual name was THE ONE. My friends have been more than a little uncomfortable that we didn't take their advice. (They suggested Florence or Amelia). It's fine now - in that I don't see these friends too often so it's not too awkward. But nearly a year later I do worry a little that I've burdened my dh with a v unusual name. (Dh is happy). I guess it's because the name change deadline is nearly up. I'm not sure I would, more whether I should..... Anyone else wish they'd played it safe? (It's not made up, strangely spelled or anything..)

I think that's really lovely.

I have a friend who has a very unusual name (he's named after the most famous Brazilian footballer, if that helps!). I always wondered whether it bothered him and he always said not. His wife has recently given birth to their first child and they have given him a (different) very unusual name. I take from that, that growing up with an unusual name has been a positive experience for him, because if not he wouldn't have inflicted a bad experience on his own child.

youarekidding · 22/04/2012 21:41

OP do you know the names meaning? (I just googled it! and its lovely)

youarekidding · 22/04/2012 21:40

Oh I love it. Heard of it without the i but absolutely love it with.

Glad posting here has made you feel better. It's horrid when people in RL can (by accident) make you feel bad. At least here you get a wider opinion (as in more people) - and the consensus says - lovely name. Grin

thisisyesterday · 22/04/2012 21:39

ohh it's a lovely name. honestly.
if i thought it was horrid i just wouldn't have come back and posted

I wonder if your mums hesitation is just because she has to think about the pronounciation?
I only say that because I just said it in my head a few times and wasn't sure if the a was long or short.

My dad ever so slightly mis-pronounced ds2's name for quite a long time.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 22/04/2012 21:31

It's a lovely name - don't change it. A nice strong but feminine name.

PoppadumPreach · 22/04/2012 21:25

So disappointed! Thought it was going to be a "bloody hell they called their baby WHAT?!" name, but it's not. It's lovely. Your friends are silly silly.

EverybodysSleepyEyed · 22/04/2012 21:24

SIL burst out laughing when we told her our proposed name for DS

My sis said 'thank god for that' when DH said he was vetoing my name choice for DD. We then used it!

I don't care! Even now everyone has to admit how well the names suit!

winkle2 · 22/04/2012 21:23

That's not too bad! Sounds middle eastern.

ajandjjmum · 22/04/2012 21:19

I love it!

LadyWidmerpool · 22/04/2012 21:19

Very pretty. Your friends were rude and their opinions deserve no further consideration.

QuickLookBusy · 22/04/2012 21:19

I think Brad Pitt's DD is called the same name. It is very pretty.

MiseryBusiness · 22/04/2012 21:17

I went to school with someone with that name. It's really nice.

spammertime · 22/04/2012 21:15

I really don't get what's so bad about it? Or that even merits a "blimey"! It sounds nice, is a proper name, and has a lovely meaning (goddess of beauty).

Don't change it! It's lovely!

FakeFurCoatAndThermalKnickers · 22/04/2012 21:15

Took so long typing that i missed your next post op; lovely name!

Bluebell99 · 22/04/2012 21:14

I like it :) and although it may be unusual, it isn't odd.

DogEared · 22/04/2012 21:14

Never heard of it but it's nice, quite strong. Don't change it.

chocolatecoffinplease · 22/04/2012 21:13

Posting this has been a v positive thing to do. Thanks everyone.

My youngest son has an Irish name which is unusual in England, a name that I really love; when he was born, out of all the names on the shortlist, that was the one that just seemed to fit him. My in laws hated it, I've had one or two friends in the past make rude comments (because its not spelt the way it sounds, mainly) but if I'm honest, I think that reflects badly on them and their social skills rather than my choice of name! But the older he has got, the more confident I am that it was the right choice (it really does suit him), and perhaps because I introduce him more confidently, I get very few comments now; if people do look bemused, I explain and move on. He loves his name, loves being the only person he knows with that name, and his friends have never batted on eyelid. Incidentally my in laws now act as though they have always liked the name and never had a problem with it. Hmm

FairhairedandFrustrated · 22/04/2012 21:11

I think it's lovely :) And in fact know a girl that instead of the Z has a D and emphasis on the first vowel Grin

Chrysanthemum5 · 22/04/2012 21:11

DS is called Campbell which was DH's choice but we love it. My very lovely MIL hated it but now says she can't imagine him being called anything else (he's 7!). And DS loves his name. So I think go with what you love, and ignore other people.

YouAREworthIt · 22/04/2012 21:10

Blimey. Not sure about that one but luckily my opinion doesn't matter.

ThePieSmuggler · 22/04/2012 21:10

Oops slow typing!

I really like that name, definitely keep it! Smile

dustyhousewithdustypeople · 22/04/2012 21:10

That's a gorgeous name! I thought you were going to say something really odd......

Babylon1 · 22/04/2012 21:10

Ah now I like that and there's a variation at my DD1s school, slightly longer version, but lovely.

I don't see any issue at all, enjoy it xx

ThePieSmuggler · 22/04/2012 21:09

Stick with the name you've got, names are used to identify us, imagine how boring life would be if we were all called Jane and John (no offence to the Janes and Johns out there!)

Oh and please, please, please tell us what it is Grin
