Too popular?

Can I have some opinions please? I would like my son's name to be a little different but not too weird. Starting to worry that my favourites might be too common. I'm a teacher so know which names I want to avoid and am also aware how frustrating it can be for children who share their names with lots of others. I prefer something fairly traditional and quite strong; don't want them being teased about something frilly for the rest of their lives! As this our first and we don't have many friends with young children I'm not sure what is popular at the moment.
Our favourites are Noah Joseph or Rowan (undecided middle name). Our last name is Stanley so we've ruled out anything ending in 'ee'. Whenever I've mentioned Noah to anyone older than us (apart from my mum who loves it) they pull a strange face and make other suggestions! My FiL also said he thought a Noah would get bullied! I have no clue why!
Help please x

All lovely names. As you titles the thread "too popular" I thought I'd weigh in with my own observations... I know one little Rowan, two Josephs, and about six Noahs.. (all under three)..

racingheart · 21/04/2012 17:12

Must say Rowan is a girly name to my ears. Noah is gorgeous. Not massive round here, but not 'out there' either. just right. Lovely.
Joseph is lovely too but more common. I know a teenage Joseph Stanley btw and he is really handsome, clever and talented at all sorts of sporty, arty stuff, so it sounds like a good name to my ears.

BuntyPenfold · 21/04/2012 17:13

Rowan is a girl's name to me.
I know a lot of Josephs in the 8-12 age bracket but no baby ones, and no Noahs of any age.
Most popular baby boys names here are Alfie, Harry, Aiden.

Fabnews · 21/04/2012 17:37

I think Joseph is the nicest although not uncommon it's a classic, I know of three noahs under 1 yr old so I think its becoming very popular but will date.

gazzalw · 21/04/2012 17:39

Isn't Rohan a make of outdoor gear - would steer clear of such things methinks.....

Yes, I would consider Rowan to be a girl's name although isn't the outgoing Archbishop of Canterbury a male Rowan????

MarySA · 21/04/2012 19:19

Not keen on Noah at all. Joseph is a perfectly nice and acceptable name. What about Philip. I have a Philip and there doesn't seem to be that many of them. I think it's a bit out of fashion at the moment.

Hope88 · 21/04/2012 19:26

Rowan is great.

Hope88 · 21/04/2012 19:27

Rowan is a boy name.

NotInMyDay · 21/04/2012 19:33

What about Leo or Leon?
Isaac is to die for as is Xavier (Zay-vee-er)

Chubfuddler · 21/04/2012 19:35

Noah is lovely but quite common these days. So if your worried about it being unusual it really isn't.

misslinnet · 21/04/2012 19:48

Noah is perfectly fine. I know a Noah who's about 4.

I've seen Rowan used for both boys and girls, not sure if that bothers you.

IME, older people don't have much idea about what's popular or not for babies names. Your FiL is probably thinking about how his generation would have reacted to a Noah.
My aunty was telling me last year about a friend of hers who had a new grandson - she thought this baby had a very unusual name. They'd called him Jack Wink

Pinkush · 21/04/2012 19:48

All great names- Joseph is my fave. In the end you've just got to go for the name you really love. I've got a Jack and I know there will probably be loads in his class but I love it and it goes perfectly with our very long surname! Good luck!

EllenParsons · 21/04/2012 21:27

I really like all of them. Rowan is definitely the most unusual and is a great name. Joseph probably the most popular, but consistently so. Noah seems to have become quite popular in the last few years.

toobreathless · 21/04/2012 21:39

Joseph: lovely, classic, won't date but popular.

Noah: lovely, on the up, I think may date in a way Joseph won't.

Rowan: lovely, strong for a grown man, unusual. & could be called 'little Roe' as a nn whilst a baby/toddler.

So although I like all three a lot my preference would be Rowan then Joseph then Noah.

lunamoon · 21/04/2012 21:52

I think all those names are fine.
I don't think Noah would get bullied, several years ago it may have cause a "what did you say" kind of reaction, but it is a fairly acceptable name now iykwim.
I would go with Joseph as it is a name that I have always liked.

Stellan · 21/04/2012 22:39

Nothing wrong with Noah, Joseph or Rowan. They're all lovely choices. Good luck choosing.

KatieMiddleton · 22/04/2012 00:41

Erm, it might be gazzalw but it was a name first. Unless polyester outdoor clothing was popular in the middle ages?

It was probably named after a person... Possibly an Indian person because it's not just an old Gaelic name but also Sanskrit.

Frikadellen · 22/04/2012 12:31

Rowan is unisex I find it depend on what people know (if they know a boy rowan they see it masculine and if they know a girl they see it as feminine)

Both for me are fairly common names. Neither make me want to go eww they are pretty names.

But to throw in a suggestion how about Conrad or Bernard both strong traditional underused names imo

LondonNadiy · 22/04/2012 16:21

My brother's name is Conrad, it's worked out for him! NN Con usually. Rohan is nice, but LOTR? I mean, it probably wouldn't bother me but I'm a huge geek! Rowan or Noah are my faves - I like Joesph, but its a bit ordinary. Rowan is unisex, and great for a boy or girl - I don't know any of either gender but I'd happily use it for either a DC or DD.

What about Benedict? Unusual but known, strong name and can always be Ben.

MagsAloof · 22/04/2012 16:50

Noah and Joseph are both incredibly popular. In my DD's nursery in London there are four Noahs.

I like Rowan. Stanley is also nice.

Sebastian
Edward
Jonathan
Jonah
Michael

MoonHare · 22/04/2012 17:48

I like Noah Joseph best. Noah is becoming much more popular though the only one I know of is Chris Evan's son who's about 3 I think. I doubt it would raise any eyebrows among your or your son's peer group.

I do like Rowan but it's unisex and possibly more common for girls than boys these days, though you could check that out on the stats websites.

PercyFilth · 22/04/2012 20:32

I share the opinion of someone who once said on here that Noah sounds like someone farting down a drainpipe. Really don't understand why anyone would like it. Sorry.

KlickKlackknobsac · 22/04/2012 23:07

Still think you're missing the obvious beauty of John Stanley.
That is one fantastic name.
Would suit actor, plumber, dancer, teacher. soldier etc.
What's not to like?
Honestly. Love. That. Name.
