Have always loved the name Sophie/Sophia but realise just how popular it is and probably will be for a good few years.

Thoughts on this close alternative please or any other name suggestions.

Saphira? She's eragons dragon, and a very nice dragon at that!

nickelhasababy · 23/04/2012 15:24

i know someone with Safir as a middle name.

i think it's a plant...

minceorotherwise · 21/04/2012 17:34

I know a sapphire, but it's pronounced saffeera (they aren't English), she gets saffi for short and it's lovely I think

BuntyPenfold · 21/04/2012 17:28

I know a Sapphira, and her friends all pronounce it as Sophia anyway.
Saffron is nice.

Stellan · 21/04/2012 17:03

I also thought 'sapphic' immediately. Could be tough in the teen years being called Sapphia.

If you're pronouncing it as sapphire, just name her Sapphire.

BigHairyFlowers · 20/04/2012 22:46

Lumley trumps stripper.

thirdfromleft · 20/04/2012 22:23

Seriously, Sapphire? How can you think anything other than 'stripper'?

Sapphire is gorgeous - love it.

It was good for Joanna Lumley!

BBQJuly · 20/04/2012 21:53

Sapphire is nice. Ruby, Pearl etc. are not too unusual at the moment, so why not Sapphire as well?

octaviarose · 20/04/2012 21:49

Oh my goodness thanks for pointing out the spelling mistake - yes indeed meant Sapphire - as much as I loved my poetry lessons at school not even I would use that name! It is clearly Friday G&T time!

Do like the way of spelling it Safia though - thanks everyone.

Safia better.

MissGreatBritain · 20/04/2012 21:48

I think it will carry lesbian connotations and therefore lead to teasing from some morons people.

I have a Safia.

Can also be spelt Saffiya.

perplexedpirate · 20/04/2012 21:39

The double p looks like it should be pronounced Sap-fia.
That said, I know a lovely Safia, the name is really nice.

BellaOfTheBalls · 20/04/2012 21:39

I read Sapphia as Sapphire with kr8ive spelling.

Saffia yes.

SundaeGirl · 20/04/2012 21:37

Sapphic? So unfair

Saffron is better

Rocketfox · 20/04/2012 21:36

You are taking the piss, right?! Sapphia is beyond awful! A terrible combination of sappy and sapphic..

Sasha?

MrsLettuce · 20/04/2012 21:32

Safia makes much more sense.

MrsLettuce · 20/04/2012 21:32

Sapphia just looks made up (no idea if it is).

Sapphire, Saffron and Sophia are good.

BeeMyBaby · 20/04/2012 21:29

I have a Safia (named after MIL) and only had extremely positive responses to it, but I'm not so keen on the way you spelled it in your OP.

Queenofcake · 20/04/2012 21:27

Saffy - I know 2. One called Saffy the othe is short for Saffron.

KeepOrfThemCarbs · 20/04/2012 21:27

I agree if you like Sophia, just use Sophia.

I am the mother of a Sophia, it is a lovely name far better than Sophie

ShowOfHands · 20/04/2012 21:26

Noooooooooo. Sapphic. NO.
