Having a wobble about Esther - nice or not?

After much discussion, we'd finally decided on the name Esther for our baby due this summer. We love it, but a couple of family members have looked quizzical/faintly appalled at our choice. Now I'm wondering if it's a nice name at all. The Rantzen factor seems to be the main objection, but it's not as though she's on TV all the time. What do you think?

I think its a nice name - unusual but not too "out there". People always feel the need to comment when you tell them which names you are considering. Or in my case, after the baby is BORN and NAMED my mother started making other name suggestions (she was not involved in whittling down the short-list so felt compelled to have her say after the fact). I was so hurt (wicked post-partum hormones) I still haven't quite got over it (DS is 19m now).

Don't like sorry

anychocswilldo · 21/04/2012 14:54

I don't like it but so what? The important thing is u like it, believe me u will always have people that dislike ur choice of name no matter what it is, so go with what u love.

nizlopi · 21/04/2012 14:54

I really dislike it, but it is 'on trend' right now

ButterPecanMuffin · 21/04/2012 12:55

I think it's a beautiful name. Really beautiful.

WithACherryOnTop · 21/04/2012 12:33

It's beautiful and strong.A perfect choice.

JustHecate · 21/04/2012 07:28

It's VERY nice.

I am also an Esther.

I hated it when I was a kid, (I think most children hate their names at some point.) but I love it now.

It's a classic. It's timeless. Some names date you, this one doesn't.

Baby - yup.

ester
hester
esta
and my all time favourite - ster

I mean WHAT? Ster? I suppose S-ter, but really, come on! Grin

I'm an Esther, and although I hated it when I was younger-always having to correct people spelling it wrong (you would be surprised how people struggled with spelling it) and the Esther rantzen jokes and teasing at school, I actually quite like it now. I don't think the Esther rantzen thing will be an issue these days though as she isn't around so much.... If you love it, use it... I like the fact that no one else has the same name as me..... Grin

manicinsomniac · 18/04/2012 21:36

I like it

And it's quite uncommon now too.

MerryMarigold · 18/04/2012 20:54

Love it.

janie2 · 18/04/2012 20:53

Love it!

thereistheball · 18/04/2012 20:52

I love Esther. Go for it.

Heartbeep · 18/04/2012 20:44

It's a lovely name!

Zone2mum · 18/04/2012 20:18

Esther is a lovely name, I think. Beautiful and strong.

MoonHare · 18/04/2012 19:21

To add to the positive vibe - LOVE the name Esther, gutted that I named my cat Esther is the pre baby years when I just called her a name I loved without a thought to the future. We've had her 12 years so now way we could ever use it for a child. But you should go for it, ignore relatives who wrinkle their noses they will come round.

gafhyb · 18/04/2012 19:11

Like it.

BBQJuly · 18/04/2012 18:56

Esther is quite nice, but Hester seems a bit frumpy and jolly hockey sticks.

How about Estella?

geraldinetheluckygoat · 18/04/2012 14:54

I love it! And hester!

ghosteditor · 18/04/2012 14:53

I like it! 'Hester' is DD's middle name and is Greek for star; I'm not sure if Esther is the same root? At any rate, a friend's 6 week old DD is Esther and she's lovely too Grin

FunnysInLaJardin · 18/04/2012 14:50

I like it and Hester was at the top of our girls name list, hetty for short. We had boys in the end. Oh and ref asking other folk, we didn't do this with either of ours and didn't tell anyone until the DC were born for the very reason that we didn't care what other folk thought, and knew some wouldn't hesitate to tell us how crap our choices were.

kickingKcurlyC · 18/04/2012 14:47

It's a really nice name. I like Hester too.

nwthree · 18/04/2012 14:20

Thanks everyone. You're absolutely right that our first mistake was canvassing opinion. We will keep our mouths shut and use the name we love.

I think it's beautiful, I'd gladly use it for our baby if only DH would agree!

SoFarWeAreEqual · 18/04/2012 13:43

Love it. Also love Hester

rocket74 · 18/04/2012 13:42

I really like it and had a really good friend called it too. She had a sister called Esme which is a similar option and also pretty.

I won't really discuss names with family until the baby is born as they feel they can give their opinion - but once its born they are more inclined to go along with it!! We had a lot of 'WHat??!! are you joking?' for our sons name but we kept it and now everyone likes it because they love him x
