Hi all

We are planning to call our first baby Hazel and we cannot work out which middle name goes best, so far we have come up with:-

Violet
Erica
Iris
Meredith
Meriel
Clarissa
Elspeth

Can anyone tell me which of the above work best/should be avoided please! Or any new ideas gratefully received as well.

Our surname is Wll*ms by the way.

Thanks!

May is pretty, I will definitely suggest that one to OH.

Not sure about "Nut"! :)

How about Belinda or Sylvie? Hazel Sylvie maybe has too many Z/s sounds running together but Belinda might work?

Maybe I should stick with Meredith or similar. Megan? Mildred? Matilda?

This is so tricky!!

Nut?!

justonemorethread · 17/04/2012 14:30

May?
As in
Hazel May

Thanks for replies, good points about too many l's / el sounds in Clarissa and Meriel and Elspeth. Looks like Meredith may be or best bet.

I love the name Abigail but my sister is an Abigail so I can't use that (want to avoid naming after family to avoid upsetting other family members!)

I have an Abigail Hazel so umm, Abigail?!

I think Hazel Meredith or Hazel Clarissa sound best.

Violet - lovely but agree too botanical with Hazel
Erica - ditto
Iris - ditto
Meredith - like
Meriel - too much to have two names ending in "el"
Clarissa - like
Elspeth - nice name but you'd have the "el" of Hazel going into the "El" of Elspeth so it sounds awkward

Chesticles · 17/04/2012 14:02

I think Meredith works best

Hazel Violet - too similar with colour/nature matches
Hazel Erica - works well
Hazel Iris - again too much nature matches
Hazel Meredith - works well
Hazel Meriel - too many ..els.

Hazel Clarissa - I find difficult to say due to the L of clasrissa
Elspeth - again difficult to say and too many els

I think short names such as Anne, Jane, Emma all work well as middle names with Hazel. Mary is lovely but Hazel Mary sounds like Hail Mary!

I ove the name Hazel btw. Good choice!

MimsieD · 17/04/2012 13:54

Meredith was my instant fav. All the best with your choosing Xx

AngelWreakinHavoc · 17/04/2012 13:51

Ahh I never thought of that lol. I like Meredith too.

I wanted to call my Daughter Ellis as a middle name but it didnt go with her first name so ended up with Elizabeth (which was my ex's mums Middle Name) but when I hear it it always makes me think of Betty.

Choosing names is so hard. When I named my first born I didnt know anyone else with that name, now he is 15 and I must know about 15 people with the same name Confused

louisdog · 17/04/2012 13:45

Ah thanks yes indeed, I searched Erica + Heather and it comes up with loads of hits! Interesting stuff. I wonder if "ericaceous" is a related term? But I digress! Anyway will avoid Erica to avoid double-botanicalling.

Jade is nice too except I always think of Jade Goody when I hear that name - obviously watched too much BB in my time.

Erica is the latin name for Heather,I'm not sure if that is its origin but it's what I think of when I hear the name.

AngelWreakinHavoc · 17/04/2012 13:37

I think Jade would go nice :)

louisdog · 17/04/2012 13:35

Thanks for the replies. Yes maybe two botanicals would be ott. Didn't realise Erica was botanical.

Hm this naming stuff is so tricky!

blackteaplease · 17/04/2012 13:34

I'm not sure I would go for two botanical names, so that rules out Erica, Violet and Iris.

Out of the remainder of your list I love Elspeth and Meredith.

WestWinger · 17/04/2012 13:34

I like Meredith. Lovely choices!

inmysparetime · 17/04/2012 13:31

My Hazel has Jane as a middle name.

BlueChampagne · 17/04/2012 13:30

Meredith or Meriel
