Does Tallulah really conjure up a stripper?

my dh just loves Tallulah for a girl and we can't agree on any other names we both like. We want something a little different and
poshish but I'm just worried when they areolder could they really be a doctor or teacher with the name. My dh seems to think there wouldn't be a problem but he is quite confident and opinionated! Could I call a little girl this?

I prefer Delilah...

squoosh · 18/04/2012 12:09

Oh and definitely not posh!!!! Nope.

boschy · 18/04/2012 11:56

it's a lovely name! posher than Tamara (which always sounds like 'tomorrow' said badly to me...)

MitrochondrialEve · 18/04/2012 10:58

have share some - should be share some Blush

kickingKcurlyC · 18/04/2012 10:55

It does sound quite stripperish to me. (Sorry.)

doctordwt · 18/04/2012 10:45

It just sounds a bit silly.

Tamara is better...

MitrochondrialEve · 18/04/2012 10:39

I wouldn't say it was posh at all - quite the opposite. It does seem a bit try-hard. Some people will think it is stripperish/Bugsy Malone-ish even if you don't. I think it would be a bit of a burden in adulthood.

Tamara and Lucinda are a bit nearer to posh, and have share some sounds with Tallulah.

squoosh · 18/04/2012 10:31

Definitely a stripper name to me, as others have said similar to Lola in feel.

At least it's not Lolita. People have actually called their child this, 9 last year so the stats say, it makes me Shock Shock Shock

YouChangeWithTheWeather · 18/04/2012 09:13

Tallulah is a duck. Friend of Maisy the mouse.

It'd be name most children pronounce weirdly until they can say the L sound, usually L is 'yer' so more like Tah-yoo-yer.

I imagine it's difficult to match sibling names too as well.

Hersetta · 18/04/2012 09:06

For me it runs in the same club as Lola, Scarlett etc. Just doesn't sound suitable for a small child as it sounds like the names of exotic dancers.

Frontpaw · 18/04/2012 08:05

I think Bugsy Malone.

Also... When DS is being a bit melodramatic (as young children can) I do tend to say 'OK Talulah, no-one is going to die if they don't get ice cream!'

sunnydelight · 18/04/2012 08:00

I love the name (and knew two beautiful little baby Tallulahs). Yes, I'm of an age to know the Bugsy Malone song but so what.

AngryBeaver · 17/04/2012 20:32

yumo...it conjures up the polar opposite for me!!!
Jesse wallace (kat Slater from Eastenders) has a child called Tallaulah...that's the image it conjures up fro me " Tallaulah Slay'a,gerr here naaahhhh!" Wink

RichManPoorManBeggarmanThief · 17/04/2012 06:33

My friends DD is Tallulah (Lulu). They have a really rock and roll surname though so the name really works as the girliness of Tallulah is contrasted by the hardness of the surname.

Before then I would have said "strippers name" but now I know one, it's different as she is a right little character/tomboy

YunoYurbubson · 17/04/2012 06:28

Talulah conjures up a little girl in a Hotchpotch Boden frock and Laura Ashley cardi, with brothers called Oscar and Jack, and a family Labrador called Cadbury.

Rollersara · 17/04/2012 06:11

A friend of mine is a burlesque dancer and her stage name is Tallulah!

SodoffBaldrick · 17/04/2012 05:58

It doesn't sound stripper-ish per se... It just, um, lacks substance and, er, sounds a bit flighty. A kid's name. I guess this is a diplomatic way of saying, 'what nooka said'... Grin

Sorry. But we can't all like the same things.

Stripper..and the Tallaulah in Bugsy was supposed to be a bit tarty wasn't she?
What about Talia?

totallyskint · 17/04/2012 03:33

Not to me, I absolutely love the name Tallulah, it looks and sounds pretty.

As for the doctor and teacher nonsense, of course she take whatever career path she chooses. Plenty of smart professional people have cool names.

PoorAudreyHorseface · 17/04/2012 02:43

agree with nooka, Tallulah is a silly sounding name.

nooka · 17/04/2012 02:26

For me I think that the problem with Tallulah is more that it's a bit silly sounding. Perhaps because Bugsy Malone is just so associated with my childhood I just can't imagine an adult choosing this as a name (except for celebrities who seem to prefer the daft when it comes to names). Plus she was a bit of a sad character really. Possibly the chicken from Maisy is more relevant now though!

Have to say if you are looking for something that sounds a bit 'posh' Tallulah probably isn't the way to go.

toobreathless · 17/04/2012 01:10

Oops. Sorry, my post on your other name thread might have contributed to this.

To me yes Talluhah = stripper personally. I feel the same way to some extent about Lola. But, it's clearly a personal thing & not everyone has the same association.

Aliportico: I'm a doctor & I am only ever called 'Dr Surname' by the mortuary, on official letters & by some elderly patients. To everyone else including most of the patients I am called by my first name. So I would caution people not to think that a professional would not be using there first name in a professional capacity.

threeleftfeet · 16/04/2012 23:18

I like Tallulah and Lulah's great :)

bibbitybobbitybunny · 16/04/2012 22:37

Yes, and becoming surprisingly common too.
