Boaz and Ezra....what do you think????

I am considering both. Already have a boy with an E name, though not sure if that is a problem really!!
Our surname begins with a B so wondering if that rules out Boaz?

So apart from that what do you think of the two names???

I have an Ezra, he turned 1 today!:)

WithACherryOnTop · 21/04/2012 19:23

Ezra is lovely. Boaz is horrid.

EldonAve · 17/04/2012 20:05

Ezra lovely
not keen on Boaz

ElephantsAreMadeOfElements · 17/04/2012 20:01

She'd never need to relabel school uniforms, though. And Eli The Younger would have ready access to ID to prove he was old enough to drink in pubs/clubs, so it would be a win for everyone really (even the older DS -- when I was pregnant with DC2 my DS really wanted the baby to have the same name as him if it turned out to be a boy. And to be called "Mummy" if it was a girl).

CuppaTeaJanice · 17/04/2012 19:54

She can't have two sons both called Eli though, Pixie. That would be a bit too 'George Foreman'!

Pixieonthemoor · 17/04/2012 14:43

Sorry but I think both are hideous.

Someone up thread mentioned Eli - now THAT is cool!!

MagsAloof · 17/04/2012 09:03

Boaz is awful.

Love Ezra, though.

revolutionconfirmed · 17/04/2012 07:28

Ezra is fab.

Minione · 17/04/2012 07:15

Love Ezra, was on my list for Ds. Also love Eli and Ds middle name, Elias. Boaz is ok and goes with Eli but my vote would be for Ezra.

ComposHat · 16/04/2012 05:26

Boaz is fairly common in Israel I think. Not a fan though.

Ezra I'd associate with the poet Ezra Pound who became a raging fascist and antisemite in the 30s.

Gunznroses · 15/04/2012 23:11

aberdeen im very sleepy but was just [shocked] at the penis explanation! never read nor heard anything like that before about boaz i mean. Anyway...........i guess you won't be going anywhere near "Moses" then Grin

tummytickler · 14/04/2012 18:55

I have a 9 year old Eli and when we were pregnant with ds2, 5 years ago we considered Ezra, but decided it was too similar (for us), but it is so lovely.
Boaz is ace! Absolutely gorgeous.
I would go for Boaz (we went for Amos).
Also love Gideon, Jethro, Micah, Abraham, Moses, Peter, David, Solomon.

Stellan · 14/04/2012 18:23

I think you can get away with Eli and Ezra because one's an 'ee' sound and the other more of an 'eh' sound. I probably wouldn't name twins Eli and Ezra - as that could be a little bit too cute - but an older sibling called Eli (i.e. in a different year at school etc.) should be fine.

Other 'cool'-sounding Biblical names:
Amos
Asa
Asher
Barnabas
Cornelius
Gideon
Isaiah
Javan
Jesse
Joel
Josiah
Levi
Micah
Phineas
Reuben
Rufus
Simeon
Tobiah

DottieRose · 14/04/2012 16:05

I think that I am pretty much sold on Ezra at this stage! The only thing that is still niggling me is Eli and Ezra too many E's? Though looking at it now it seems like a cute sibset!

Love Ezra, not so sure about Boaz.

nooka · 14/04/2012 05:35

We were going to use Ezra, but had dd instead. We thought Ezzie would be a very cool name :) ds's best friend is called Eli (Elijah). His older brother is Solomon (Sol).

AberdeenAngusina · 14/04/2012 00:19

Morning, Gunz, Smile My (older) kids were told in Sunday school that "uncovering his feet" meant "uncovering his penis" and I just generally think eeewww. Mind you, I'm not being logical here, because we have a David, regardless of what David got up to with Bathsheeba! But there's lots of different Davids, whereas the only Boaz I know is the uncovered penis guy!

Gunznroses · 14/04/2012 00:07

Good morning Aberdeneen Smile. I actually know the story of Boaz and Ruth, but i'm still scratching my head how "child friendliness" comes into, and why THAT would make the name unsuitable.

I dont think anyone thinks about the complexities of explaining other biblical names e.g Jacob, Israel, Isaac, Eve, Adam, whats so special about Boaz ? he was a good man, he married his Kinsman's widow as was the culture then, and Ruth liked him, for their culture it was quite romantic, what's difficult to expain ?

AberdeenAngusina · 13/04/2012 23:52

Gunz, in the Bible, Ruth is widowed and has no one to protect her. Her late husband's relative, Boaz, is known to be a good man, and lets her gather some of his crops to eat. Ruth, however, is more pro-active than just gathering crops. She creeps in after Boaz is asleep and lies down at his feet. He wakes and is startled to find a woman in his bed. He agrees to marry her. They have children, and start a dynasty which ultimately included Jesus.

It's not a very child friendly story because it's a bit complicated, and it's not obvious to children why she forces his hand, marriage-wise, by getting into his bed.

FairyArmadillo · 13/04/2012 21:32

I know a little Boaz. He gets called Bo.

Gunznroses · 13/04/2012 21:30

"child friendly ?" what do you mean Confused

AberdeenAngusina · 13/04/2012 20:58

Yes to Ezra. Boaz, with a "B" surname - maybe not. Also, whilst the Biblical Boaz is a good man, it's not the most child-friendly story in the Bible.

shrinkingnora · 13/04/2012 20:44

Makes me think of the book The Lion of Boaz-Jachin and Jachin-Boaz. Can't remember anything about it!
