What do you think of Lux?

I love it and so does my DH. We had a family friend that we were very close to called Lux and she died recently and we'd like to use the name but have no idea what other peoples reactions would be. She was the only Lux I'd ever met so I assume it isn't a popular name.

I know it was a character name in Virgin Suicides which doesn't bother me, I like the film. There was a detergent called Lux too, but I doubt many under 20 years old would have ever heard of it now so don't think that would be a problem when baby is older if you see what I mean.

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Shinyshoes1 · 13/04/2012 09:58

i immediately read the thread title and thought to myself 'lux is a soap ' Hmm

I don't like it but it's not my baby

margoandjerry · 13/04/2012 09:55

fair enough re teasing. I wouldn't want all the over 20s making this face though Hmm.

LydiaWickham · 13/04/2012 09:50

Lux Airport

LydiaWickham · 13/04/2012 09:47

It makes me think of Luxembourg. Lux is the short hand for it, it's the airport 'tag' (don't know what those 3 letter codes for airports are called).

could it be short for something? (other than the small tax haven principality in Europe)

GymBunnyBob · 13/04/2012 09:42

Thanks Blue. She'd love to meet a biker or two I'm sure, maybe they could finally teach her some balance. Riding a bike, staying on a horse and standing on a ladder were all things that foxed her!

Margo Because I don't expect people who are currently adults to be teasing my future DD in school when she is older. I think that for children her own age soap won't spring to mind so its unlikely that it would be a big teasing issue.

GymBunny, now I'm imagining your friend Lux meeting Biker Lux in the afterlife! I'm warming to Lux as a name - and the association with light is lovely.

margoandjerry · 13/04/2012 09:34

Soap, totally soap. If you went on Family Fortunes and had to answer the question "We asked 100 people to name a brand of soap" it would be in the top three I'd guess! I'd go Lux, Palmolive, Pears.

Why would you only think about what people under 20 think about the name? Most of the world is over 20 Grin.

GymBunnyBob · 13/04/2012 09:30

In real life the few people I have asked have all first associated with Virgin Suicides, surprised that on here more have said soap.

(as in, I'm the geek, for associatingit with other units of measurement)

UnderwaterBasketWeaving · 13/04/2012 09:28

And a geek

BaronessBomburst · 13/04/2012 09:27

I thought of a cinema. And then soap.

messagetoyourudy · 13/04/2012 09:27

I really like it.

For some reason I think of it as a boy's name more than a girls name but I think it would work for either.

It's quirky but not too out there as it is already a familiar word if that makes sense?

Stellan · 13/04/2012 09:27

Reminds me of Lux from The Virgin Suicides (book by Jeffrey Eugenides; film by Sofia Coppola).

UnderwaterBasketWeaving · 13/04/2012 09:27

Thanks Blue! I didn't think I was quite right, but I've monitored light in Lux for work before. Found it now.

Sadly, I would always associate a child named Lux with words like centimetre or lightyear. Because I am juvenile!

TeWihara · 13/04/2012 09:26

TBH, the only people who are going to think 'soap!' are people old enough to have gone shopping for the household soap - so adults, and hopefully they would have enough sense not to go on about it.

Lux is the unit of light, but again I don't think that's a bad shared meaning.

GymBunnyBob · 13/04/2012 09:26

Blue That made me laugh, the very idea of her on a bike is Shock. Must have been another Lux I think!
Never heard of Lux Interior, will go and google.

Oops, sorry, it's the unit of measurement of illuminescence

ScrambledSmegs · 13/04/2012 09:24

Isn't there a piece of music called Lux Aeterna or something?

I think younger people probably wouldn't make the soap association, if you're really set on it. I'm 35 though, and it's the first thing that sprang to mind. You'll have to develop a thick skin around outspoken ladies of a certain age!

Bluestocking · 13/04/2012 09:24

UnderWater, the unit of measurement for light is the lumen!

TeWihara · 13/04/2012 09:23

I think it's nice too, and naming her after your friend is a really lovely idea.

I would agree that soap is not an awful connotation anyway! (It's not like it's a brand of herpes medication or similar)

Bluestocking · 13/04/2012 09:23

Too soapy for me - and I'm pretty sure Lux soap and Lux soapflakes still exist. The other connotation (for me, but I am ancient) is Lux Interior, who was the lead singer of The Cramps. OP, was your friend a biker? I saw a biker funeral just recently with the name Lux spelled out in flowers on the coffin.

PinkPolkaDots · 13/04/2012 09:22

I do think of soap/shower gel but I like your reasons for choosing it. Maybe a middle name??

pictish · 13/04/2012 09:22

Lux Interior from The Cramps - that's what it makes me think of. He's dead now mind you.

Yeah...I quite like it. Why not?

UnderwaterBasketWeaving · 13/04/2012 09:21

Isn't Lux the unit of measurement for light?
