What do you think of Lux?

I love it and so does my DH. We had a family friend that we were very close to called Lux and she died recently and we'd like to use the name but have no idea what other peoples reactions would be. She was the only Lux I'd ever met so I assume it isn't a popular name.

I know it was a character name in Virgin Suicides which doesn't bother me, I like the film. There was a detergent called Lux too, but I doubt many under 20 years old would have ever heard of it now so don't think that would be a problem when baby is older if you see what I mean.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
TheSoggyBunny · 14/04/2012 19:37

Sorry, I'd just keep thinking of streetlights.

SwedishEdith · 14/04/2012 19:36

I might now

"I don't understand the soap obsession."

Because it is a brand of soap. Simple. I have never come across anyone with that name before.

PfftTheMagicDraco · 14/04/2012 19:31

I don't understand the soap obsession.

It's not like it's Flash, or Pampers, or something that mainstream. Also, there are plenty of names that have these connotations, Cosmo, Jackie, etc.... once you have named that child, they are the name, it's just who they are. Go for it, OP!

PfftTheMagicDraco · 14/04/2012 19:27

Lux Aeterna is a marvellous piece of music. I have never heard of the soap.

i like it

SwedishEdith · 14/04/2012 19:14

Grin @ Luxembourg not looming large in your life.

Too much potential for "Lux sux", "Lux fux", "Lux lix" comments was my first thought. It's just a non-name.

whimsicalname · 14/04/2012 19:00

Not sure if you're still keeping track OP, but I've been following with interest! The idea of not naming your child a name you like because there is a brand like that is interesting to me. My middle son is called Cosmo, and it never occurs to me now that there is a magazine or cocktail of the same name. And to be honest, we have more people say 'oh like the Archbishop' (Or Julie Burchill's ex) than 'oh, like the magazine'.

The other thing I would say, is it's a really interesting arbiter of people's opinions. Hardly any one I like has reacted badly to it, whereas dull colleagues or random people in the park say things like 'is that actually a name?' Very few people have ever commented on my other sons' names, to the extent that even though one of them has quite a usual name, we have now met more Cosmos, just because people called that come and introduce themselves to us. We've met maybe 4 that way. None of the adult ones regretted their name!

Good luck with your decision.

Bunbaker · 14/04/2012 18:32

Luxembourg doesn't loom large in my life either. I was reminded of the small principality by the Hairy Bikers the other week though.

Bluestocking · 14/04/2012 14:49

Lydia, I can only speak for myself, but Luxembourg does not loom large in my life. Should it?

LydiaWickham · 14/04/2012 13:28

I'm surprised how few people are thinking "Luxembourg" as it's normally shortened to Lux. Just don't move there, it'd be weird.

Journey · 14/04/2012 12:23

Soap

notso · 14/04/2012 12:15

I really like Jo Whiley's first three DC names.
Not keen on Coco Lux though.
I never get the trying too hard comment about names though' trying too hard to be/do what? Confused

Bunbaker · 14/04/2012 12:11

Soory, but it screams out soap to me as well. Children won't realise, but adults will automatically think of soap. I also don't like the words that it rhymes with.

So, it's a no from me.

But my opinion doesn't matter, although, by asking on here it means you did want to know what other people thought.

I love it. Simple, easy to spell and pronounce, but very unique.

I also think that you need to go with what you and DH really like. As soon as you start soliciting advice, you're going to get lots of people saying it's crap - even for the simplest, least offensive name you could think of.

It's so hard to find a name that you both like that I think you should go for it.

And if you knew someone close to you with this name, especially someone that passed away recently, that could/should easily shut the naysayers up.

fluffygal · 14/04/2012 11:44

I like it, there are so many names which are used for products/objects which are perfectly acceptable names. There is a 4 year old at our gym called Seven, was a bit Hmm to start with (mainly as the beckhams have now used it for their girl) but hey, its his name, people are used to it and the other kids don't bat an eyelid. Go for it if you love it!

tunaday · 14/04/2012 11:20

If I heard the name and hadn't seen it typed first I'd think she was called 'Looks.' Soap too. Yes, there is a choral work called Lux Eterna. It's very very beautiful/ethereal but funerial.

fanjodisfunction · 14/04/2012 10:14

I really like it and it has a wonderful meaning to you, naming your child after someone you both loved is lovely. You should deffinlty go for it.

MummysLittleSunbeams · 14/04/2012 07:14
  1. Soap
  2. Bloody Jo Wiley & her trying-way-too-hard-to-be-hip names!
SLVC · 13/04/2012 23:18

I think it's a lovely idea to name a child after your friend, and personally haven't heard of the soap..

sashh · 13/04/2012 23:07

Sorry I thought soap too
