What do you think of Lux?

I love it and so does my DH. We had a family friend that we were very close to called Lux and she died recently and we'd like to use the name but have no idea what other peoples reactions would be. She was the only Lux I'd ever met so I assume it isn't a popular name.

I know it was a character name in Virgin Suicides which doesn't bother me, I like the film. There was a detergent called Lux too, but I doubt many under 20 years old would have ever heard of it now so don't think that would be a problem when baby is older if you see what I mean.

Soap. Sorry

WithACherryOnTop · 21/04/2012 12:44

It's awful. It makes me think of soap too,and I'm also in my 20s.

smokeandglitter · 20/04/2012 14:33

Adore the name Lux. Doesn't it mean light? I also adore 'The Virgin Suicides' though, such a fab book!

greenplastictrees · 18/04/2012 21:25

The was an American programme on E4 last year and the main character was called Lux. She was feisty, strong and really nice so I associate it with that. I like it.

How likely is it that someone called Rich(ard) will be called a bitch though?

doctordwt · 18/04/2012 16:33

'I think giving your daughter a name that so obviously rhymes with a swear word risks horrendous bullying at high school.

When your daughter has a job, she will have to spell out her name over the phone all the time to people who have misheard and will think she has just sworn at them.'

-- Eh?? So you'd advise anyone called Rich to change their name immediately, just incase someone asking their name on the phone might think they'd just called them a bitch?

And Matt - 'Did you just call me a twat?'

Grin Grin Grin

Lux doesn't 'so obviously rhyme with a swear word' any more than either of those!!

Really scraping the barrel here now guys...

Lux is lovely. Troofact Grin

"I'm in my twenties and don't remember Lux soap at all. It's only old biddies who will think that"

I am also in my twenties and the first thing I thought of was soap.

MitrochondrialEve · 18/04/2012 10:55

Did your friend have a middle name?

It's lovely that you want to name your daughter after your friend, but your friend presumably grew up in a more "innocent" time and may have avoided adolescent teasing.

I think giving your daughter a name that so obviously rhymes with a swear word risks horrendous bullying at high school.

When your daughter has a job, she will have to spell out her name over the phone all the time to people who have misheard and will think she has just sworn at them.

doctordwt · 18/04/2012 10:42

MyNameIs - looks? For Lux?

Assume if you lived in Liverpool/Yorkshire/Newcastle then they might, where I'm from it would be more 'lucks'

so depends where OP is really!

Pixieonthemoor · 17/04/2012 14:51

I think it's lovely and if you had a friend who recently died with that name thenI think it is a wonderful way to commemorate her. I say go for it!! She will certainly be remembered and stand out from all those dull top 10 names!!

MyNameIsInigoMontoya · 16/04/2012 23:20

Soap.

And if she said it to people on the phone they would think "Looks?".

SuzysZoo · 16/04/2012 23:19

Not great if they ever move to New Zealand where I think Lux means "hoover" as in - "I need to Lux this room". Lux is the equivalent of Hoover there.

Rebecklet . I loved the Lux shower gels that were out about 5 years ago. Was annoyed when they took them off the market.

rebecklet · 16/04/2012 15:03

Should be thought

rebecklet · 16/04/2012 15:02

I instantly though shower gel.

Then I tried to think of other names with soap connotations and all I could come up with was Daz - which I think is even worse.

LydiaWickham · 16/04/2012 14:53

DaSmall - that's why this topic is good, in real life, most people wouldn't be brave enough to say to a pregnant woman "Lux, like the soap?" they'd say "oh that's nice." and think "WTF, she's naming her child after a brand of soap." Then the child has to live with being named after a brand of soap, who's peers might be too young to remember, but who's peers' parents and first boss probably won't be. It only takes one person's parent to say "like the soap" to a school friend.

If you are going to give your DC an unusual name with teasing potential it's best to be forwarned so you can plan for it or just not give your DC a name that lends itself to teasing better that than be surprised by it later.

scottishmummy · 16/04/2012 10:49

lux I'd think light measurement,illuminances
and soap
or slang for luxury items...pure dead lux maaaaan

so for all this reasons....no

squoosh · 16/04/2012 10:33

Bit odd to get furious because people associate the name with a brand. It is a brand name, deal with it.

Never met a person called Lux, met lots of bars of soap called Lux.

Bucharest · 16/04/2012 06:52

I would think a) soap b)Fiat Lux (let there be light) c) that you'd spelled Luz wrong.

Either way I'd giggle in a Wtf way.

exoticfruits · 16/04/2012 06:49

People would be as well to take note-I agree that there are a lot of 'us old biddies' about and we will still be here when the new generation are here-thinking 'why call her after a washing product!'
Having googled I see that you can still buy it anyway-and not just old biddies.

Bunbaker · 16/04/2012 06:36

"I'm in my twenties and don't remember Lux soap at all. It's only old biddies who will think that"

There are a lot of us old biddies about, so the word Lux will mean soap to us. Live with it.

upahill · 15/04/2012 23:56

A bit of an overreaction DaSmall getting Furious?
