I've recently made friends with someone. She was pregnant. I've given her lots of baby things, clothes, toys, equipment etc etc. chatted a lot. She has just given birth..... And she has called her son my sons name! A rather uncommon name with our unique spelling. I'm really quite pissed off. My partner can't understand why! Am I being unreasonable?......

Yes I would be pissed off.

It might be unreasonable, but I would be anyway!

I had an unusual name on the list for DS, which we didn't use but may well for our next DS. I got back in contact with an old school friend recently, and by complete coincidence one of her DS's has the same unusual name!

Even though I chose it before meeting her DS, and we rarely see them, I'd still at least warn her, but more likely ask her how she feels about us using the name, if we get the chance.

Similarly, my best friend had a baby recently. She asked if I minded them using the name I had picked out for a girl (I'd had a DS). I said I didn't mind at all. But had she not asked I would have!

It's the decent thing to do.

I think it matters more, the more unusual the name is - if was a popular name then the parents are presumably happy with there being lots about.

They still sell Caramacs. Definitely too sweet. I'd say Cormac is the normal spelling. I'd be a little put out if it was very unusual, and she could only have heard it from me, but not with what I would consider a normal name - I'm Irish though, so I know a fair few Cormacs! I think I'd try and feel flattered - I know I've considered names I'd never have thought of after hearing them on friend's DCs. Don't know if I'd use them though - not without at least a jokey 'I'm stealing that name' or something.

And alexpolismum - I'm trying to get Ariadne on the list but DP (no taste) is having none of it. Yet.

OP - there is no letter K in the Irish alphabet [http://www.omniglot.com/writing/irish.htm Irish alphabet]] so I do think that Cormac is the normal spelling.

Is a lovely name irrespective of whether your friend 'stole' it or not.

Cormac is lovely, but let's face it, it's not THAT unusual, and it's not a unique spelling - in fact, it's the correct spelling. You should take it as a compliment that this person liked the name so much she called her DS the same name, and move on.

I think with the K is the normal surname spelling, not the first name.

Are you kidding with unusual name and unique spelling? Cormac is a very common and old Irish name, and is the correct spelling, "cormack" is entirely ridiculous and unheard of. I know about 20 Cormacs of different ages.

YeahI know tons of Cormacs, never ever met a Cormack.

But maybe it's rare where you come from so I too would be annoyed.

Cormac is the only spelling I know.
I think you need to let go of the idea he's the only one in the world.

Cormac is not that unusual a name, and it is the correct spelling - Cormack would be the 'unique' spelling! The best known Cormac I know is the writer Cormac McCarthy, who wrote All the Pretty Horses, No Country for Old Men, and The Road (the most gut-wrenchingly depressing though moving book I have ever read).

You will come across more Cormacs, I promise you, so you might as well decide to accept your friend's copying as a compliment.

Have to agree that Ariadne is a gorgeous name.

I knew an Artemis once, also a fabulous name.

I agree, Cormac is the usual spelling, certainly not 'unique'. I don't think it's worth getting upset about tbh.
