Does Octavia remind you of...

The Skoda Octavia? The name has been top of our list (probably to be shortened to Tavi) for the whole pregnancy so far, we actually both agree on it and I've kind of got used to thinking of it as her name (not that we know if it's a girl yet, we're yet to come up with any boy names we both like). My husband realised yesterday that there is a Skoda Octavia and wants to rule it out completely, but I can't let it go! I honestly don't think everyone will automatically make that connection, it's hardly Mercedes. What do you think?

It does yes. Not sure that's a reason not to use it really though, not if you really like it.

Hooray, thanks everyone! Seems like I've got more positive responses than negatives, I shall keep it on the list!

I like it, but it does now make me think of the 'Rome' storyline where she sleeps with her brother.

mejon · 06/04/2012 20:42

Pipkins for me too. Lovely name though.

abbypumpkin · 06/04/2012 20:20

I didn't automatically think of the car and don't think it's a problem. Think only car person would really notice. Love the nn Tavistock, not something I've heard before.

LetsKateWin · 06/04/2012 20:13

I thought you were going to say
Jilly Cooper when I read the title.

It's a lovely name. [busmile]

octaviarose · 06/04/2012 20:05

We have it as a middle name as she is my mothers eight Grandchild. We did consider it as a first name with the nn Tavi but my 13 year old nephew said it sounded too much like chavy so that put us off completely.
Still adore the name but don't think it would have suited DD as much as her actual name.

Pipkins

dexterthecat · 06/04/2012 17:51

Makes me think of a big green duck with an irritating squeaky voice.

To much like Orville for me!

badtasteflump · 06/04/2012 17:05

No but reminds me of the wobbly mad ostrich (also showing age)

JellyMould · 06/04/2012 17:04

I think if you rule out every Jilly Cooper character you'll be left with quite a short list! I like it, and didn't think of the car (did think of Jilly Cooper though).

iklboo · 06/04/2012 17:00

I thought Pipkins too .

baskingseals · 06/04/2012 16:51

I wanted it for dd. she is my first. was vetoed. think it is a lovely lovely name and really like Tavi as a nn.

if you both love it there's nothing stopping you.

it doesn't remind me of the car at all.

woollylamb · 06/04/2012 16:48

the car connection didn't occur to me. Roman connotation sprang to mind and octavia hill.

eurycantha · 06/04/2012 16:44

I was thinking of an ostrich, couldnt remember where from,ah Pipkins! Unusual, pretty name.

wizzler · 06/04/2012 16:39

Pipkins ... I drive a Skoda Octavia but it still makes me think of Pipkins!

AliceHurled · 06/04/2012 16:37

Makes me think of Octavia Hill. Didn't know it was a car.

littlepie · 06/04/2012 16:35

The Jilly Cooper book, but imo that's not a bad thing! I also know an Octavia (Tave for short) and she is fab.

yousankmybattleship · 06/04/2012 09:33

Doesn't make me think of a car. Lovely name.

PinkPolkaDots · 06/04/2012 09:28

To me, it depends how you pronounce it. DHs friend has a skoda octavia but he pronounces it oct aaa via whereas on reading it as a name I would pronounce it as oct ay via

sleeplessinderbyshire · 06/04/2012 09:10

it does make me think of the car TBH. I think you can only use it for an eighth child though so unless you have 7 children already you will have to discount ith

cjbk1 · 06/04/2012 09:08

A skoda

Kaloobear · 06/04/2012 09:01

It reminds me of 'Antony and Cleopatra'.

Overlovedbyfrantickitty · 06/04/2012 08:47

Also, an opera singing ostrich is quite cool actually, I can think of worse things! I think the car thing is more of a concern, and Jilly Cooper.

I know it's quite a swanky name, but I kind of think if you only know one or two people with a name then it becomes whatever they are like, so in our case wouldn't be too posh!

It doesn't remind me of the car and we used to own a Skoda!

There are lots of girls out there called Zara, presumably the Citroen Xzara didn't put them off.

It's a lovely name - go for it.
