Hit me with Welsh boys names

Really struggling to find a Welsh boy's name that we like, I've been through them all just about, and while I like some, they all have drawbacks. DS has got the one boy's name we liked and works for our wider family (pronunciation and so on).

Be grateful for suggestions other than what's in the Heini Gruffudd welsh names for children book.

I had the same dilemma. I have 2 dd's with names I chose and loved immediately. When I found out I was expecting a DS, I spent ages dithering about what to name him. I was also aware of popular boys names in DD's school.

Very popular names are -
Rhys
Gethyn
Osian
Owain
Gruff
Harri

My shortlist was -
Hedd (love, love, love it)
Sior
Llew (nn llewellyn)

DS was finally called Guto and I love it but am aware it is a marmite name outside wales. I knew 2 Guto's as a child and they were very tall, gorgeous sporty types unfortunately only managed to snog one of them

Cian... "Little black bird" Perfect for a baby with a mop of black hair :)

Just tested Hedd on my english DH... totally wasted on him!

What about Hefin or Sior?

Great thread - I've just discovered you can hear Welsh name pronunciations on the BBC website and that Hedd is "Hayeth"! I'd go for Idris or Iolo personally but as we aren't Welsh / don't live in Wales and aren't haveing any more babies that's out of the question!

Laughing at the German problem. I had the exact same issue - and my DH is a bloody Andreas too and hates it-.

It frustrated the hell out of me that DH couldn't pronounce any of my favourite Welsh names - during the more hormonal moments of pregnancy I was sure he was messing up just to annoy me.

So we picked a name with no Welsh connection at all and I'm still a bit sad. I wanted Tangwen or Bran (f/m) for the record - how hard are THEY to say, hmm?

Re tricky names (having got one), I'd say no worries if short. But don't foist a 9 letter name on him or he'll get so fed up spelling it.

If Hedd as a mn, you need a couple of syllables before it.

Talfryn Hedd
Macsen Hedd (I'd go for this if you like it, lovely name and works in England)
Cynan Hedd (though I feel I must tell you that my iPhone just tried to autocorrect that to Cuban Heel )

Haha yes! Funnily enough Heath is one of my absolute faves in English, love the sound of Gwaun too. As long as the initials don't end up as GCG

I've known only one so don't know if it was a bit of a hippy effort but I don't think so - look in the Heini book? (I don't have it anymore). Means heath?

Funnily enough soon to be DH is Andreas and he HATES it. So much so that his nickname is actually going on the wedding invites.

Every other man is called Andreas here....

I wanted Iolo, Ianto or Idris but all vetoed by (english) DH, we went with Gruffydd. Otherwise family members are

I think a few of the middle-aged men's names are due to come back - it's all Iolo and Iestyn at the moment - I say time for the return of Meurig (amazing name when you look at it afresh!), Meredydd, Mostyn, Cenydd, Glanmor!
