If I use the name Seren and return to Wales in the near future, will there be a huge number of little Seren's roaming round? What's your immediate reaction in Wales?

Can't beat Meredydd for a boy if you ask me. I also like Rhodri.

Yankeecandlequeen · 03/04/2012 13:07

I'm in Gwynedd & there is only 1 Seren in the kids school. Lovely name but not one I'd use x

I would have liked a Nye/Aneurin
Though Nye may have beena bit much with a Nia

Mopswerver · 31/03/2012 15:47

Mabon? Caleb?

Llareggub · 29/03/2012 19:56

My boys have welsh names. I have a Iestyn and a Taliesin. I would love a little Ianto too.

rhihaf · 29/03/2012 19:53

Seren is a beautiful name, who cares how many there are... just go for it! :)

Found out today we are expecting a boy (am 28+4) so looking for Welsh boys' names if anyone's got any suggestions please?
Thanks x

You know it's amazing how a name that appears to be fairly original when you choose it, can become very popular within a decade and there is no way of predicting it. I think people should just go with a name that they like and feels right within their family. Nothing else really matters eh?

Stellan · 29/03/2012 11:22

From the ONS (Baby names in England and Wales, 2010) -

Among girls born to mothers usually resident in Wales, Ruby is the most popular girls name, Olivia is number two, followed by Lily, Amelia and Seren (number 228 in England). Ava is sixth (number twelve in England), Megan is eighth (number 24 in England) and Mia is tenth (number 13 in England).

doctordwt · 28/03/2012 20:21

South Wales is heaving with Serens! It's a beautiful name though.

BeNiceOrLeave · 28/03/2012 19:56

Thank you! Yes I've seen the bat called Seren Grin DS likes that.

Will be Gwynedd area so sounds like the right amount of popular

Interesting - I am in South Wales and spend a bit of time in schools and working with young children in other capacities and I don't think I know any Serens. Lots of Ffion, Carys, Beth and Alys' though.

Petrean · 28/03/2012 19:11

Actually funny you should mention Carys... Two of my friends have just had DDs... Carys Sian and Manon Carys so Carys might be on the up too. Smile

Petrean · 28/03/2012 19:09

Okay the N/S Wales divide IMO... My DH is from Gwynedd and I know of 2. Our friends predominately live in Cardiff, Swansea and Ebbw Vale and I know 4 (2 of then my friend's DD) and know of 4 more. All under the age 5. Admittedly that doesn't make it the most common name in Wales but just sharing.

Also a Welsh children's programme called Abadas has a bat called Seren.

I still think it's a lovely name.

CupOfBrownJoy · 28/03/2012 19:06

yes. huge amounts.

SecretNutellaFix · 28/03/2012 19:05

Know a fair few little girls named Seren, Ffion and Carys.

Cheeseandbiscuits · 28/03/2012 19:04

Our DD middle name is Seren. We live in London and have met 2 others.

According to my MIL it's been the most popular name in Swansea for 2 years in a row. Fab name though.

EMS23 · 28/03/2012 19:02

My 2nd DC is due in Sept and if it's a girl she'll be Seren. We're in south Wales and I know one other.

Mopswerver · 28/03/2012 19:01

Didn't see previous post. We live in North Wales so maybe true that it is less common here.

Petrean · 28/03/2012 19:00

It's still a nice name BTW, but I think they'll be a fair few about if your daughter went to school in Wales.

Mopswerver · 28/03/2012 19:00

Well my DD is called Seren and I only know of two others, one family at our swimming pool and another who lives about 20 miles away so I don't think it is very common. It's a lovely name and we always get compliments on it. Hope that helps.

Petrean · 28/03/2012 18:59

Not in Wales anymore but DH is Welsh and we go all the time. There are lots of Serens about at the moment. Seems more common in S Wales than N Wales. We live in SE England now and I know 2 here too, both of them aged 2-3.
